Math Fluency

Math Fluency – We are working so hard with adding and subtracting with regrouping! I am finding that some of the biggest struggles these kiddos are having is getting hung up on simple adding and subtracting. It will be so beneficial for them to KNOW THEIR FACTS by memory! Please encourage and help them master their addition facts!! Below you will find some printable drills, as well as a computer program to help them practice! Have fun!

Print off some addition drills and practice them nightly.Use flash cards to memorize addition math facts.
Addition Drills to 18– 100 problems per page. Includes horizontal and  vertical format
Addition Facts 7-9- 50 problems per page, Includes horizontal and vertical formats.
  • Math Magician- Practice addition drills http://resources.oswego.org/games/mathmagician/cathymath.html It is so important for students to know their math facts (adding or subtracting 5+3 quickly, flash cards). As we get into more ways to add and subtract, having this skill mastered helps them with all aspects of math. So please, help your child with their math facts!

Reading Bingo Blackout!

Yesterday I sent home POQA’s Reading Bingo Blackout cards. They passed out Kindergarten’s cards to us by mistake! I will send home the new ones today. Your card should say “2nd (red level)” at the top left hand corner. These cards are to be filled out during the month, then brought to the office for a reward at the beginning of each month! This is an optional program, 20 minutes of reading each night is still required for our class!

Homework Help!

This week in math we are learning to subtract with regrouping. I have added a video that will help your students with their homework this week. This is a hard concept for some of them, so the more practice they get with it, the better! Make up some additional problems for them throughout the week so they can master this concept!!

Word Sorts

Daily practice of lessons is critical to your child’s academic success. Children need to be completing their homework daily. All of the spelling (word work) assignments are the same weekly, only the word lists change. The new words can be found here on the blog on Monday. Your child’s Word Sorts are specific to their learning needs.

Passing word sorts with a proficiency level of 80% is required. If your child did not pass their word sort test last week, they will continue to work on their previous sort until it is mastered. Tests will be passed back on Mondays, a sticker on their test indicates a passing grade, please continue on to the next sort.

Spelling-

Every Monday I will post a list of 5 spelling words that your child will need to be able to read/use in a sentence/SPELL! Students will be tested on Friday!

SPELLING LIST:

here, short, between, cut, dome

Here are some fun ideas to practice your spelling words each night.
  • Typing spelling lists on the computer is very motivating. Use the computer to write sentences for each spelling words.  It’s a great way to teach word processing skills.
  • Invest in a set of letter stampers and let your child stamp out their spelling words.
  • Give your child a Scrabble board.  Let them take the letters out of the bag, lay them on the table face-up, and try to fit all of their spelling words on the board.
  • Collage- cut individual letter from magazines to spell out your words.
  • Get a set of magnetic letters.  (You can find them cheap at garage sales.)  Give your child letters, a spelling list, and a timer.  See if they can complete it in 1-3 minutes.
  • Create a Wordle using your spelling words (Use the 5 High frequency words for this week)
Go to wordle.net, Have your child type in all of their spelling words and print off a cool wordle!
  • Go to SpellingCity.com and practice your spelling words, practice tests and play games. The username is your first and last name squished together with the #1 after it, The password is rams. example:johnsmith1 Accounts are set up!

Headphones!

A lot of the students have non-working headphones or they are lost. It is extremely important for them to have a working pair of headphones here at school. We use the computers at least 3 times a day, and headphones are necessary. Ask your child how their headphones are doing, and if they tell you bad news, please help them fix or acquire a new pair. Thank you for your help in this matter!

A few Notes for the Week

Parents,  I just wanted to remind you that short day (1:00) is THURSDAY NOT FRIDAY because of the Halloween  activities.
Parents and other family members are encouraged to attend the “parade”, where students can show their costumes to other grades. Parents can watch from the Q2 Gym.

Quest no longer sends printed grades! Please check SIS and contact me if you have any questions. The end of the term was last Friday. Grades have been locked and posted.

There are MANY exciting things happening at Quest! Click on the link below to view our school’s bog!
