A Heads Up on What to Expect

heads upDear Parents,
Thank you for your understanding and patience as we’re all scrambling to make the best of this situation.  We hope our classroom learning the next few days is flexible enough and will work for each family’s situation. Here is a quick overview of what to expect for your child’s online learning:

1) You should have received an email from Quest about picking up your student’s packet.  Several of the worksheets will be explained and are to be completed only when the teacher directs, but there’s also several “extra’s” that can be completed if your child has extra time (like during Spring Break!).  With that said, please don’t be alarmed by the volume.  We want to keep them engaged and learning but not overwhelmed! :)

2) Everything your child needs to work on for that day will be listed on our classroom BLOG each morning.  Many of the lessons will be pre-recorded by the 1st grade teachers and your child just has to click on the link provided and then complete the practice work listed.  Please have them work through the list of learning activities each day so they don’t get behind and help them wherever possible to navigate through the computer programs and this new process.  We will also attempt to “meet” online a couple times during the day with the whole class through a program called “Google Meet” (times will be listed on the blog). If your child isn’t able to meet at those times, we will record it and post it for them to watch later.  (We realize this is very sophisticated for 1st graders to do on their own, so don’t stress if they can’t meet with us “live” because there isn’t an adult available to help at that time…we just want to make an attempt to see and talk to them a couple times each day).

3) In order for your student to find us on “Google Meet” and get into some of their computer programs, they need to login using their Quest Google Account.  Login information is on their packet.  It will look like this: (first.last@qackids.org) and password (ex: tk347rams).
For a quick look at navigating through some of these programs click here: Finding Clever, iReady, Google Meet and Wonders. Your student will find my name not Tiehcert/Smith for both the Google Meet and  Wonders other than that it’s the same.

4) Please be patient with us as we work out any bugs :)

And most importantly, please don’t hesitate to email us at any time with questions.
We are going to miss being with our class, but hope your families all stay safe and healthy!
Thanks again,
Mrs. V

Electronic Device With WebCam Required For School Dismissal

Hello Parents,

By now you have heard Governor Herbert’s and our State Superintendent’s requirement for all schools to teach online for the next two weeks.  Your student will need access to the internet and an electronic device with a web cam.  I will be teaching via video conference.  Your student will need a forward facing camera to interact with our online class.  If you do not have a device with a webcam, Quest is happy to loan you a Google Chromebook for the next two weeks.  You may check-out a Chromebook when you pick up your student’s schoolwork.

**Please keep in mind that if you have multiple students at Quest they may be asked to sign into their virtual classrooms or their online activities at the same times during their school day.  We ask that you keep that in consideration as you are checking out your student’s laptops and picking up their packets. **

***Please send me an email ASAP if you will be needing a computer. Also be prepared to check our blog and your email several times a day for any current changes and information.

Stay tuned for more information.  We greatly appreciate our families being so flexible at this time.  We know this creates a hardship for parents – thank you for all you do.  You are amazing!

Otional Practice for March 16th-20th

**Please let me stress that this is optional practice for your student, not required.  We do ask for students to read 20+ minutes every day to develop their love for reading, increase fluency, vocabulary, and spelling .

Although we have optional reviews, we  STRONGLY encourage your children to read. Reading with and too your children, and reading as a family has shown to increase student vocabulary, spelling and fluency.  We have learned that the public library has a wonderful app to access amazing books online called Libby.
You can access the app information at this link:
Libby Link   By using your public library account, your students can log in and choose from thousands of books online for free to read to you, you to read to them, your family to read together, etc.  Audio books followed along also are a great source to develop this love for reading with your child as they follow along in the book.

1- Optional Math Practice

  • The family letter below provides review in math that you can do with your student.  Please read the letter and invite your child to share what they know about the concept by doing the activity together.
  • This is the standard we are working on this week: IMG_1643
  • This is the standard we worked on last week: Test will be on Monday, March 16th.IMG_7395
  • Language Arts this week:                                                                                                  Reading 20 minutes per day.  No need to submit minutes, but we strongly encourage you to make reading a priority. Reading comprehension strategyHelp your child read a story and then retell the events from the story in the correct order while they are focusing on the characters, setting, and events. As well as, making and confirming predictions.
2-FLUENCY PASSAGE FOR THE WEEK: Here is the example.  I hope you and your student will find the information interesting, as well as helpful in preparing for future fluency testing.
YOU DO NOT NEED TO RETURN THE FLUENCY PASSAGE.   It may take the entire 20 minutes to work through the passage on Monday. ALL the time your student spends on fluency counts toward their reading minutes.
IMG_7272
MONDAY:

1st- Using a yellow crayon or high lighter, have your student highlight each word in the passage they can read correctly without any help.
2nd- Go back through the passage and have a “Good MEATY Conversation” about the words they were unsure of or didn’t know. Talk about what strategies good readers can use to figure out the word. Here are a few suggestions…CVC if there is only one vowel, it USUALLY make the short vowel sound, CVCe-is there an /e/ at the end of the word that makes the first vowel say it’s name. Is there a vowel team that follows the rule…When vowel teams go a walking, the first one USUALLY does the talking  such as ee, ea, ai, oa, etc. Are there words within words like “ants” at the end of elephants…”and” in the word land…Go over the fact that they can skip the word and use the context of the sentence to help them figure out what the word is and if it makes sense.
3rd- Lastly, read the passage together,  then using the retell rope,  have your student tell you what they read in order of event of information.
TUESDAY – THURSDAY
*AGAIN* POINT OUT THE WORDS YOUR STUDENT KNOWS and then GO OVER THE ONES THAT ARE TRICKY.  Have them sound out words that follow “Regular Rules.” Time them for ONE, one minute timing each day to see how far they can read on their own. Their accuracy/fluency should increase each time they read the sentences.
WE are looking for how many words they are reading correctly out of how many they read and then what they can retell.
PLEASE use the Re-Tell Ropes below OR the one I sent home, whenever you are reading with your student checking for understanding.  THIS  HELPS STUDENTS PREPARE FOR OUR  LANGUAGE ARTS WORK AND DIBELS  TEST COMPREHENSION.
