Tuesday-Speed Sort (See how fast you can sort)
Wednesday-No Peeking Sort (Have an adult tell you the word and write it down without looking at the word)
Thursday-Glue Sort (Glue down in the correct category)

Apple Witches!

We will be dressing our apple witches on Friday, October 14 at 9:00. I sent home a letter today with the students so please ask them about it. It has important information about our witch project. Also, please let me know if you are able to volunteer and/or sew witch dresses at home. The copier at school was broken so I couldn’t copy the pattern for the witch dress, it will be sent home with your child tomorrow but I at least wanted you to have the supply list today. Feel free to contact me with any questions. Thanks for your help with this!

Scholastic Book Orders

I sent book order forms home with the students today. If you would like to order, please do so online at  https://clubs2.scholastic.com before September 30.  Our classroom code is NKFMG. I love Scholastic because the books are reasonably priced and you can easily find books on third grade level. Every book ordered helps our class earn new books so thank you in advance for your support in this. Feel free to contact me with questions. They make WONDERFUL birthday and Christmas gifts. If you are buying the books as a gift, please let me know so I can email you when they arrive and not ruin the surprise!
Thanks again,
Mrs. Lloyd

Homework:
Quest homework policy is 10 minutes of homework is allowed times the grade your child is in school, plus 20 minutes of reading time.  With this in mind, your child should only be spending 30 minutes on math, and spelling, and then the 20 minutes of reading.  If it is taking your child longer than this to complete their homework, have them stop when their 30 minutes if over.

MATH

Play Prodigy 3 nights for at least 10 minutes. There is no need to turn anything in, I have a report to see if how long your child has been on. If you haven’t signed up, the directions are below.

Students are to get on to prodigy and link their accounts, if they already have one, or sign up, if you are new to Prodigy, and link them to my teacher account.
Step 1 – www.prodigygame.com/play
Step 2 – If you have never logged onto Prodigy, select New Student, and enter your class code: XRW2ZN
If you are already a member of prodigy, you need to link your account to me.  When you login, you should see a tab that says new teacher.  Click on that tab and enter the code XRW2ZN.  If you have issues, please let me know.
Step 3–  Create your character and start exploring.

READING
Read 20 minutes each night and turn in  Sort and Reading Log or the electronically http://qacblogs.org/nichol.lloyd/homework/reading/

SPELLING
Our class will be working on double f, double l, double t, & double s patterns this week. Please print off this sort: Blue Sort15
The students will use this sort to practice the indicated patterns. Quest has asked us to have the students type their spelling word sort each night, but I haven’t trained the students yet, so they are just sorting them this week. They will be expected to type them in the next few weeks.

Monday-Sort words by indicated patterns (Double f, Double l, Double S, Double T)
Tuesday-ABC Sort (Sort the words by initial letters.)
Wednesday- Speed Sort (Sort the words as quickly as they can.)
Thursday-Glue sort (Glue the words down in the indicated vowel pattern.)
**Please make a note on the Sort and Reading Log that a sort was done each night.**

Apple Witches are Done and Drying!

A HUGE thank you to all those parents who came in and helped with the apple witches! They turned out great and it will be so fun to watch them shrivel up these next few weeks! If you didn’t have the chance to come in this time and help, not to worry, there will be another volunteer opportunity in October to help dress the witches. More information to come.

If you have not had a chance to sign the disclosure, please do so ASAP.

I hope homework is going well.  Prodigy Game is a fabulous tool for math, but it does have the upgrade that the kids want to purchase and REALLY don’t need. Last year we were able to get a deal on the upgrade.  If this deal arises again, I’ll let you know.
This is how Prodigy Works:  I go in each week and assign them the topics we are working on, or the concepts they are struggling with.  When they complete these assignments, the computer adapts to what they need more practice in.  I am amazed at how many of them have completed over 100 questions in just one week.  I’m so IMPRESSED.  Also, I have been able to log into Prodigy on several different iPads, Notebooks, Tablets and computers.  If your child is having a problem with this, please have them click here:
Prodigygame and it should take them to the game.

Math Homework:
Play Prodigy 3 times this week for at least 15 minutes.

Reading Homework:
Read 20 minutes each night and turn in  Sort and Reading Log or the electronically http://qacblogs.org/nichol.lloyd/homework/reading/
I know life gets busy but please do not skip the reading. It is really the most important each night. Some ideas that I have used over the years is have an older child read to a younger child or read together as a family for 20 minutes and have everyone take turns reading.

Spelling Homework:
Spelling this year has changed.  We are using direct instruction to teach spelling and all the students in our class will have the same spelling pattern, with differentiation happening in our individual seat work time.  We will focus on the spelling patterns introduced and a set of sight words.  Eventually, the students will be required to type their spelling words in each week, but that won’t come for another week or two.  The directions for typing their sorts will be forthcoming (We’re just waiting for the program we will use to be ready to go)
