1. Math Homework:
Monday Lesson 4: Tens and Some More
Tuesday Lesson 5: Tens and Ones
Wednesday Lesson 6:
Problem Solving Strategy
Thursday Lesson 7: Numbers to 100
  • 1. Worksheets: Please look in the front of your child’s  green folder on Monday for worksheets with concepts that will be taught in class.  The purpose of this homework is for a quick review, some practice, and a chance for parents to see what their child is learning in math.  Please complete every other problem (alternate between evens and odds so your child gets practice doing story problems AND “Vocabulary Check”/ “Test Practice” problems each week).  If your child wants to do every problem they are certainly free to do so! :) Please help your child read the directions/example problems and allow them to talk about the problems as they figure out the answers. Please check your child’s answers for accuracy.

  • 2. Fluency Timings:
Word Problems: (No fluency this week)                                                                      Students have been working on reading story problems for understanding.  We have been looking for key words in story problems for hints (“in all” usually means add, “how many more” means to subtract, etc.  See below). Please help them read the problems, but let them figure out if the problem is an addition or subtraction problem.  They can act it out, draw a picture, draw a part/part/whole chart, or anything that helps them to visualize what is going on in the story. Feel free to give hints, but let them try to figure it out.  Make sure they write down the number sentence used to solve the problem and not just the answer. To help spread out the work, they could work on 2-3 problems each night.  PLEASE DO EACH WORD PROBLEM.

3. Reading 20 minutes/5 days or a total of 100 minutes/week.

***Reading comprehension strategy: Help your child read a story and think of a title for it.
Then ask your child to RETELL the STORY IN THEIR OWN WORDS. The DETAILS need to be IN ORDER  from the story.UNDERSTANDING what you are reading is just as important as how fast you read (FLUENCY)!!!

PLEASE use these Re-Tell Ropes whenever you are reading with your student checking for understanding.  THIS  HELPS STUDENTS PREPARE FOR OUR  LANGUAGE ARTS WORK ON AND DIBELS  TEST COMPREHENSION.

Reading Fluency Passages:
  • I talked with the kids for a long time today about how to do the reading fluency page. Please follow the steps below EXACTLY for greater success
  1. Have your student go through and HIGHLIGHT EVERY WORD THEY KNOW.
  2. Talk about the other words looking for words within words, words with vowel teams, CVCe (Tickle E Words) etc.
  3. Read the entire passage with your student. They should be pointing to each word as you are reading together. They should also be reading ALL the words that they knew and HIGHLIGHTED.
  4. Lastly, talk about all the fun, cool, interesting facts from the passage. There will be many!!!
  5. You may count this time towards your reading minutes for the day as it is more lengthy AND if done the right fun for your student!
  6. Time your student for 1 minute and see how far they get each day. Circle the last word they read each night.

Quest Food Wellness Polacy AND Valentines Day

Image result for valentines free clip artStores are now stocked and ready for Valentine’s Day.  To help you properly prepare for our in class celebrations, here are the Quest guidelines in regards to Valentine’s:

“Per Quest’s wellness policy, all food in the classroom must be preapproved. Furthermore, parental permission is also required for students to consume food during class parties. Due to this policy—as in years past—student Valentines cannot contain edible items. Suggestions for nonfood Valentines include pencils, erasers, bubbles, stickers, etc. Please note that such items, including Valentine cards, are in no way required.”

American Heroes Homework Passages

Related imageDear Parents,
I wanted to address a concern that you may be having with the reading passage/homework assignment. I know they can be difficult for my students. I suggest that you read the passage together with your student SEVERAL times.

When you are reading it with them…PLEASE help them
1st. Find ALL the words they know right off AND PRAISE THEM!!!
2nd. Help them by talking about the ALL other words to see if THEY CAN RECOGNIZE or FIND
words within words, Vowel teams, CVC or CVCe words.

This will also help them recall reading strategies we work on in class. While I don’t expect them to be able to read it in a minute they should get better and more confident with each reading even with help.

These passages help the kids become familiar, and go along with, our American Heroes History study. We read the passages and talk about each person in class too. We have projects and activities planned around each hero. We have “SPECIAL” guest visitors scheduled to come in character on Fridays to talk with the students about that weeks specific Hero.

