Adding by Tens and Ones is a difficult concept. Here is what I had the kids do today that seemed to help. We will be reviewing this concept tomorrow.
- First have the kids rewrite ALL number sentences vertically. MAKE SURE THEY LINE UP ALL THE NUMBERS IN THE 10’S PLACE “UNDER THE TEN’S PLACE,” AND THE ONE’S, “UNDER THE ONES PLACE. ” Then have them draw a line down the middle, dividing the tens and ones. I call it a graphic organizer
- Have them write lines, representing base 10 rods, next to the numbers in the tens place, and circles, next to the numbers in the ones place
- Count the 10’s and 1’s.
