We have earned our first class reward! We are going to have a “Cozy Day” tomorrow September 1st. Students may bring a blanket, pillow or other stuffed animal to rest their head, and/or a comfy. I look forward to earning more classroom rewards! See you tomorrow!
Yet another great week! I hope your child is enjoying their time in our classroom as much as I am. I have loved trying new things such as writing our spelling words in shaving cream! Our 5th-grade family is coming together fast!
For our first week in math, we introduced the standard algorithm for multiplication and it did start out a little challenging for some, however by the end of the week, I was watching your children help each other and get so excited about tackling this huge math power standard! We will continue working on this lesson on Monday and assess on Tuesday. For the rest of the week, we will work on dividing multi-digit numbers in lesson 5. Information on this lesson is below.
In ELA we discussed short vowels, the genre of narrative nonfiction, focusing on the importance of asking and answering questions when we read. This week we will continue those topics but will include discussing long vowels and reading text about how experiencing nature can change how we feel about it.
Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns and I’m looking forward to another great week!

Here we go, fifth-grade family! What an incredible first 3 days of school, I loved getting to know your child and seeing our classroom interact and come together. It’s going to be such a great year.
A quick reminder for this week-Thursday is an EARLY OUT (1:10pm) and Friday is a teacher-only work day, with NO SCHOOL for students.
This week we will complete our beginning of the year diagnostics and Dibels testing. and start our first math and ELA lessons. Please contact me with any questions at all.
If you haven’t done so, and it’s feasible at this time please pay your $30 supply fee.
We are painting eye masks today with puffy paint. We will be using the masks for weekly meditations. We talked about the importance of feeling our bodies and focusing on breathing. Despite my best attempts and warnings, we had a few students who spilled on themselves. Please wash clothing as soon as possible, the paint shouldn’t be set for 4 hours. I will update the blog with eye mask pictures next week.
**Note** If you haven’t had a chance to email me a picture of your student doing an activity this summer please do that this week. I will be preparing a video for next week with summer events. sbeal@questac.org

Additionally, students will need to bring the following items on the first day of school:
Headphones or earbuds – labeled with the student’s name. Parents will be responsible to replace broken or damaged headphones/earbuds throughout the year. We use headphones multiple times every day, throughout the day in the classroom. Please try to find the highest-quality headphones possible.
Water bottle – Student may bring a small water bottle that they can have with them throughout the day.
Small bag if needed – Only small bags are allowed for personal items if needed. Please, no large backpacks. They are not necessary. We are a technology school so we don’t send papers home often and classroom storage space is limited.
Additional donations for field trips and class parties may be requested as their respective dates approach.
Students can prepare for 5th grade by reading for 20 minutes every day, and practicing their multiplication and division math facts. Most of all, I hope you can get outside and have some fun!
Please email me with any questions or concerns you may have. We’re going to have an incredible year!
