QUEST ACADEMY CHARTER ELEMENTARY SCHOOL  DISCLOSURE DOCUMENT FOR MRS. FISHER’S 1st GRADE CLASS

Welcome to an exciting new school year! I am very excited to get to know you and your child. We will work closely together to ensure that your child progresses throughout the year. I sincerely believe that we can make this a great year for all of us. My goal is to help your child reach his/her ultimate potential in every subject.
CURRICULUM: We will be learning exciting new things together as we focus on the Utah State core Curriculum. All subjects are based upon the Utah State Core First Grade Basic Skills requirements. The curriculum includes ideas, concepts, and skills to provide a foundation for later learning. More information can be found at www.schools.utah.gov/curr/core .
CLASSROOM RULES: There are five basic rules in our classroom and school: 1. Silent Movement 2. Raise Hands 3. Self Start 4. Follow Directions 5. 12 Inch Whisper.
HOMEWORK: A great and successful first grade year is going to correlate with wonderful reading experiences. I will expect each student to read at least twenty minutes outside of the classroom, which I will record in the homework notebooks. I will send the homework notebooks with the students on Monday, which will be due back on Friday. I will expect the students to earn 50 homework points per week in addition to the reading assigned. There will be a menu with a selection for the students to choose how they want to earn their 50 points. HELP: I will be available to help your child if he/she is in need of further assistance on Tuesdays and Thursdays after school, and before school on Wednesdays. GRADING: Students will be assessed informally as well as formally. Tests are given on all days of the week. However, most spelling, vocabulary, and grammar tests are given on Fridays. We will also have a quarterly online test called, “Star Math” and “Star Reading.” The results of those tests will be provided at the parent-teacher conferences. Grades will be updated regularly for your review online. Please contact me or the office staff if you need assistance in accessing the online grades.
MAKE-UP WORK: If a test is missed, the student will receive a reasonable time period to make up the test with the teacher’s assistance. I will be reasonable and cordial regarding make up work. I intend to instill a sense of responsibility in all of my students.
REWARD AND DISCIPLINE SYSTEM: I will provide much positive reinforcement in many different forms, including praise, complements, and even goodies! If the whole class works together and follows the rules they will earn a gold coin. The coin gets put into a jar, and if the total amount of gold coins totals at least 100, then we will have a “Fabulously Fun Friday.” This is where I take the last twenty minutes of the day for free time and games. I also have color-coded centers (groups of four or five students). If they all work together respectfully I will tally their points throughout the day. Whichever group has the most tally marks will win for that day. The students will write their names on a piece of paper and put in the “Buck Bug jar.” I will pull out three names from the jar every Friday and they will have the opportunity to pick a prize from the prize box. Individually, the students can earn “U-cans” that will be used quarterly for purchasing items at the class auction. Further information will be given later on. I will also have rules that I will expect the children to follow. I will utilize a card-pulling chart system, which will have the colors of green, yellow, and red. Each child will have his/her own set of cards. Every child will start the day out with his/her card on green. If a rule is broken by the student, his/her card will be moved from green to yellow, which will be a warning. If the child breaks another rule, then I will move his/her card from yellow to red. When a student has their card moved to red, they are required to fill out a “Stop, Think, and Do” form, as well as have a talk with the teacher to help the child understand what was done wrong, and how he/she can improve. If another rule is broken after the card is on red, the student’s card will be pulled and you will be contacted. This way, I will have the opportunity to explain what has happened. If a student breaks another rule after the phone call, he/she will be referred to the office where an administrator will discuss appropriate discipline actions with him/her. If a serious rule is broken, such as fighting, or abusive behavior, he/she will immediately be sent to the office, and you will be contacted. If the student stays on green throughout the day, then he/she will receive a “U-can,” which can be used in the class auction later in the year, or to purchase classroom opportunities. For example, a student can purchase the opportunity to be in front of the line or to sit on the bean bag during story time or to sit at the teacher’s desk.
DONATIONS: In order to enrich your child’s educational experience, I ask for voluntary donations of supplies. Needed supplies are found on the school’s website. Additional donations for field trips may be requested later in the year, and I will give notification regarding field trips when they approach. Additionally, donation of your time is critical to the class. A sign-up sheet will be provided on back-to-school night.
BIRTHDAYS: If you would like to celebrate your child’s birthday by sending items to school, you may bring non-food items for all of the students (27) in the class to be distributed toward the end of the day. Summer birthdays will be celebrated in the last month of the school year (May).
