Hello Team! Can you believe we are officially halfway through the year? I love to see how hard these students work and can’t wait for the adventures ahead of us! Remember, there is no school Monday, January 15th, for Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Hope you enjoy the long weekend!

This week, students will be completing their Middle of the Year (MOY) iReady Diagnostic Testing for math and ELA, their Acadience Testing for reading, and finishing their RISE Benchmark testing for science to see how they have improved from the first part of the year until now and to ensure they are being optimally challenged in their individual learning efforts. With this testing, the students will spend a bit more time on computers than normal, so if they use blue lens glasses they may want to bring them. I will make sure they get plenty of breaks but it will still be more screen time than usual. Students will also need a good working pair of headphones for this testing. Please check with your student to make sure theirs are still in working order, and if not, please furnish a new pair for them. We do not have any remaining class sets. It is important for all students to be at school on time and ready to rock! I can’t wait to see how they’ve grown already!

Two weeks from now are our Family-Teacher Conferences. If you haven’t done so yet, please sign up for a time that works best for your family here. These conferences will again be student led. I look forward to meeting with each of you and discussing their progress together!

As a reminder, I will be gone this Friday, January 19th through next Friday, January 26th, so there will be NO math tutoring this week or next week. I hope the students will show Mrs. Kearns how absolutely amazing they can be!

Next week, students will be learning how to add fractions with unlike denominators. In ELA, they will consider the question “what can you discover when you give things a second look?” In science, they will begin learning about the cycling of matter and food webs. Please encourage our awesome 5th graders to read at home, every night, for at least 20 minutes.

Thank you,
Mrs. Shaw
