Spelling City

There has been a little confusion with spelling city logins. The students login is their first and last name squished together with the number 1 after it. (johnsmith1), password is rams. Sorry about the confusion! I forgot that I had to make their logins like that.

Spelling city is a great way for your child to practice their 5 spelling words for the week. It gives them some games and practice on the computer. Use this wonderful tool! Here is the link:

Word Sorts

Daily practice of lessons is critical to your child’s academic success. Children need to be completing their homework daily. All of the spelling (word work) assignments are the same weekly, only the word lists change. The new words can be found here on the blog on Monday. Your child’s Word Sorts are specific to their learning needs.

Passing word sorts with a proficiency level of 80% is required. If your child did not pass their word sort test last week, they will continue to work on their previous sort until it is mastered. Tests will be passed back on Mondays, a sticker on their test indicates a passing grade, please continue on to the next sort.

Here are some fun ideas to practice your spelling words each night.
  • Typing spelling lists on the computer is very motivating. Use the computer to write sentences for each spelling words.  It’s a great way to teach word processing skills.
  • Invest in a set of letter stampers and let your child stamp out their spelling words.
  • Give your child a Scrabble board.  Let them take the letters out of the bag, lay them on the table face-up, and try to fit all of their spelling words on the board.
  • Collage- cut individual letter from magazines to spell out your words.
  • Get a set of magnetic letters.  (You can find them cheap at garage sales.)  Give your child letters, a spelling list, and a timer.  See if they can complete it in 1-3 minutes.
  • Create a Wordle using your spelling words (Use the 5 High frequency words for this week)
Go to wordle.net, Have your child type in all of their spelling words and print off a cool wordle!
  • Go to SpellingCity.com and practice your spelling words, practice tests and play games. The username is your first and last name squished together, The password is rams. example:johnsmith Accounts are set up!

  • Practice math on these printable math worksheets on tlsbooks.com
  • Math Magician- Practice addition drills http://resources.oswego.org/games/mathmagician/cathymath.html It is so important for students to know their math facts (adding or subtracting 5+3 quickly, flash cards). As we get into more ways to add and subtract, having this skill mastered helps them with all aspects of math. So please, help your child with their math facts!

So far we have read two different versions of the story. We also planted some grass and some “magic Beans” that Mrs. Cashin sold her cow for! We are excited to see what they turn into!

We have also done some art with a writing activity that asked them “What would you trade for magic beans?”

2013-09-10 15.51.54We are having a lot of fun with this months theme and we are looking forward to many more fun learning experiences! My 2nd graders are amazing!!

Music Mondays

We are so excited to have a wonderful parent volunteer, Mrs. Jones, in here every Monday to teach us about music!
Today we learned about sound. Some other things we are going to learn about this year are rhythm, tone, pitch, harmony and much much more!
After all this, the kids should have a good and healthy respect for music and will be very excited to learn to play their own instruments
recorders
We want to teach them how to play the recorder! In order to do this we are asking for a $4 donation. With this money each student will get their very own recorder to learn to play. They will stay here at school for the school year, then at the end, they are theirs to take home! Please take this money to the office and tell them it is for “Cashin’s Music Money”

Thank you, thank you , thank you!!!
