Announcements

Before I forget, Tonight, Monday January 25th, is a FREE movie night at Cinepoint 6, sponsored by POQA. They will be showing the Peanuts Movie at 6:30 sharp, so arrive early, purchase your treats and settle in for a really fun show.  With the movie in mind, I’ve decided to NOT require homework tonight.

If your child has not returned their permission slip for the field trip, please do that as soon as possible so we have a count for the Children’s Theatre.

Thursday is parent teacher night.  If you would like to meet with me please send me an e-mail.  I have 3:15, 3:30, 3:45 and 4:15 available

Friday is a Dollar Dress Down, Short Day.  Please remember to have your child picked up at 1:00.

We are still looking for a few parents to help with our basket for the POQA sponsered Gala in March.  3rd grade is excited to announce that we will be doing a Sports Themed Basket (or Baskets if needed) with  items from the 4 local Universities.  and the Jazz.  We will also be collecting items for these baskets so start looking and thinking about things that you might possibly donate towards the best basket for the Gala!

Homework Week of January 25

Remember to READ at least 5 times a week for 20 minutes!
It is imperative that your child is participating in reading practice at home. Studies have shown that the more words a child read, the better their achievement is in all other areas.  We will be starting book talks where the students talk about what they read the night before.  Not only are they given homework points for reading, but they will be given participation points for discussing what they’ve read the night before. Thanks!

Homework Week of Jan. 19

I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend! I can’t believe we are heading into the third quarter. It’s going too fast for sure! We are starting area in composite shapes this week in math and will finish our Owl Moon unit in reading and writing.

Field Trip Information
Your student should have brought home a field trip permission slip.  We are very excited to be going to the Utah Children’s Theatre and then to the State Capitol for lunch and a quick tour.  We are asking for a $6.00 donation to cover the cost of entrance and partial help with the bus.  No child will be left behind due to inability to pay the donation.  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

Gala Basket
POQA will be sponsoring a Gala in March where each grade will create a basket for a basket auction.  We are looking for a few parents  (Hopefully one from each classroom) to head up this project.  We will collect items for the basket from our students  and then turn all items over to our volunteer parents to organize and package into a basket for the Gala.  Please contact me if you would like to be a part of this project.  We really appreciate your willing to help us make this a huge success.

Lunch/Recess/P.E. Notes
Just a reminder, the microwaves in the lunchroom should be used to warm up foods.  We are seeing an increasing number of frozen meals that take 4 to 8 minutes to cook.  This is very hard when there are 15 students waiting at one microwave to warm up their lunch.  If you need to send a microwave meal, please cook it at home and put it in a container that your child can warm it up in the microwave at lunch time to ensure that everyone has time to eat.

Please note, the students will be going outside for Recess/PE every day unless it is extremely cold.  Please have them dress for the weather. There is plenty of time for them to put their winter boots, pants, etc. before they go out and to take them off before the eat lunch.  It is very uncomfortable to be in snow boots all day, so please send an extra pair of shoes for them to change into.

Multiplication Madness
We will be having our Multiplication Madness Activity in conjunction with our Valentine’s Party.  I will be sending home notes daily on which factor your student is currently working on.  It is so important that the facts be memorized not only for now, but for their math in 4th grade  and in life.  We will be sending home requests for donations for this activity in February.

Field Trip Information

We are currently planning a fun and adventurous field trip that will take place Thursday, February 4th.  We have the opportunity to visit the Children’s Theatre in Salt Lake for the production “Heroes of World War II”.  The cost of this production is $6.00 per student and we are asking each student pay their $6.00 to the front office (for admission and to help with price of bus), and then give their receipt to their teacher.
This field trip is our one and only bus field trip for the year.  We will be boarding the buses immediately after roll call and will need every student at school ON TIME.   We will not be able to wait for late students.   Volunteer parents will need to drive themselves or carpool with other volunteer parents. We will first go to the Children’s Theatre and then have lunch on the State Capitol grounds.  We will also take a tour of the State Capitol after lunch.  We will return to Quest Academy at 2:00.  Pick up will be at normal time.
School lunch will not be available this day; so all children will need to bring a backpack with their lunch (and water bottle) inside.  Their backpacks will also serve as the storage place for their coats throughout the day. There is no need to bring any money. Please make sure your child is dressed for the weather the day of the field trip.
If you would like to chaperone on this trip, you are more than welcome to join us. The cost of each adult is $5.00, and will need to be paid as we enter the theater. We are sharing the theatre with another school and need to let them know the exact number of parents we will have with us. If we do not have a written commitment from you, by January 29th, you will not be able to attend with us.  Please indicate on the form below if you would like to go with us.  Due to the nature of this trip and the need of adult supervision,  PLEASE  make other arrangements for ALL other brothers and sisters.
Please return the bottom portion of  this note–Children’s Theatre and pay your $6.00 no later than Friday, January 29th; we will gladly take them before that.

Class News

I’m so excited to announce our first field trip of the year!  On February 4th, we will be going  to The Children’s Theatre in Salt Lake to see the production Heroes of World War II.  We are still working out some of the details and will post these as soon as we have them all worked out.

Also, please remember that this Friday there is no school so we will be having our word sort test on Thursday.

January 11-14 Homework

We made it through our first full week back! We worked hard last week and accomplished a lot. There are new WTW spelling groups starting this week. Let me know if you have any questions about the new groups.

We finished learning all the tips and tricks for multiplication facts 0-11’s. 12’s is optional for third grade but it doesn’t hurt to memorize them as well so we will go over them this week. The students have until February 12 to pass off each fact for our multiplication party. Please have them continue to practice their facts at home. Ask your student where they are at in their timed quizzes and help them master that fact so they can move forward and master the next one.

We are starting area this week which will help the students practice their multiplication facts.

**I am aware that your child may have already done some of these sorts this year, but  they need to be placed into the correct sort group that they tested into.  This will be a good review for the students that may not have tested very well on those patterns.**

Math –
Play Prodigy 3 times this week for at least 15 minutes. Practice multiplication facts.

Diversity Quilt

Mrs. Anderson has been working very hard to teach and implement lessons to help our school reach its STEM goal. The week before Christmas break, she sent home a letter regarding the diversity quilt. Please send your child’s piece of the quilt back tomorrow. I will be giving a Social Studies grade for those that bring it back because it ties directly into our third grade curriculum.
Thanks to all of you wonderful parents for the support you give our class and school!
I have the BEST students and parents.

Happy New Year!

I hope you all had a wonderful break and holiday. I want to wish you all a Happy New Year! I missed your sweet kids and am excited to get back! This week will be very busy as we are almost half way through the school year. We will be working on text dependent writing from non-fiction text, starting our Mouse and the Motorcycle unit, and learning about Fables. We also will be working HARD to get our multiplication facts down. We will be finishing up 6’s, 7’s, and 8’s this week so please have your child work on them at home as well. I will be teaching them some games that they can do at home to help with this.
Thank You!

HOMEWORK Jan. 4 – 8

There will be NO Words Sorts this week since I am still assessing each student.
Math: Please work on Prodigy Monday-Thursday for at least 15 minutes each night. I have assigned multiplication practice to help get those facts down.
