Math Fluency

We are in full swing with math fluency! Knowing our math addition, and eventually subtraction, facts is a high priority in our class. If you have noticed a MATH FLUENCY section in home work, this is what I am talking about. In class we are learning strategies to help us add quickly in our heads. We have learned doubles (4+4, 7+7, etc.), and making 10’s (6+4=10, 3+7=10, etc.) In class we are compiling a stack of flash cards that are going to help us with this here at school. When we are finished making all of our flash cards, probably next week sometime, I will send students home with there very own flash cards to help them at home.

Each week we will do a one-minute timed addition fluency sheet in class. The goal is to see improvement! If their score is low right now, no worries!! We want to see growth over time. Students will be graphing their own results each week. When their score improves by 5, there will be an incentive here in class. Here is a link if you want to print some out for them at home to practice!

Here is a fabulous website that can help them at home until they bring their flashcards home. I encourage you to have them practice a few minutes each night!
