We are now beginning Unit 9 in Language Arts. Below are the sight words, oral vocabulary words, letters, and sounds we will be mastering during the next 3 weeks. In addition, we continue to read decodable books and passages. You can encourage us to read the passages we bring home each week. We are also writing sentences about the texts we read.

As a class in math, we will be making teen numbers (ten and some more ones).

In science and STEM, we will be comparing how animals are alike and different. And we will be exploring how animals change their environments

As a class in math, we will be solving addition and subtraction word problems to 10. Individually, the students are working to master their current selected math standard and pass their math fluency level.

In science and STEM, we will be exploring plants and the things they need to survive. We will grow and care for our own plants. Watch for our plants to come home the Thursday before spring break.

The Utah State Board of Education is gifting each of our students 4 FREE books to be sent to your home this summer. Watch for a postcard coming soon and follow the steps to select your books. Happy Reading!

We are now beginning Unit 7 in Language Arts. Here are the sight words, oral vocabulary words, letters, and sounds we will be mastering during the next 3 weeks. In addition, we continue to read decodable books and passages. You can ask us which story we are preparing to pass off and how many more stories until we earn our next reward. We are also working on writing sentences. We ask ourselves…Does it have a capital? Does it have a space? Does it have punctuation in its place? Are the other letters lowercase?

In math, we will compose (put a number together using its parts) and decompose (break down numbers into parts) 6, 7, 8, and 9. Individually, the students are working to master their current selected math standard. Ask them about their Nearpod lessons and encourage them to try the challenge activity when they master the math standard. We are also becoming fluent with our math facts. Talk with your child about which math facts they are currently working on.

In science and STEM, we will be exploring animal shelters and how animals seek safety in order to survive.

We will be celebrating Valentine’s Day on Wednesday, February 14th. We will be having treats this day (an ice cream treat), parents gave permission for kindergarteners to have these foods at the beginning of the school year. If anything has changed with your child’s food needs contact me and we can update your preferences.

Students can bring a store-bought treat/candy for their peers on Valentine’s Day. These Valentine’s Day treats will be sent home to be consumed under parental supervision. Please complete the following form to indicate if you give permission or not for your child to receive Valentine’s Day treats from other students and to participate in our class party. Valentine Party Permission and Treat Acceptance Form

Valentine’s Helpful Hints:
1- We have 22 students in our class.
2- Only write who the Valentine is FROM. Do NOT address Valentine’s to each student (this will help the students distribute their Valentines more orderly).
3- We will be making Valentine’s bags (and providing the supplies to do so) in class for the students to collect their Valentine’s. No need to make a Valentine’s box this year.

We are now beginning Unit 6 in Language Arts. Here are the power (sight) words, oral vocabulary words, letters, and sounds we will be mastering during the next 3 weeks. Note: We are learning two letters and two power words each week (instead of one letter and one word each week). Your support and encouragement at home will be beneficial as we increase the learning rate.

In math, we are adding and subtracting. We are learning to be watchful for the + and – signs. We are also practicing our math fact fluency. We have started with +0 and -0 within 10. We have been counting the days we are in school and looking forward to celebrating our 100th day of Kindergarten on February 9.

In science and STEM, we are comparing weather patterns throughout the year. We are answering fun questions related to seasons. For example, we discovered which season our birthday occurs in and we will explore why birds lay eggs in the spring.

Parent Teacher Conferences will be held on Wednesday, January 31 and Thursday, February 1.  Please note: These will be early out days (1:10pm) and there will be no school on Friday (February 2).

Your child has a special presentation to share with you. Please select the date and time that is most convenient for you and your child to attend together. We are currently working on Unit 5 in Language Arts. Here are the power words, oral vocabulary words, letters, and sounds we will be mastering during this unit. We are continuing to work on handwriting and blending sounds to read words. We are reading decodable passages, watch for the passages in the student take home folders and invite your child to read to you.

In math, we are adding and subtracting. We are learning to be watchful for the + and – signs. One of our standards is to fluently add and subtract within 5 (answers that are 5 or less). We continue to work on our individual math pathways (on Nearpod). We enjoy celebrating as each child masters a standard. Hearing the class chimes ring and seeing the smiles of delight are some of our favorite moments.

Finally, in science we will begin our Seasons unit. We will discuss what to wear for different types of weather and explore the season cycles.

If you have an incoming sibling of a current student, they must be enrolled in the lottery to be eligible for acceptance. Please follow this LINK, or go to our website under ENROLLMENT to enroll.  

When filling out the enrollment application, please verify that you have completed the Sibling Preference section in its entirety in order for your student to be eligible for the sibling lottery. (See snapshot).

You will be notified via email of your child’s acceptance into the school, the next steps in the registration process, and what timeline you will need to follow in order to secure your child’s position at Quest.

The time has come for us to select a yearbook cover for our 2023-24 elementary yearbook. We will be holding a Yearbook Cover Contest to select two students whose artwork will be featured on the front and back cover of the yearbook. This year, students can choose to do artwork that is created digitally or hand-drawn. Each entry must be brought in on a white 8 ½ X 11” paper, and include the school name along with the student’s first and last name in one corner. We will be looking for entries that represent this year’s theme which is “BE GREAT!” 

Entries are due by Friday, January 5, at 8:30 am.

We are now beginning Unit 4 in Language Arts. Below are the power words, oral vocabulary words, letters, and sounds we will be mastering during the next 3 weeks. We have been introduced to all our sound wall sounds and are using our sound wall to help us spell words. We are working on handwriting and continuing to blend sounds to read words.

In math, we are exploring teen numbers. You can help us at home by providing extra practice reading and writing our numbers 11-20. We will also be mastering counting to 100 by 10’s and 1’s. In addition, we are making great progress on our individual math pathways (ask us about the standard we are working on).

We look forward to our science and STEM lessons. We are exploring forces and working to solve problems together in groups. We look forward to completing our forces unit with a visit from Discovery Gateway on Thursday, December 14. They will have several fun force and motion activities for us.
