Kindergarten homework this year will be 20 minutes of reading each night. Reading 20 minutes a night is so important for your student. The reading can include: flashcard practice, baggie book, somebody reading to the student, shared reading between them and a partner, audio listening to a book, etc.
The sight words we are working this year are:
Term 1
I can the we see a like to and go
Term 2
you do my are he with is little she was
Term 3
for have of they said want here me this what
Term 4
help too has play look where good who come does
Reading can be a lot of work. Mastering basic sight words can help students succeed. Consider the following statistics about sight words:
- 12 sight words make up about 25% of those we read and write.
- 100 sight words make up about 50% of those we read and write.
- About 300 sight words make up about 75% of those we read and write.
Important note: it is much better for a child to have solid knowledge of 50 words than to kind of know 300 words. It is not enough for children to kind of know their sight words. They need to be able to recognize them instantly and accurately in order to build reading fluency and comprehension of written material they will read in books.
