Standard 4.OA.3 – Multi-Step Word Problems

Standard 4.OA.3

Solve multi-step word problems posed with whole numbers and having whole-number answers using the four operations, including problems in which remainders must be interpreted.

1. Represent these problems using equations with a letter standing for the unknown quantity.
2. Assess the reasonableness of answers using mental computation and estimation strategies, including rounding.

Explanation: In this standard we ask students to solve multi-step word problems like:

A dog owner bought 7 bags of dog food for $140, with each bag containing 1,320 cups. Knowing she will divvy up the cups among her 4 dogs, with each dog getting the same number of cups, how many cups will each dog get?

The first thing the student must do is multiply 1320 X 7 = 9240.
The second step would be to divide 9240 / 4 = 2310.

We also show the students that some information on the question might not be needed, such as the cost of the dog food.
