Use the Add:Subt WS to solve these problems.  Students may use the different methods they have learned (Draw It, Jump,  or Stretch It Out).

I hope your holiday break was enjoyable!  It is time for school again and I am so excited to see everyone!

We will have no homework this first week since it is a short week.

We will be starting our new science unit on Communities and Maps.  For our STEM project this month, we will need donations of cardboard.  The pieces need to be cut so they are flat pieces only.  This is a great way to get through that after-Christmas pile that has taken over!  Send in any flat pieces of cardboard with your student by the 12th so we know how much we have to work with.  Any left over will be used for an art project I have planned!

We will also be starting our new chapter in math which focuses on 3-digit subtraction.  We will be using the same strategies from the last chapter with the exception of the open number line, this one was the least favorite.  I will post videos again to explain each strategy.

Last quarter, we really struggled with Standard L2.4b which focuses on Prefixes.  We recently revisited this concept and the students were much more successful!  This has been submitted to their grade book for you to see.  There will be three additional standards posted after the 5th of the month.  We are revisiting difficult concepts and discovering new ones each day.  They are working so hard!

The 5th method taught today was a method to double check our answers using addition. We will practice this again tomorrow.
We will be doing our STEM challenge on Thursday. Students need to bring their “junk” from home. They are making a toy or game from stuff found at home such as cardboard, plastic, or anything else you plan to get rid of. Students need to be creative and nothing should be purchased for this challenge.  It is up to each student to bring their items in from home.

We will be taking our math test this week.  We will review the different methods and double check our answers using addition.  For homework, please print out the same worksheet from last week and use the different methods to solve the following problems.  Students should have a favorite method or two that they can do independently.  On the test, they need to show mastery by using more than one method.  The videos on the blog can be used as a reference.

We have a parent that has arranged for a donation from Sweet Tooth Fairy for our Christmas Party.  Every student must have permission to be able to enjoy this special treat.  Because it is a donation, we do not know which items we will be getting.  For this reason, I have a question on the following form allowing you to indicate if there is anything specific that your child cannot have.  Please fill out the form no later than Wednesday, December 13th.  Thanks!
