Welcome back! Hope you had a marvelous Thanksgiving Break! We have a busy and fun 3 weeks ahead!
ELA: We will learn to ask and answer questions from expository texts to determine their text structure and explain how text structure contributes to the overall meaning of the text. Additionally, we will practice phonics with an emphasis on vowel team syllables, enhancing our reading and pronunciation skills.
Math: In mathematics, we will begin working with fractions. We will learn that fractions are the division of a numerator by the denominator so we can use measurements in real-world situations.
Science: We begin our second science standard, properties of matter, with a field trip Monday morning. This standard will unpack properties, changes, and conservation. We will work with this standard until February.
Important Dates:
Dec 2nd – Field Trip
Dec 2nd – Choir Rehearsal & West Haven Tree Lighting (6PM)
Dec 2nd to 6th – Paper Pie Book Fair (2-4PM)
Dec 4th – Choir Ogden Amphitheater (6PM)
Dec 5th – Choir Rehearsal
Dec 7th – Grinch Breakfast
Dec 10th – Choir Rehearsal
Dec 12th – Choir Rehearsal
Dear Families,
We are excited to announce our first out-of-school field trip to the orthodontic office of Dr. Pobanz Monday December 2nd! This adventure will kick off our new science unit on changes in matter, emphasizing the fascinating connections between science and how it applies to everyday life.
During the visit, students can look forward to engaging in activities at various stations:
We would love to have a few parent volunteers join us. If you are interested, please indicate on the permission slip to enter a lottery. We will notify you this week if you are selected. (Please no siblings or additional guests.)
Thank you for your continued support!
Best regards,
Ms. Beal
It’s our last week of school before Thanksgiving Break! The time has flown by. Here is an overview of what your student will be learning this week. Watch for communication shortly about our first out of school field trip coming up December 2nd.
ELA:
We will explore the theme of a text, specifically focusing on realistic fiction. This will allow students to connect with characters and situations that reflect real life. Additionally, we will practice phonics with an emphasis on open syllables, enhancing our reading and pronunciation skills.
Math:
In mathematics, we will dive into dividing decimals up to the hundredths place. This foundational skill is crucial for understanding more complex mathematical concepts and applying them in real-world scenarios.
Science:
Our science curriculum will include a review of the RISE Benchmark, where we will recap important concepts related to earth systems. This review will help reinforce our knowledge and prepare students for future explorations in the natural world.
We are excited about the engaging activities and discussions that will unfold next week. Encourage your student to ask questions and share what they are most eager to learn!

Hello Fifth Grade Families,
This week in class we are learning how to multiply decimals so we can work with money and measurements. Please challenge your students to show you what they are learning with decimal operations at home! Tutoring will be held by invitation only for those students who could use a little extra practice and direction.
In ELA, we will continue determining the theme of a text, this time within realistic fiction, again drawing on specific details and summarizing the text. In science, we will complete our study of the characteristics and interactions of Earth’s Systems with RISE benchmark testing and a special in-school field trip.
Please make sure your child is reading at home every day! 20 minutes is the goal!
Thank you for your support,
Ms. Beal

Hello, 5th grade families!
There will be NO tutoring this week.
English Language Arts (ELA)
Next week in ELA, we will explore the wonderful world of poems. Students will deepen their understanding of poetic structure and literary elements by analyzing the plot, setting, and themes of these poems. Additionally, we will focus on closed syllables to strengthen our skills.
Mathematics
In math, we are expanding our knowledge by adding AND subtracting decimals. Students will explore the relationship between decimals and how to add and subtract them correctly.
Science
Our science exploration is focused on Earth’s intricate systems. We will delve into the geosphere (the solid Earth), the biosphere (the living world), the cryosphere (the frozen parts of the planet), the hydrosphere (the water cycle), and the atmosphere (the gaseous envelope surrounding the Earth). By understanding how these systems interact, students will gain a deeper appreciation for the complex and dynamic nature of our home planet.
Thanks!
Ms. Beal
Important Dates:
Nov 5th – Choir Practice
Nov 7th – Choir Practice
Nov 12th – Choir Practice
Nov 14th – Lockdown Drill and Choir Practice
Halloween & Red Ribbon Week
English Language Arts (ELA)
Next week in ELA, we will explore the wonderful world of folktales. By analyzing the plot, setting, and themes of these traditional stories, students will deepen their understanding of narrative structure and literary elements. Additionally, we will focus on contractions to strengthen our skills. Our work on our spooky Halloween stories will also continue as students refine their creative writing abilities.
Mathematics
In math, we are expanding our number sense by working on comparing decimals and rouding them to the thousandths. Students will explore the relationship between decimals and place value, learning to fluently round decimals. We will also revisit the concept of powers of ten, building on our previous lessons to solidify our understanding of this important mathematical principle.
