Homework for October 30-November 3rd

  • Parents, Please make sure your student has their backpack, homework folder and Baggie Book EVERYDAY!!! On another IMPORTANT NOTE, I REALLY NEED STUDENTS TO BE HERE EVERYDAY AND ON TIME!!! We have students that are consistently 5-30 minutes late each day! It is VERY frustrating to students and teachers alike when this happens.
  • PARENTS,  I WILL NOT BE COLLECTING ANY HOMEWORK UNTIL FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 10TH due to this being a short week with many activities. I also want/need PLENTY of time to work on the current concepts in both LA and Math. PLEASE!!!! PAY CLOSE ATTENTION AS TO WHEN TO DO WHAT, I DO NOT WANT THE KIDS WORKING ON TASKS BEFORE I HAVE TAUGHT THEM IN MATH!!!

There are 5 Components to Homework this week.
1. My Math Homework Worksheets Subtraction Lessons 5-6
2. Timed Math Fluency
3. Reading 20-3o minutes/day
4. Timed Fluency Passages
5. Spelling/Vocabulary Words

All Math, Spelling and Fluency Homework is Due Friday, October 27th

1. Math Homework:
Monday Lesson 5: Use Near Doubles to Add
Tuesday Lesson : NO HOMEWORK Halloween Activities
Wednesday Lesson 5: Review Use Near Doubles
Thursday Lesson 6: Problem Solving: Act it Out

  • Worksheets: Please look in the front of your child’s  green folder on Monday for worksheets with concepts that will be taught in class.  The purpose of this homework is for a quick review, some practice, and a chance for parents to see what their child is learning in math.  Please complete every other problem (alternate between evens and odds so your child gets practice doing story problems AND “Vocabulary Check”/ “Test Practice” problems each week).  If your child wants to do every problem they are certainly free to do so! :) Please help your child read the directions/example problems and allow them to talk about the problems as they figure out the answers. Please check your child’s answers for accuracy.

  • 2. Fluency Timings: This week, we are working on “Count on 1, 2, or 3” again with greater numbers.  With your timing in the plastic sheet protector (included in your GREEN folder), use a dry-erase marker to practice MONDAY-THURSDAY. On THURSDAY, have a parent time you while you complete all 20 problems with pencil (write directly on the paper this time). Work on 1 timing each day, Monday-Thursday. Record your time and score on the paper, THEN attach it to your student’s homework at the end of the week. [The target goal is to finish all 20 problems in 1 minute, with 90% accuracy (18 out of 20 problems correct).]

    •  Helpful Hint:  Here’s how we’re learning to “count on” in class:  Don’t COUNT  bigger number, don’t count the ALL,  JUST say the bigger number and count on the small…They totally loved this.

(Example: 2 + 5.  Snap your finger (or clap) and say “5” then count on 2 more: say 5 (with a clap)…6…7)

(Example: 3 + 5.  Snap your finger (or clap) and say “5” then count on 3 more: say 5 (with a clap)…6…7…8)

I Love to read!
3. Reading 20 minutes/5 days or a total of 100 minutes/week:
RECORD YOUR READING ON YOUR  “BOOK IT”  READING LOG located in your green folder.

***There are SEVERAL SOURCES for reading:
Books from HOME LIBRARIES  or the PUBLIC LIBRARY
and “Baggy Books.”  PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU SEND YOUR STUDENT’S “BAGGIE BOOK” TO SCHOOL EVERYDAY. Please use the “EASINESS” of  “Baggie Books” as a time to practice making predictions and ask GOOD comprehension questions.

Don’t forget about reading comprehension! Understanding what you are reading is just as important as being a fluent reader!!! PLEASE use these Re-Tell Ropes whenever you are reading with your student checking for understanding.  THIS  HELPS STUDENTS PREPARE FOR OUR  LANGUAGE ARTS WORK ON W AND DIBELS  TEST COMPREHENSION.

4. Reading Fluency Passages:
Please read over each sentence several times with your student so they become familiar with the words. Have them practice sounding
out words that follow “Regular Rules” and then stop and think about the words that are “Red or Rule Breakers.” Time them for ONE, one-two minute timing to see how far they can read on their own. Their accuracy/fluency should increase each time.
Write down how long you timed them (ie 1-2 minutes) then CIRCLE THE LAST WORD READ EACH DAY!  Encourage them to read further each night when timing. I am only requiring ONE, one-two minute timing/night for now. AS they become more comfortable, confident, successful readers, I will have you time them up to the three times/night with the idea that they will eventually be able to completely read each passage in one minute.
***You may count the timings toward your student’s required weekly reading minutes.***

5. Spelling/Phonics and High Frequency Words
Just for fun, help your child make new words by changing the first letter as well as vowel sounds of words.
The kids really like this “GAME”

This week’s phonic focus is on beginning and ending consonant digraphs th, sh, and ng  such as in ship, fish, thing, with, sang.
NEW PHONICS FOCUS WORDS:
fish
shop
ship
with
thing
sang

REVIEW WORDS:

fast
wink

VOCABULARY HF WORDS:
want
call

**Please take a few minutes to review what your student has writes as well as how. I am starting to get VERY picky about where the letters go,  and how they are formed AND that there is a space between words.
Your student should NEVER BEGIN ANY LETTER FROM THE BOTTOM!!!! ***NO BOTTOM DWELLERS!!! It’s so important that students form good writing habits now. Bad habits are VERY hard to break!

