Homework for September 17th-21st

Homework this week is due on Friday, September 21st:

1- Math Homework:  ***Parents, please WRITE YOUR SIGNATURE on the math homework, indicating you did this activity with your child for credit*** Please check out the “Optional” extra math practice for more fun games and activities for your kiddo.

  • A letter titled “Dear Family” will be sent home in your child’s green take-home-folder on Monday.  It provides an activity to do together.  Please read the letter and invite your child to share what they know about the concept by doing the activity together.
*These are due on Friday.  When students return this letter with their name and a parent signature (indicating a parent read it and did the activity with their child), the student will be given star dust.

  • Optional: for extra math practice, play any of these Math Games and Activities
  • I am also going to send home a couple papers home that have a math bingo game that you can do as a family. It is NOT homework and doesn’t need to be returned. We will also be learning how to play this game in class later this week.
2- Daily Reading Fluency (available in the Green Homework folders). I am sending home a “Fast and Fluent” page for your student to practice reading this week. There are 10 words and 10 sentences that your student needs to read daily. Have your student do 3- 1 minute timings each day just on the sentences, then record how many words they read in each one minute timing, NOT how long it took them to read it 3 times. Let me know if you have any questions. The time they spend reading can count toward their 20minutes.  The goal is to get more words read correctly each day with each timing.

These sentences contain words that focus on the phonics concept/sounds we will be working on that week. They also help students with what correct sentence structure should look like. This week it’s words with the short /i/ vowel sound. There are also a couple High Frequency words we will be reading and talking about on the list.

***Please review the High Frequency words from Unit 1 Week 1 and Week 2 in the ringed high frequency cards you got at back to school night. These are words that your student will be reading frequently from now until they are 102…LOL

3- Reading 20 minutes per day.  BIG OOPS!!! Please DO record your students reading minutes each day/week on their reading calendars located in their Green Homework folder.  Reading comprehension strategyHelp your child identify key details (important parts in the story) in the order they occurred.

Our transportation costs to and from the Hogle Zoo last year was around $1200. Our fee for the Hill AFB Museum was around $700. Again, we really are so grateful and appreciative of anything that you can donate for our field trips.  Thank you for your generosity!

2- Wear a  RED  QUEST UNIFORM SHIRTsunscreen and good walking shoes! Please dress for the weather.

3- Bring a cold COMPLETELY DISPOSABLE sack lunch, from home, in a COMPLETELY DISPOSABLE BAG LABELED WITH YOUR CHILD’S NAME. Again, everything must be completely disposable. WE will not have access to a microwave.

4- Be on time. Arrive at school by 8:25 am even if you are driving your car, as you need to get a list of the students in your group and their lunches (See Parent Information Below). Bus departs at 8:45am.  We will leave the zoo around 1:00-1:15pm, returning to Quest around 2:00 or 2:30pm.

5- Parent chaperones: Please bring a backpack or bag in which you will carry your groups lunches, and a lunch for yourself.  Please arrive and meet in our room at 8:25am to go over last minute instructions and get a copy of the Zoo Groups.  If you are bringing siblings, it is necessary for you to drive your own vehicle.  Please be prepared to pay for yourself and any extra children you bring.  For those driving, plan on meeting us at the zoo no later than 9:30 am.  The zoo address is 2600 E. Sunnyside Avenue, Salt Lake, UT, 84108.
  • Parent Volunteers: We are ALWAYS looking for more volunteers so don’t be shy. You may join your child’s group to help with the group management.  If your cell phone number is not correct in ASPIRE, please email/class DOJO to update it on the field trip form in case we need to reach you and your group.
**I know we will have 2-4 spaces for chaperones to ride the bus. I like to fill these on a needs basis first… WE think there will be room for a couple more but as of today I am still waiting to hear for sure.

So this year the Zoo is being super picky about the ratio (parent/kids) for groups, and have stated that we are only allowed 5 adults/5 kids including teachers for free….UGH…. I have a zoo pass, as does another parent so we lucked out and will be able to have 6 extra for a total of 11 free  WHEW. Our Pass should also cover those couple people bringing their kids. As a safety feature, we must have at least 2 adults with each group . With that in mind, I currently have 4 groups with 6 students per group and 2+ chaperones assigned to each group which should be manageable.

Below is a current list of Chaperones and the mode of transportation they are planning on using: If you would like to volunteer or I missed your name somehow (SORRY) PLEASE let me know ASAP, AS many hands make light work. I am hoping to be able to put the final groups together Sunday September 16th.

Fun with STEM and Science

Image result for STEM and SCience free Clip artOur Stem Challenge this month is to construct either a square, circle, or triangle out of regular copy paper, then see which shape can hold the most books when they are placed on top of that shape. If you want to help your child give them some paper and some tape at home, then let them practice folding and taping the paper into each shape. It can be tricky LOL.

This year we will be doing rotations for science, technology, and social studies on Mondays. Mrs. Teichert and I will be teaching science, Mrs. Nelson and Mrs. Knight will be teaching tech and Mrs. Geiseke will be teaching social studies. Each rotation will last approximately 6 weeks. Our class will start in …Our class LOL…For the next 6 weeks we will be learning about, and discussing the following:

Standard 2 Earth and Space. Students will gain understanding of Earth and Space Science through the study of earth materials, celestial movement ….
Objective 2 Observe and describe the changes and appearance of the sun and the moon during the day (and night lol).
                        a. Observe the sun at different times of the day and report your observations to peers.
                        b. Observe and chart the moon when it is visible during the day (or night)

Standard 4 Life Science. Students will gain an understanding of the Life Science through the study of changes in organisms over time and the nature of living things…
Objective 1 Communicate observations about the similarities and differences between offspring and between
                        populations.
                       a. Communicate observations about plants and animals, including humans and how they resemble their
                           parents.
                       b. Analyze the individual similarities and differences withing and across larger groups.
Objective 2 Living things change and depend upon upon their environment to satisfy their basic needs.
                       a. Make observations about living things and their environment using the five senses.
                       b. Identify how natural earth materials (e.g. food, water, air light and space) help to sustain plant and
                           animal life.
                       c. Describe and model life cycles of living things.

***Please have your student bring in a family photo to share with the class while we discuss how they may resemble you as parents.  The kids have so much fun talking about and sharing pictures of their families. We will also talk about the fact that not all families live with, or have pictures of there parents, (e.g. adoptions, fosters etc) but that they do have people who love, care for and about them.
