Happy Summer Break!!!

Image result for summer break free clip artI hope you had a wonderful Memorial Weekend and are ready to play this summer. I have been thinking about all of you and hope you are well. Stay tuned for fun summer get togethers….

Some of you have asked to be able to go on Waterford this summer. I set up Waterford during the school year, which if I understand correctly, you should still be able to access. I had the setting for once per day. I would look through an email that you should have received from them around February…Let me know if you can’t find it or have trouble accessing it.

Waterford Early Learning Home Usage

star clip art

Here is the post from January about the Waterford home usage email..

You should have all received an email from WEL support within the last hour or so today.

Waterford is a Language Arts program that  All the first grade students use daily. It’s one of the ways we combine the use of technology with Language Arts. We have now made it available for home usage at no charge. Right now I have it set up so your student can only do one session from home/day. Each session lasts 20 minutes. Please feel free take advantage of this great program, and let me know if you have any questions.

***I have made a few adjustments to some of the students Waterford levels. I based these changes on what I know they can do, as well as what I want them to be working on, so your student may or may not see some changes in ease or difficulty or their past level. I will revisit their activity and scores periodically over the next 30 days and, if necessary, make any additional adjustments as needed at that time.

****BONUS!!! YOU MAY COUNT 5 WATERFORD MINUTES/EACH DAY YOUR STUDENT COMPLETES A SESSION, AT HOME, TOWARDS YOUR STUDENT’S  READING MINUTES FOR THAT DAY ….BUT ONLY 5 MINUTES. AGAIN THAT ONLY APPLIES IF YOUR STUDENT ACTUALLY GOT ON A COMPUTER, AT HOME, AND COMPLETED THE ENTIRE 20 MINUTE SESSION FOR THAT DAY.

Reminder of Summer Reading Programs

Just a reminder from a couple previous posts. LOL As you can see I am all about summer reading…OR RATHER…reading in general. When My kids were young, I set aside a time everyday when they did a quick homework page for review and read for at least 20 minutes. The review worksheets/activities were from a consumable from “Summer Bridge.” You can find it at Utah Idaho, Walmart, or on line book stores.

Don’t Let Your Kids Brains Turn TO Mush

http://qacblogs.org/megan.dunmeyer/files/2015/05/Summer-Learning.jpg
Your child has worked SO hard this year and deserves to maintain or even increase his/her skills over the summer!  Here are some ideas for keeping your child learning over the summer:

#1: READ!

No other skill is more important to maintain over the summer months.  Children who read regularly are shown to have higher intelligence and general knowledge, less stress, better fluency, improved analytical thinking, broader vocabulary, better memory and increased writing skills. Please use every opportunity (long car rides, waits at the dentist/doctor, before bedtime, etc.) to have your child read to you.

#2: Write!

Writing is “backwards reading” and not only improves your child’s writing skills, but also improves his/her reading skills as well.  Encourage your child to use best penmanship and to sound out words phonetically, and assist your child in creating complete sentences that include proper use of upper and lower-case letters, and to include proper punctuation.

  • Encourage your child to keep a journal of events or discoveries over the summer months.  You may even have your child continue to use the extra pages in his/her first grade journal, which is in a format familiar to your child.  I strongly encourage students to write (with an actual paper and pencil!) over the summer – not just write electronically.  This helps to maintain proper penmanship and puts a greater focus on sentence structure, rather than on hunting for letters on a keyboard.
  • Electronic writing is great, too, though!  It is important that your child maintain familiarity with the keys on the keyboard! :)

#3: Math!

We learned SO many different math skills this year and it is important that your child remember these skills so that he/she can build on them in 2nd grade!  Review addition, subtraction, place value, time, measurement, 2 and 3-dimensional shapes, graphing, skip-counting, etc. with your child! ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT THINGS YOU CAN REVIEW OVER THE SUMMER ARE THE BASIC ADDITION AND SUBTRACTION FACTS UP TO 20.  THESE WILL BE VERY HELPFUL TO KNOW FOR DOUBLE-DIGIT ADDITION AND SUBTRACTION IN SECOND GRADE!

EXTRA EXTRA READ ALL ABOUT IT! FIRST GRADE Patriotic Concert TOMORROW

PERFORMANCES WILL BE:

Wednesday, May 17: ASSEMBLY FOR STUDENTS/FACULTY ONLY – 1:45-2:45

Wednesday, May 17: PARENT/FAMILY PERFORMANCE – 6:00-7:00 (doors will open at 5:40) in the Q1 gym (PLEASE PLAN TO BRING YOUR OWN CHAIRS AND/OR BLANKETS FOR SEATING; CHAIR SEATING WILL BE TOWARD THE BACK OF THE GYM, BLANKETS UP FRONT)

The entire first grade will be performing a Patriotic Concert two times on Wednesday, May 17th, once at 1:45 (for students and faculty only) and once at 6:00 in the evening (for family and friends), both in the Elementary (Q1) gym. Please have your child to the gym by 5:40 that evening, dressed in a RED SHIRT and uniform bottoms.  Any patriotic accessories, such as hairbows, pins, belts, ties, etc., are encouraged!! (Please avoid any tall accessories, such as tall hats, that could potentially block the view of other children standing behind your child.)

We would like to honor any veterans in the audience, so we encourage you to invite any friends or family members who have served in the military to join us!  The performance will not last more than an hour.

The first grade will be performing this same concert the afternoon of May 17th for students and faculty, so please be sure your child wears a RED SHIRT and patriotic accessories that morning, too.

***IF YOUR CHILD IS PERFORMING, PLEASE HAVE THEM WORK HARD TO MEMORIZE ANY AND ALL PARTS THEY MAY BE A  LITTLE UNSURE OF . BEING IN FRONT OF A LARGE CROWD CAN BE A LITTLE NERVE RACKING, AND, BEING EXTRA EXTRA CONFIDENT/PREPARED ONLY HELPS!!
