Its all in the DETAILS…Characters, Setting, Event and Math

Related imageParents,
I wanted to let you know of some things we have been mastering for Language Arts. Currently, we are working on  mastering key details, and identifying the characters, setting, and events in a story. Many of your students are struggling with these and I would appreciate it if you could review them with your students. Whether it is asking them questions, or having them tell you what the story is about that you are reading at home. An idea would be to have students draw pictures of the characters and where the story takes place (setting) after you read a story. You can also read a story and have them color pictures of 4 key details of something that happened in the story. Anything you can do to help them better understand these concepts is appreciated! Thank you!

Also, for math we have been mastering, “I can use number partners to make 6 and 7.” Many students are struggling with this concept because they get confused on where the numbers can go. Many of them can do it if I’m sitting next to them, but lots struggled on the test today. If you could please review with them, I would appreciate it. Here is an example of what we worked on. Feel free to do a couple with your student with different numbers that make 6 and 7. On their test they had to find one of the smaller box numbers (so in this case, they had to find the number 5 because 1+5=6) Then, they had to go through and put the numbers 1 and 5 where they go in the number sentence. 6=1+5 and if we switch the numbers they can do 6=5+1. Hopefully this makes sense and you are able to do some examples at home. If your student can do the numbers for 6 and 7. Have them work on 8 and 9. The next couple lessons are building on each other and we continue to do bigger numbers.

Homework for October 22nd-26th

1- Math Homework:
  • A letter titled “Dear Family” will be sent home in your child’s green take-home-folder tomorrow (Monday).  Please have your student review it as the students still need some extra work on it.  It provides an activity to do together.  Please read the letter and invite your child to share what they know about the concept by doing the activity together. If you need a replacement, here is the letter below: Screen Shot 2018-10-20 at 11.07.30 PMScreen Shot 2018-10-20 at 11.07.49 PM
    • ***Parents, PLEASE have your student their name as well as PLEASE WRITE YOUR SIGNATURE on the math homework, indicating you did this activity with your child**
*These are due on Friday.  When students return this letter with their name and a parent signature (indicating a parent read it and did the activity with their child), the student will earn “Star Dust.æ
2. Daily Reading Fluency (available in the Green Homework folders). I am sending home a “Fast and Fluent” page for your student to practice reading this week. There are 10 words and 10 sentences that your student needs to read daily. Have your student do 3- 1 minute timings each day on the words and sentences then, record how many words they read CORRECTLY in each one minute timing, NOT how long it took them to read it 3 times. Let me know if you have any questions.  The goal is to get more words read correctly each day with each timing. The time they spend reading can count toward their 20minutes.

These sentences contain words that focus on the phonics concept/sounds we will be working on that week. They also help students with what correct sentence structure should look like. This week it’s words that focus on the short /e/ sound as in leg, men and head. There are also a couple High Frequency words we will be reading and talking about.

WE REACHED OUR FIRST GOAL and WE CAN DO SO MUCH MORE!!!

http://qacblogs.org/ronda.hills/files/2018/10/karaoke.jpgAs a school, we are well on our way to surpassing our goal of 10,000 cans/items for the canned food drive. Because we have already passed the 5,000 can mark, students earned karaoke during their lunch on Monday and Tuesday of next week. Please indicate below if your student is interested in participating. Interested students will be randomly selected to sing during their lunch time. Hopefully, everyone who wants to participate will have the chance to sing on at least one of those days. Thanks again for your kindness and generosity.

Please click here to indicate if your child would like to sing: Karaoke Lunch

OOPS Moon Journal Paper

Image result for free moon clip artI will be sending home their moon journal (paper) this Friday. I’ll put it in your student’s homework  green homework folder. PLEASE START RECORDING THIS FRIDAY. This 3 week project will give your student the opportunity to observe and record the phases of the moon. If there is a day(s) that they can’t see the moon, because it too cloudy, you can look at it via a link on our blog (bottom right side under the Math/Science links). It’s says 2016 but it’s not and when you go to the web page you can key in 2018. It will have a picture of what it looks now where you are living… It also has a ton of other interesting facts you can discuss with your student. FYI, the next full moon is supposed to be on October 24th with the new moon on November 7th.
If you have any questions about the project let me know. This is an important part of the 1st grade science curriculum so please help and support your child with this assignment.

*** When I went to print off the moon journal page this morning there was a small technical issue..LOL It didn’t/ wouldn’t print…SO with that in mind I am adding the Journal page below so you can print it from home. Please let me know if you have any problems or questions. *** When you print it off ,  you need to increase the image size to “Fit the Page” otherwise it will be VERY SMALL!!! HAHAHAHA
