Make Up Work if Absent

Here are some ideas to work on if your child is absent:

1-Read from recent decodables we send home each week.

2-If you have a set of alphabet flashcards (or print one from here: http://qacblogs.org/lisa.teichert/2021/11/18/printable-flashcards/) practice speed in naming the letters and also the sounds (55 in a minute).  Picking up the speed will give them a boost and an advantage in reading!

3-Practice reading and memorizing the new sight words we’re learning this week: “he”, “with”.

4-Work on iReady (available during school hours). Go to clever.com and log in using the QR code on the front of their take home folder. Here’s the schedule we follow at school:

Mondays and Wednesdays: Math for 10 min.+

Tuesdays and Thursdays: Reading for 10 min.+

***There is an assigned lesson in math this week, so have them click the “blue box” before doing the “green box” in math.

The link is always available on the right sidebar of our blog as well [“Clever (iReady)”].

5-Work on this week’s MATH and READING worksheet packets. Email me if you can pick them up at the front office and we’ll run them down there for you: lteichert@questac.org

Thanks for helping your child stay caught up when absent!

Parent Teacher Conferences

Parent Teacher Conferences will be held on Wednesday, February 2 and Thursday, February 3.  We will be offering an in person option as well as a Zoom option. I would prefer to meet in person if possible, but if you feel more comfortable or it does not work with your schedule we will be happy to accommodate with a Zoom conference. There are enough appointments available if a child needs more time slots to accommodate parent/guardian situations. Please sign up by clicking the following link: Conference Sign Up Form

Please note: Wednesday will be an early out day (10:30), there will be NO SCHOOL for half day Kindergarten only on Thursday and no school on Friday (November 5).

Heads Up

Looking ahead, there will be NO SCHOOL for half day Kindergarten ONLY on Thursday, Feb. 3rd. Parent Teacher Conferences for our class will be held Wed., Feb. 2nd after school/evening and Thursday morning (Feb. 3rd). Sign ups will be available soon.

(School Wide Reminder: Wednesday, Feb. 2nd is a short day and there is no school on Friday, Feb. 4th)

Students in our class are welcome to wear comfy pajamas to class on Wednesday, December 15! (Keep in mind it will be a cold day and we will most likely go out for recess. PJ’s are completely optional; students can wear their school uniform instead).

Also, Friday is a free dress down day (ugly sweater if desired) for everyone. Our class winter party will go from 9:30-10:30 that day and parents are always welcome to come! If you haven’t already, please fill out the treat permission form here:  Winter Party Permission

Thank you!

This Week’s Overview

Here’s a quick overview of new things we learned this week:

Comprehension strategy: “Ask and Answer Questions” . We read different stories to go along with our theme “Who are your neighbors?”

New High Frequency Word: “do”

Phonics:blend and isolate sounds in CVC words. New sound/spelling: /d/ Dd

Sound Wall: /ar/ as in star, /k/ and /s/ as in box.

Vocabulary: cultures, appreciate, prefer, tradition, proud

Math: Lesson 17 “Add Within 5”

Science: This week, we investigated how to bring light and warmth to a cold mountain town that doesn’t see the sun throughout winter. (This lesson is actually based on the story of a real town in Norway!) Using the Engineering Design Process, students experimented with different materials and discovered that sunlight can be redirected using reflective materials. You can encourage them to notice the heating effects of the sun all around them!

Upcoming Events:

  • December 16: Discovery Gateway in-class “field trip”
  • December 17, 9:30-10:30- Class Winter Party
  • December 18-January 2: Winter Break- No School

Letter & Number Handwriting

We are continuing to work on the SPEED (fluency) of naming our letters and sounds and we’re also starting to focus on writing letters AND numbers. Please look for recent testing results coming home in your child’s take home folder today along with some fun ideas to practice handwriting at home. (If your child has mastered writing all their letters and numbers, you could encourage them to practice improving handwriting including reversals and spacing).
