Dear Parents,

I give you back your child, the same child you confidently entrusted to my care last fall. I give them back pounds heavier, inches taller, months wiser, more responsible, and more mature than they were then.

Although they would have attained their growth in spite of me, it has been my pleasure and privilege to watch their personality unfold day by day. I give them back reluctantly, for having spent nine months together in the narrow confines of a crowded classroom, we have grown close, have become a part of each other, and we shall always retain a little of each other.

Ten years from now if we met on the street, your child and I, a light will shine to our eyes, a smile to our face, and we shall feel the bond of understanding once more, this bond we feel today.

We have lived, loved, laughed, played, studied, learned, and enriched our lives together this year. I wish it could go on indefinitely, but give them back I must. Take care of them, for they are precious.

Remember that I shall always be interested in your child and their destiny, wherever they go, whatever they do, whoever they become. Their joys and sorrows I’ll always be happy to share.

Thank you for sharing your little ones with me!

Love,
Mrs Cashin

Firework in a bottle experiment

I had a few requests for the instructions on this experiment we did yesterday.

Firework in a bottle

Equipment

  • empty water bottle
  • Warm water
  • Oil
  • Food colouring

Instructions

  • Fill the tall bottle with warm water.
  • Pour a small amount of oil into another container and add a few drops of food coloring.
  • Give it a good stir, if it doesn’t mix, add a bit of water.
  • Pour the food colouring and oil mixture into the warm water and watch the fireworks.

The Science Bit

Oil and water don’t mix. Also oil is less dense than water (meaning there is less of it in the same volume) and therefore floats on top of water in a nice layer.

The food colouring we used was water based and therefore does not mix with the oil, instead it sinks through the oil into the water below.

Since the addition of the colouring makes the food colouring heavier than the water it sinks to the bottom leaving trails (resembling fireworks) as some of the colour diffuses into the water

Science Experiments

We had a lot of fun doing science today!! We did a water tension experiment, made fireworks in a bottle,  wrote with invisible ink, and made FlUbBeR!!

The kids got to take a little sample of the flubber they made. I gave them instructions not to play with it on carpet in their house. But instead play with it outside!! It is NOT edible. Here is the recipe and instructions in case you/they want to create this at home.

Flubber Recipe
Mixture 1
1 1/2 cups of warm water
2 cups Elmer’s Glue
Food coloring

Mixture 2
3 tsp. Borax
1 Cup Warm Water

Stir mixture 1 together in a bowl
Stir mixture 2 together in a separate bowl.
Make sure both are mixed well.
Pour mixture 1 into mixture 2, stir together
You now have FLuBeR!
