Baggie Books and Student Reading Levels
Parents,
Just a little update as far as passing on to a new level/color in the READING FOR ALL LEARNERS (Baggie Books) Please DO NOT sign your student off if they CAN NOT READ THE ENTIRE BOOK FLUENTLY and with NO MORE THAN 3 MISTAKES. I am having too have students repeat either some OR all of the previous color, which is very upsetting to everyone. They understand why when I talk with them but it’s still hard. YOU ARE NOT DOING YOUR STUDENTS A FAVOR BY SIMPLY SIGNING THEM OFF SO THEY GET A NEW BOOK EVERY DAY.
As Mrs. Sharp tests them for their current reading level using Fauntus and Pinnell…many ARE NOT doing as well as we expected. One of the biggest reasons is because they CAN NOT answer the comprehension questions that go along with the stories. I CAN NOT STRESS enough as to the importance of being able to RETELL a story with accurate details in order…What happened first, next. then, and then, and last. If your student can’t answer questions like this with everything they read…PLEASE, PLEASE. PLEASE…work on this important skill. IT IS JUST IMPORTANT TO UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU ARE READING, AS IT IS TO READ FLUENTLY!!! If your student still struggles to sound out words, then they will almost always have a hard time with comprehension. They have to work so hard to just figure out what they are reading, they are not able to pay attention to what they are reading about. Practice is the best way to improve on something that is hard. If you want your student to do better have them read to you more not just you reading to them!

February 14th Valentines Day Updates
I will be providing ALL the kids with a sack they will decorate in class, AND which they will be putting their valentines in, SO NO NEED TO STRESS OVER MAKING A BOX ETC. It’s something that they really like to do AND they turn out so cute. - WE have 25 students in our class so please make sure your student has enough cards etc. for each child. NO NEED TO PUT NAMES ON THE CARDS JUST WHO IT IS FROM.
- I KNOW IT’S TEMPTING TO ADD CANDY OR SOME OTHER KIND OF TREAT, BUT AS PER QUEST FOOD POLICY,…STUDENTS ARE NOT ALLOWED TO BRING IN FOOD TO PASS OUT. IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO DO SOMETHING OTHER THAN CARDS, YOU CAN DO PENCILS, ERASERS, OR SOME OTHER LITTLE CHEEP TRINKET.
- We will be having a first grade party with 2 rotations like we did at Christmas and Halloween. We will rotate with the Nelson/Bischoff class. In our classroom will be doing a craft and in the Nelson/Bischoff class students will have treats, and games.
- I love and need volunteers so if you have time, and want to get some of your volunteer hours in, this might be something you can look at. We are going to start the fun after recess in the afternoon so approximately 1:30ish-2:30ish.

First Grade Mad Sciene/Art Club
We still have THREE open spots in club! These three spots will be filled first come, first serve (and paid for) on Monday, Feb. 2.
Club will meet from 3:00-3:45 on the following Tuesdays: February 6th, February 13th, February 27th, March 6th, and March 13th. Pick up near the front doors of Q1 is at 3:45 sharp! The fee for this club will be $5.
Students will only be allowed to participate in 1 club each year and rules stated in the contract must be followed for continuation of club involvement.

The purpose of this homework is for a quick review, some practice, and a chance for parents to see what their child is learning in math. Please complete every other problem (alternate between evens and odds so your child gets practice doing story problems AND “Vocabulary Check”/ “Test Practice” problems each week). If your child wants to do every problem they are certainly free to do so!
Please help your child read the directions/example problems and allow them to talk about the problems as they figure out the answers. Please check your child’s answers for accuracy.2. Fluency Timings:
This week, we are working on “Leftovers.” With your timing in the plastic sheet protector (included in your blue folder), use a dry-erase marker to practice. When you’re ready, have a parent time you while you complete all 20 problems with pencil (write directly on the paper this time). Work on 1 timing each day, Monday-Thursday. Record your time and score on the paper and turn it in with your math homework at the end of the week.Helpful Hint for the “Leftovers”:These leftover facts are the only ones that don’t use any of the addition or subtraction strategies we’ve learned. Students can use FLASHCARDS to MEMORIZE them (included in homework), use DOUBLES + 2, or USE A # LINE to help solve.

- Have your student go through and HIGHLIGHT EVERY WORD THEY KNOW.
- Talk about the other words, looking for words within words, words with vowel teams, CVCe (Tickle E Words) etc.
- Read the entire passage with your student. They should be pointing to each word as you are reading together. They should also be reading ALL the words that they knew and HIGHLIGHTED.
- Lastly, talk about all the fun, cool, interesting facts from the passage. There will be many!!!
- You may count this time towards your reading minutes for the day as it is more lengthy AND if done the right fun for your student!
- Time your student for 1 minute and see how far they get each day. Circle the last word they read each night.

Look at the addend that isn’t a 9 and think “One less than”. Use the number that is “one less than” to add on to 10. (You’re making a ten in your head)
Example: 9 + 5. Look at the added that isn’t a 9 (in this case 5) and think “one less than” (4). Add 4 on to 10. 4 + 10 = 14

Weekly Reminders
1- FRIDAY: Early Out 1:30pmHomework due
$1.00 Dress Down Day (Student participation is optional. Students are welcome to wear a Quest Spirit shirt with uniform pants or traditional uniforms).

IMPORTANT!!! First Grade Science/Art Club Sign-Up Information
IMPORTANT!! Second session for our first grade Mad Scientist & Art Club information below…
The 2nd session of our first grade Mad Scientist/Art Club is about to begin!
Club will meet from 3:00-3:45 on the following Tuesdays: February 6th, February 13th, February 27th, March 6th, and March 13th. Pick up near the front doors of Q1 is at 3:45 sharp! The fee for this club will be $5.
Admission into the club is limited to 20 students and will be on a first come, first serve basis. The first 20 contracts turned in to the Q1 office starting January 26th (The office will not accept applications before January 26th) will be accepted. We will inform those who have been selected and you will have until January 31st to turn in your fee or forfeit your space. (Students will only be allowed to participate in 1 club and rules stated in the contract must be followed for continuation of club involvement).
