Homework

Homework will START September 8th, 2014. Between now and then please read with your child 20 minutes each night and return your child’s take home books/book to school everyday. Thank you.

HOMEWORK Instructions:
Weekly Word Study Homework
Print off the weekly WORD SORT sheet and your child’s spelling sort. Use it for the following activities:

Monday- WRITING SORT & SPELLING CITY
o Print, cut, and sort word cards with an adult and review this week’s rule. 
o Write GUIDE words at the top of each column.
o Some guide words have a C or V combination on them- C stands for consonant and V stands for vowel.
o READ a word card aloud.
o WRITE the word under the correct guide. REPEAT (read, write, repeat until all word cards are listed)
o Go on Spelling City and complete Spelling City assignment.

Tuesday- SPEED SORT & ABC ORDER
o READ quickly through the words.
o Speed Sort- Have someone TIME how long it takes you to SORT the words. Try to beat your time.
o Do it One more time. Try to beat your first time.
o Do ABC order with all of your words then write them on your homework paper.
o Write your High-Frequency words five times on your homework paper.

Wednesday- SPEED SORT & WRITING SENTENCE
o READ quickly through the words.
o Speed Sort- Have someone TIME how long it takes you to SORT the words. Try to beat your time. 
o Do it One more time. Try to beat your first time.
o Choose five words from your word sorts and write a complete Sentence.
o Draw a picture and write your high-frequency words around your picture. Use the space provided in your homework paper.

Thursday- GLUE SORT & CHALLENGE HOMEWORK!

o READ quickly through the words.
o On the BACK of Wednesday, fix and arrange sort (landscape or horizontal works best)
o Once correctly sorted and arranged so they fit, glue word cards to page. Use enough glue so the cards will stick and not fall off.
o Choose one Challenge Homework Activity from the Challenge Homework Menu. Have your child complete it then attach it to the the homework paper.
o Extra Credit (Optional): Do Spelling City Assignment. This will help your child review for the spelling test every Friday.

Note: If Homework Exceed 10-15 minutes any day (Monday – Thursday) please feel free to stop and sign anywhere on that day. I will count that a completed Homework. Example: Johnny is doing Homework on Monday and he’s taking forever. Mom or Dad signed on the Monday page.

Challenge Homework Menu: Please choose one Activity every Thursday. Also Please try to choose a different activity each week. Thank you

#1 TYPING TIDAL WAVE *Type all of your spelling words 3 times each on the computer. Use size 16 font. Print your work and staple or glue it into your Homework Notebook.


#2 RAINBOW FISH *
 Write each of your spelling words using “Rainbow colors” with 3 different colored pencils or crayons. Trace over each word 3 times in 3 different colors. You can do this right on your homework paper.

#3 SEAWEED SHAPES *Create word shapes with your spelling words. Go to this site and you can create a cool worksheet! After you complete it just print it out and attach it to your homework paper http://tools.atozteacherstuff.com/word-shapes/wordshapes.html


#4 RIDE THE WORDLE WAVE!!!! *
Go to Wordle.net and click the CREATE button. Enter your spelling words and see what you have created! Print it out and attach it to your homework paper! You can go wild with WORDLE!


#5 DO THE SQUID SCRIBBLE *Create a scribble with a black marker. Make sure you create enough spaces to fit all of your Spelling Words. Write a word in each section and then use your crayons to fill in each section for a colorful creations!

#6 Vocabulary Scuba * Use each vocabulary word to write a complete sentence.

#7 A Whale of a Vocabulary Story *Create a story using your vocabulary words for the week using your computer! (Microsoft Word)

#8 Fun Stingray Story Maker * http://learnenglishkids.britishcouncil.org/en/make-your-own/story-maker Create your own story using “story-maker”  :print it out and tape it to your homework paper.