I want students to learn that “They CAN read hard things.” The passages that they will be reading for DIBLES are also difficult which was another reason for the change. I didn’t want to blindside them by throwing a long passage at them and expect them not to freak out. I will talk with all the kids about the passages when I return to class this week. In the mean time, let them know that I am SO VERY PROUD OF HOW WELL THEY ARE DOING AND THAT I THINK THEY ARE AWESOME and making GREAT PROGRESS!

Manditory School Name Badges

http://qacblogs.org/ronda.hills/files/2018/01/id1.png
Quest Families,

We are hoping to get some help with an issue we are having at the school regarding missing name badges. As stated in our Handbook, “Everyone is required to wear their name badge to attend class (the name badge must be that of the current school year). Please reinforce having name badges as they create a safer environment at the school. To replace a lost name badge, your child will need to pay $5.00 for a new one. A student without a name badge will be referred to the office to call home. Parents/Guardians will be expected to bring their child’s name badge or pay $5.00 for a replacement. Only then will students be allowed to return to class.” Elementary students are to leave their name badges in their classrooms at the end of the day. Jr. High students are encouraged to leave their name badges in their lockers before leaving. To ensure your child receives a full day’s worth of learning in the classroom, please make sure their name badge is left at school and returned the following day if accidentally taken home. Please note, that you have this week as a grace period to either find your child’s lost name badge or replace it for $5.00. Starting Tuesday, January 16 (one week from today), students who do not have name badges will not be attending class until a new one is purchased or their old one is returned. If parents are working when their children call, they are more than welcome to either pay for a badge using a credit card over the phone or to pay online.

Thanks for all you do.

  • 2. Fluency Timings: This week, we are working on “Subtraction by Counting Next Door Neighbors and Near Neighbors .

With your timing in the plastic sheet protector (included in your GREEN folder), use a dry-erase marker to practice MONDAY-THURSDAY. On THURSDAY, have a parent time you while you complete all 20 problems with pencil (write directly on the paper this time). Work on 1 timing each day, Monday-Thursday. On Thursday, record your time and score on the paper, THEN attach it to your student’s homework at the end of the week. [The target goal is to finish all 20 problems in 1 minute, with 90% accuracy (18 out of 20 problems correct).]

    • Use your counting back skills to COUNT BACK 1, 2, or 3. Start with the biggest number and count back to see how many “Doors Down” the other number/neighbir is. This only works for Subtraction and when the numbers are with in 2 or 3!

    • Example: 11-9=2  Start with 11 then COUNT DOWN/BACK two neighbors. You should have 2 fingers up which is much easier

Reading Fluency Passages:
*****NEW THIS WEEK***
Please read over the Martin Luther King Jr. fluency passage several times with your student. POINT OUT THE WORDS YOUR STUDENT KNOWS and then GO OVER THE ONES THAT ARE TRICKY.

Have them sound out words that follow “Regular Rules.” Time them for ONE, 1 minute timing each day to see how far they can read on their own.
Their accuracy/fluency should increase each time they read the sentences.

***Write down how long you timed them (ie 1minute) circle the last word they read, then record the number of words read correctly next to the minutes timed ON THE BACK OF THE PASSAGE.
***You may count the timings toward your student’s required weekly reading minutes.***

**Please take a few minutes to review what your student writes as well as how. I am VERY picky about where letters are placed, and how they are formed. There should always be a space between words.
***Your student should NEVER BEGIN ANY LETTER FROM THE BOTTOM!!!! ***NO BOTTOM DWELLERS!!! It’s so important that students form good writing habits now. Bad habits are VERY hard to break!

Student Tests and Mastery

Parents,
Since this week is the end of the quarter, there will be several assessments given in both math and LA. Please make every effort to have your student here and on time.

We have been working VERY HARD on fact families throughout the school year. Some of the kids have this concept down and are masters others are VERY inconsistent with how they are doing. I am going to be sending home the assessment we did today with the kids tomorrow. PLEASE CHECK YOUR STUDENT’S HOMEWORK FOLDER TO SEE HOW THEY DID. Please HELP your student if they haven’t mastered the concept. I will work with them tomorrow as well as retest the kids that are below 80% again on Wednesday.

The Chapter 4 review I sent home for homework is what the kids will be tested on Thursday. This is our BIG TEST for the term. The review should give you a little idea as to where your student is, what their understanding per concept is, and what they need extra practice with at school and home.
Thanks for all your support. YOU ALL HAVE AMAZING KIDS!!!
