Standard 4.MD.1 – Relative sizes of measurements

Standard 4.MD.1

Know relative sizes of measurement units within one system of units including km, m, cm; kg, g; lb., oz.; l, ml; hr., min, sec. Within a single system of measurement, express measurements in a larger unit in terms of a smaller unit. Record measurement equivalents in a two-column table. For example, know that 1 ft. is 12 times as long as 1 in. Express the length of a 4 ft. snake as 48 in. Generate a conversion table for feet and inches listing the n
umber pairs (1, 12), (2, 24), (3, 36)…

Explanation: Below are many videos helpful in remembering measurements. Students do not need to know how to convert between systems. (For example, they do not need to learn to convert inches to centimeters.) However, the do need to remember how to convert within the metric system (like grams to kilograms), and convert time (how many seconds are in a minute, minutes in hours, etc.)

Students will also learn how many inches are in a foot, feet in a yard, yard in a mile, and so on. There is a lot to remember, so look at the videos below for help.