Important: Doubles!!!

Math homework this week includes “DOUBLES” problems.  Here is our doubles rap and doubles “pictures” that we will be learning in the next few days.  Use these to help start memorizing the doubles and answer homework questions. Just FYI, the kids are doing VERY well as a whole on doubles, but are a little unsure of doubles +1 and -1.

Screen Shot 2017-10-27 at 8.04.52 PM

Here’s how we’re making mental pictures of our doubles

2 + 2 = 4      Picture a wagon with 2 wheels on each side and 4 wheels total

3 + 3 = 6      Picture a 6 pack of soft drinks, with 3 cans on each side

4 + 4 = 8      Picture a spider with 4 legs on each side and 8 legs total

5 + 5 = 10   Picture 5 fingers on each hand and 10 fingers total

6 + 6 = 12   Picture a dozen of eggs with 6 eggs in each row and 12 eggs total

7 + 7 = 14   Picture two weeks on a calendar with 7 days in each week and 14 days total

8 + 8 = 16   Picture a 16 pack of crayons with 8 crayons in each row and 16 crayons total

9 + 9 = 18   Picture a semi (18 wheeler) with 9 wheels on each side and 18 wheels total

10 + 10 = 20  Picture all your fingers and toes for a total of 20

Halloween Party and Parade Up-Dates

http://qacblogs.org/ronda.hills/files/2014/10/happy-halloween1.jpegThe Quest Academy Halloween Parade will begin at 9:00am. Parents are welcome to watch the parade as students walk through the Q2 gym.

We are having a Halloween Party at 11:30. If you didn’t sign up to help, but would still like to volunteer, please let us know.
Our classroom will host a Halloween craft and it’s always nice to have extra hands :)
We are requesting a $12 donation for the three holiday parties we will host this year (Halloween, Christmas, and Valentine’s).  These donations help pay for party costs such as; sugar cookies and supplies to decorate the cookies.  You may pay $4 for the Halloween party or you may pay the complete party donation of $12 now at the Q1 office

Costume Guidelines:
Please note that costumes should be modest and without blood or gore. Though students may paint their faces, masks and weapons are not allowed. Anything that depicts violence is banned (knives, guns, swords, spears, etc.). Just to reiterate, no blood, either depicted on the costume or in makeup, is allowed.

Our Food Drive Has Started

http://qacblogs.org/tracey.wagster/files/2017/10/Food-Drive-Box-of-Canned-Goods.jpg
We are collecting food for those less fortunate. 1 in 5 kids in Utah goes hungry everyday. That’s just devastating to think about!!  Please send as much as you can. (Non perishable only.) I believe we will be collecting for the next 2 weeks. There are also rewards for the grade and class that collects the most… so of course, we’re up for that!! We want to help all those families… thanks for your support!!

Dear Parents,
As part of our Fall/Halloween celebration on Tuesday, October 31st,  we have scheduled the 1st grade party from 11:45-1:05. This should give us enough time to get all the first grade students back to the classroom after lunch, and if we’re lucky,…HAHAHAHA…a little time to get them settled down before the second round of fun begins. It should also give us just enough time to have the kids clean up and prepare to go home at the end of the day.

Many of you have asked about what you can do, or if I/we need any help. All I can say is, “Many hands make light work AND… ALL HANDS ON DECK!!!!” There is no such thing as too many helpers, in our room, on party days. We will be having 2 rotations, each lasting 40 minutes  This should give all the students plenty of time to complete the planned activities and not feel rushed.  Each student will have the opportunity to do the same craft(s), decorate cookies, and watch a couple fun stories/movies and play some games. One of the planned crafts is skeleton made out of Qtips.

As of yesterday, only 7 of our students have made the requested $12 class party donation (to the office).  REMEMBER THIS DONATION IS FOR ALL THE PARTIES FOR THE ENTIRE YEAR! We can’t make these events happen successfully without your much needed donations of time, and money. Please make your donations to the office if you haven’t already done so.

Thank you so much for helping make a memorable, fun learning experience for our students!  We couldn’t do this without your continued support!

Thank you!!!!
Mrs. Vella & Mrs. Sharp
