SEP’s Next Week!

We will be having SEP meetings next Thursday, December 15th from 3:30-4:30.  Please let me know if you’d like to meet with me about your child.  I’d like to meet with every parent, so if we haven’t met yet, please make an appointment if the time works for you.  Thanks!

Please Read!! Grinch Party and Christmas Party Info!!!

Next Friday morning on December 16th, the third grade will be having a Grinch Party.  We will be watching the movie, How The Grinch Stole Christmas as a grade.  We will be serving “Grinch Popcorn” (sugared popcorn colored green) “Grinch Pills” (green Sixlets) during the party.  Please let us know if you have a problem with your child eating either of these things.  Since this day is a Dollar Dress Down day, we thought it would be fun for the students to dress up like the Grinch or a Who from the story/movie.  Any child that would like to do that sure can.  It will add to the fun for sure!

After the Grinch Party, our class will be doing a White Elephant gift exchange party.  Please send your child with a wrapped present on or before the 16th.  This can be something from around your house, a Dollar Store purchase, a toy you have lying around, something funny to make us laugh (Those are my favorite.), etc.  Please DO NOT go out and spend a bunch of money on this gift.  That will not be necessary.  Let me know if you need me to have a gift ready for your child.  Thanks so much for all you do!

Field Trip Details

For tomorrow, we will be getting on the bus right at 8:30 so please DO NOT be late! Also, parents can meet us at the theatre. Have your child wear their uniform with their tie dye shirt OVER IT (Dr. Dave said your child must have a collar under the tie dye shirt). Dress Warm!! The address is 3605 S. State St. South Salt Lake, UT 84115. The theatre won’t allow the students to go in until all of the adults are paid for so feel free to go ahead of the bus and pay before we get there so speed up the process. Also, we will be heading to the capitol right after the play for lunch a quick self-guided tour. Thanks in advance for all of your help!

Field Trip Week!!

Remember the field trip is this Tuesday.  Please have your child dress for the weather, keeping in mind that their backpack is their coatroom, lunch carrier and water bottle holder.  The Children’s Theatre of Utah will be performing Aesop’s Fables, which will be perfect as these are a major part of our reading curriculum and will be a great introduction. We will then eat and have the opportunity to explore the State Capitol after we eat lunch.  It should be a really fun day.

READING
Read 20 minutes each night and turn in  Sort and Reading Log or the electronically http://qacblogs.org/nichol.lloyd/homework/reading/
Please continue to read every night for at least 20 minutes.  We will be evaluating each student individually after Christmas to ensure that learning is happening and reading levels are raising.  It’s OK for your child to spend some of their reading time silently, but they still need to do some reading out loud so you can talk about the story itself, how the author did things to make the story more interesting, how they create a setting and what words they chose to use and why.

SPELLING
Our class will be working on wh, ch, and sh words this week. Please print off this sort:  Purple24 Sort and record your sorts on the Sort and Reading Log or electronically http://qacblogs.org/nichol.lloyd/homework/reading/

Monday- Category Sort (sort by pattern)
Tuesday-Speed Sort (See how fast you can sort)
Wednesday-No Peeking Sort (Have an adult tell you the word and write it down without looking at the word)
Thursday- Writing Sort (Write each word in the correct category)

Multiplication Madness

Multiplication Madness Pic
We are hitting multiplication really hard in math right now.  We started this past week with Multiplication Madness! Please start drilling  the multiplication facts with them. The students are expected to drill their math facts at home also. The students have to pass off their 0′s to 10′s for a required grade. Every student will be given 10 problems to pass off in one minute. Multiplication facts are a huge part of the third grade math core curriculum. The students will have to spend time at home working on these facts in order to pass them off in the time table we have set. The students will have the opportunity to pass off their multiplication facts as many times as they can before the celebration. Our Multiplication Madness Banana Split Celebration will take place on Tuesday,February 14th from 2:00-3:00.

**Students will need to spend time studying multiplication facts so they are prepared. Weekends are a great time to work on multiplication facts (since there is no homework).**

Each part of the Banana Split is one of the multiplication facts that needs to be passed off. You will get that part of the Banana Split ONLY if you pass off that actual fact.

2′s – Bowl

Book Orders!!

I sent book order forms home with the students today. If you would like to order, please do so online at  https://clubs2.scholastic.com before next Wednesday, December 7.  Our classroom code is NKFMG. I love Scholastic because the books are reasonably priced and they are third grade level reading books. If you would like them for a gift, please let me know and I will just call you when your order arrives instead of sending it home with your child.

Thanks!!
