Money Lessons

coinsOur math lesson this week is about money.  1st graders need to be able to identify pennies, nickels, dimes & quarters, and know their comparative values.  It would be very helpful if they are able to look closely at a few of these real coins and use them to count change.  If you are able, please have some handy for them to work with.  If you don’t have real ones, play money will do also!  Thank you!

Optional:  Print out Big Dipper Star Pictures and Sky Sheet to do the activity yourself at home (recommended). You will also need a paper cup, a push pin, tape, scissors and two flashlights.  Otherwise, you can watch the video to see how it works.  Check out the extension activity for more fun!

Your can trace your shadow, just like Jada did.

Step 1: Have someone trace your shadow in chalk—first in the morning, then in the afternoon. Use different colors for different times of day. Tip: trace around their shoes first.

Step 2: Near each shadow, draw an arrow to where the sun is in the sky at that time of day.

Step 3: At the end of the day…Why you think your morning and afternoon shadows pointed in different directions?
