October 2nd – 6th

October 2, 2023

5th-grade families,

It’s hard to believe we are into October already and Fall break is next week (October 11th-13th)! Please make sure to send your child prepared for those colder mornings. We are also having Parent-teacher conferences on October, 25 & 26th. I will be sending sign-up sheets this week, so please grab a slot that works best for you. I’m thrilled to be able to spend that time talking with you about your amazing student.

I am working on plans for our classroom Halloween Party, and hope to have the sign-ups also posted by the end of the week.

In math this week, we are rounding with decimals, and in ELA we are continuing our unit and answering the question “What do good problem solvers do?”. It’s going to be another great week!

Thank you,

Ms. Beal

September 18th – 22nd

September 18, 2023

Welcome to another great week! We have started math tutoring on Mondays and Wednesdays, and it’s already been a great success. If your student has expressed concerns about math and I have not contacted you please feel free to let me know.

Our cookie dough/beef jerky fundraiser starts Monday, I will be sending home information about it early this week. Contact me with questions you may have, if I can’t answer them I can certainly find someone who can.

Also, mark your calendar for picture day on the 26th of September. Forms were sent out, but if you didn’t get one I’ve got extras! This is the photo that will go on their badge, and in the yearbook so they must be in uniform. We do take Spring pictures at the end of the year where they can choose what to wear but for this first one, it is uniform only.

September 11th – 15th

September 11, 2023

Another great week! As mentioned previously I will start math tutoring today (Monday) after school from 3:15-3:45 pm. Tutoring will be each week on Mondays and Wednesdays after school. I will send an email each week if your student could benefit from the topic we are covering in tutoring that week. Tutoring is used to help students with previously taught standards and those students who have been absent.

This week in math we will begin lesson 6, In this lesson, students will expand their understanding of place values to include decimals to the thousandths place. They learn that for both whole numbers and decimals, a digit in one place not only has ten times the value it would have in the place to its right but also has one-tenth the value it would have in the place it’s left. This means we will be using the multiply and dividing skills we have learned over the past few weeks and expanding our knowledge of numbers.

In ELA we will continue to discuss how we can re-read to compare characters, settings, or events in a story, drawing on specific details in the text. We will discuss the genre of realistic fiction and r-controlled vowels.

Important reminders:

  • Fall picture day will be September 26th.
  • We will have a substitute on Friday 15th. I will send an email with more details by the end of the week.
  • There is no parking allowed in the faculty parking lot.
  • You can subscribe to lunch account updates through Aspire, so you can keep up to date on your child’s lunch account balance. *Do this by clicking on the subscribe button on the top right corner after you log in to Aspire.
  • Opt-in for text reminders by texting the word ALERT to 22300.

As always thank you for your continued support!

Ms. Beal

September 5th – 8th

September 4, 2023

Families,

I will be out on bereavement leave Tuesday and Wednesday. My mother ended her 3-year long battle with cancer on Saturday. I talked with our class a week ago letting them know to expect a substitute within the next few weeks so it shouldn’t come as a complete surprise. We will have Ms. Tawny Wykstra substituting in our classroom, she has been at Quest for several years. Your students are in great hands!

Weekly Updates:

We had another busy week, we started into long division in math and will continue that next week. I will begin Math tutoring the week after this one and tutoring will be held from 3:15-3:45 Mondays and Wednesdays. Families can expect an email from me if their child would benefit. If your child expresses concern with math and I haven’t emailed you please let me know and I can add them in.

In ELA we will be discussing how we can reread to compare characters, settings, or events in a story, drawing on specific details in the text and our genre focus will be on realistic fiction. We have a set of new vocabulary and spelling words attached below, including what we will be further discussing.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns you may have.

Thank you,

Sara Beal

Cozy Day Success

September 2, 2023

Our first class party was a success! We wrote our spelling words in shaving cream. We used blooket to practice our cause and effect skills. Lastly, we enjoyed some floor time during meditation! Perfect way to end our first full week of school. I hope everyone has a fun and safe holiday weekend!
