Rock Sorting Activity

We are learning all about rocks in science! On Monday we will be doing an activity that involves sorting rocks. Students need to bring in 8-10 rocks….NO MORE! Look in your backyard, the neighborhood park, or wherever you can! Thanks for your participation in this fun unit. Check out our SPECTACULAR bulletin board that a few parents did for us! ABC Countdown!

The end of the year is almost here! We are going to count down the last 26 days by celebrating a letter of the alphabet each day. Participation in these extra activities will be based on student behavior in class. The countdown will start on Monday, April 22nd. Let’s make the rest of our 2nd Grade the Best Year Ever!   4/22-4/26 A-Art Day. We will be doing a fun art project. B-Baby Picture Day. Please bring a baby picture of yourself, with your name on the back. C-Celebration Day. We will Celebrate all we’ve learned this year. D-Dancing Day. We will have some fun Dance time in class. E-Experiment Day. We will be doing a couple experiments.   4/29-5/3 F-Fun in the Sun Day. We will have some of our lessons outside (Weather Permitting.) G-Game Day. Bring a board game to play. Games will be kept in a safe place during the day and will be played during the last 30 minutes of school. No electronic games! H-Hooray for you Day! Write a letter to yourself about something you have accomplished during the school year! I-Imagination Day. We will use our imagination when we write and do art. J-Jump Rope Day. Participate in a jump rope challenge.   5/6-5/10 K-Kickball Day. We will play kickball with all of 2nd Grade! L-Laughing Day. Come prepared to share an appropriate joke with the class. M-Marker Day. We can do all of our assignments in marker for the day. N-Nice Note Day. Students will write a note to someone who has done something nice for them. O-Outside Fieldtrip Day! Wear your Red or White shirts for the fieldtrip.   5/13-5/17 P-Picnic Day. We will be eating our lunch outside. Bring a blanket to sit on. Q-Quickest Day. We will have class Olympics outside. R- Read-a-thon Day. Bring a book and a pillow and get ready to read. S- Silly Stories Day. Bring a silly story to class to share. We will also write some silly stories. T-Thankful Day. We will write a letter to the 1st graders why we were Thankful for 2nd grade.   5/20-5/24 U- USA Day. Students with a last name A-H wear Red, I-P wear White and Q-Z wear Blue shirts.  We will have prizes who participate. V-Video Day. We will watch a video. Bring a pillow to cuddle with. W-Wild About Learning Day. Bring a fun fact to share about your favorite “Wild” animal. X-Xtra Nice Day. We will do something nice for another class. Y-You are special Day! Tell about something that makes you special. We will also Share reasons why we think our classmates are special.   5/28 Z-Zip Up Your Backpacks and Zoom Home Day!

Rock Unit Permission Slips

Our 2nd graders have begun work on our Rock Unit.  We are excitedly looking forward to learning about metamorphic, sedimentary, and igneous rocks. Part of our unit includes a lab where we look at the makeup of each particular rock category.  We will be using chocolate chip cookies, as well as Snickers Bars, as learning tools. Quest Academy requires us to get parental permission to allow the students to be able to eat food in the classroom.  If you would like your child to be able to participate in this learning experience, please sign and return the permission slip before April 19th.  If you do not want your child to participate we will have a separate activity that they will be able to do. Homework

Nightly Homework Every Monday I will post a list of 5 high frequency words (spelling words) that your child will need to be able to read/use in a sentence/SPELL! Students will be tested on Friday! SIGHT WORD LIST: got, form, land, really, answer Word Sorts Daily practice of lessons is critical to your child’s academic success. Children need to be completing their homework daily. All of the spelling (word work) assignments are the same weekly, only the word lists change. The new words can be found here on the blog on Monday, therefore you are able to complete assignments as it fits your schedule. Your child’s Word Sorts are specific to their learning needs. Passing word sorts with a proficiency level of 80% is required. If your child did not pass their word sort test last week, they will continue to work on their previous sort until it is mastered. Tests will be passed back on Mondays, a sticker on their test indicates a passing grade, please continue on to the next sort.   • Typing spelling lists on the computer is very motivating.  Or have them use the computer to write sentences for each spelling words.  It’s a great way to teach word processing skills.
  • Invest in a set of letter stampers and let your child stamp out their spelling words.
  • Give your child a Scrabble board.  Let them take the letters out of the bag, lay them on the table face-up, and try to fit all of their spelling words on the board.
  • Collage- cut individual letter from magazines to spell out your words.
  • Get a set of magnetic letters.  (You can find them cheap at garage sales.)  Give your child letters, a spelling list, and a timer.  See if they can complete it in 1-3 minutes.
  • Create a Wordle using your spelling words (Use the 5 High frequency words for this week)
Go to wordle.net, Have your child type in all of their spelling words and print off a cool wordle!
  • Go to SpellingCity.com and practice your spelling words, practice tests and play games. The username is your first initial, then last name @quest (no space). The password is rams. ex:acashin@quest. Accounts have been set up!
  Math
