A great day at the Hogle Zoo!

Nov 28- Dec 2

5th-grade families,

I hope everyone had an amazing Thanksgiving break!! It’s hard to believe we are almost into December and in full swing of the holiday season.

Since our cold temperatures have arrived the large winter coats have arrived as well so please remember if your student doesn’t absolutely need a backpack we ask that they not bring one to school, we are so limited on space. Also as a friendly reminder, please have your students keep cell phones, Pokemon cards, other trading cards, games, and other items that can be a distraction at home.  Students are not allowed to bring those items to recess or to lunch so there is no need for them to carry them to school at all. Thank you so much for your help with this!

This week in math we are moving into fractions, and the time of the year when you may find your child asking for pizza more than normal since pizza is my go-to fraction. I bring it up at least 10 times a day… I’m even hungry by the end of the lesson!

As for ELA, we will be moving into Unit 3, week 1, and discussing what kinds of experiences can lead to new discoveries. Learning about open syllables and summarizing.

Remember we have our field trip this Thursday!

Have a great week and as always please message me with any concerns you may have.

 Thank you, Mrs. Robinson

This week in math we will be finishing our lesson on dividing by decimals as well as taking our first PRACTICE Rise Benchmark test. Please let me know if you have any questions about the practice benchmark. October 24-29

5th-grade families,

Our weather looks like it is quickly changing, please make sure your student is dressed warmly for those cold mornings!  Also, if they do not need to bring a backpack I would greatly appreciate it if they kept it at home, we are so limited on hanging space and when the winter coats come out our space gets even more limited. The library is on Thursday so that would probably be the only day a backpack might be needed. I am also noticing more and more toys being brought from home, and super heavy packed backpacks with toys, board games, crafts, and other fun items. Please encourage your student to keep these at home, I can’t be held responsible for them and they won’t be able to use them throughout the day, so it’s just unnecessary weight to carry around.

5th grade has been having some struggles during lunchtime, the issues include food being thrown and students mixing all of their food items together causing huge messes for the staff.  I will begin sending out messages today for students whose behavior is an issue in the lunchroom, so please talk with your student about your expectations during that time. Contact me with any questions.

A reminder for this week, Parent-teacher conferences are Wednesday and Thursday from 4-8pm, please note these are also early out days for students, with Friday being a day off for students. Please make sure you have reserved a time, I will be unable to see you if you pop in without making an appointment prior. I’m looking forward to meeting with you to talk about your amazing 5th grader!

I sent an email with the Halloween permission slip, please get that signed as soon as you have a moment.

As always, let me know if there is anything I can do or any questions you may have. See you this week and stay warm.

Thank you,

Mrs. Robinson

October 17-21

5th-grade families,

I hope everyone enjoyed their Fall break, I’m looking forward to hearing all the stories! I can’t thank my amazing 5th-grade families enough for the smooth evacuation drill last week, we did amazing! It isn’t easy for a group of 5th graders to sit in silence for what ended up being about 20 minutes, but my class was amazing! I mistakenly told them they were welcome to awkwardly stare at me the entire time and their little hearts accepted the challenge, we did make the best out of the situation, and having us finish that drill with smiles while still understanding the importance of that drill was a goal, we absolutely achieved.

As for this week, we are tackling 2 math lessons Lesson 10 has us adding decimals (2.314 + 1.652 = 3.966) and lesson 11 has us subtracting them (2.314 – 1.652 = 0.662) we will focus on lining up the decimals and just honing in on those adding and subtracting skills. For ELA we are answering the question “What does it take to put a plan into action?” and making predictions to help compare and contrast different elements of a story. Please see the attachment below for more information.

October 10-14

5th-grade families,

It’s FALL BREAK week! We will be off school Wednesday-Friday and I hope you enjoy every moment of this break and this absolutely beautiful fall weather we are having. Please remind your student, that I do expect them to continue reading for 20 minutes each day.

Also, before the break, we will be having our evacuation drill on Tuesday starting at 2:00pm and pickup times and the location are in the Google form I sent out earlier this week, I will attach it below in case anyone hasn’t had a chance to complete it yet.

Google form: https://forms.gle/Zaq5dPLVaN9UNySZA

This past Friday afternoon the Quest staff met with a member of the local police department to better prepare us for what to expect on Tuesday. We are taking our evacuation drill very serious however please know that your student’s mental health and well-being are always my top priority. It is my responsibility to make sure they understand how our procedures would go in the event we ever need to implement them, but it is absolutely not intended to ever scare or stress them in the slightest bit! If you have any concerns whatsoever please let me know.

**Also please be patient when you arrive at the alternate pickup location (church parking lot) to pick up your student, although we have made every attempt to prepare for a smooth pickup it has the potential for a few hiccups. So, please be kind to the staff we are trying our best to make sure we are doing what is best for your student.

As for the 2 days, we are in session this week, we will not be starting new lessons, but we will spend this time reviewing and catching up on any lessons that require some more time.

Thank you,

Mrs. Robinson

September 26-30

Families,

Welcome to another great week! Cookie Dough/Beef Jerky sales are wrapping up on Tuesday, and we are having a dollar dress down on Friday. Math this week is focused on understanding the “Powers of Ten” and for ELA we are reviewing and taking our first Unit assessment, the students aren’t to fear their first assessment at all as we take this one together as a group, so they can gain a clear understanding of the assessment and freely ask any and all questions they may have.

I do have to cancel tutoring just this week, my daughter fractured her ankle so I have to drop her off at the Q2 doors just after 8:00am which makes me late for tutoring and although I had some extremely understanding and patient students last week, I would rather just cancel this week and avoid keeping anyone waiting. We will plan to pick tutoring back up the following week. Thank you for understanding.
