September 5-10

Families,

I hope everyone had a great long weekend! I will begin Math tutoring this Thursday at 8:00am and will be inviting those students that need a little added assistance with last week’s lesson on the standard algorithms for multiplication, families can expect an email from me if your child would benefit. Also, if your students get their breakfast at Quest in the morning, they are welcome to bring it with them and eat it in the classroom during tutoring. This week our math focus is on dividing using long division.

In ELA we will be discussing how experiencing nature can change the way you feel about it. We will read narrative nonfiction stories, and discuss why it is essential to ask and answer questions as you are reading and how to identify cause and effect in text.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns you may have.

If you haven’t done so, please pay your $25 supply fee 

Thank you,

Mrs. Robinson

August 29-September 2

Families,

Yet another great week!

The standard algorithm for multiplication started a little challenging, but by the end of the week, I was watching your students help each other and get so excited about tackling this huge math power standard! Monday and Tuesday this week we will continue multiplying and switch into Lesson 5, dividing multi-digit numbers.

In ELA we discussed long vowels, the genre of realistic fiction, focusing on the importance of rereading the text, and completed stories about how hard work can help us to get the things that we need. This week we will continue realistic fiction and rereading but will include discussing short vowels and reading text about what can lead us to rethink an idea.

***Picture day is Tuesday, your student must be in uniform for this photo. I sent home a flyer on Friday, but if it didn’t make it feel free to click on the below link and complete your order online.

August 22-26

Families,

We had such a great first few days! I loved getting to know your student and I just know this is going to be a great year. This week we will complete our beginning of the year diagnostics and Dibels testing. Please send your student with a pair of headphones (they were not supplied, with the $25 supply fee) I had mentioned I prefer the earbuds because they are smaller and fit better in their desks, but their comfort is the most important! We wear them a lot and earbuds can be bothersome for some students. I want them as comfortable as possible. We will start our first math and ELA lessons this week, so please contact me if you have any questions or concerns.

If you haven’t done so, please pay your $25 supply fee.

Breakfast/lunch this year

Parents, please be made aware of the below items.

–School meals will no longer be free this year, parents wishing to apply for free/reduced meals can complete the application online through your parental Aspire account.  It is a super quick process, only taking a few minutes of your time.

–Breakfast will be served in the Q1 lunchroom same as last school year.  The price will be $0.40 for students that qualify for the reduced price and $1.50 for full-pay students.

–Lunch will cost $0.40 for students that qualify for the reduced price and $2.00 for all full-pay students K-9th grade.

–If your child has allergies, please be sure to contact Madeline Chestnut (Quest Kitchen Manager, mchestnut@questac.org) so she can make sure everything is documented and that her staff is aware of any allergies your child may have.

**This is a big one… because we will go back to scanning ID’s for breakfast/lunch students must have their ID badge when coming through the lunch line

–I will do everything in my power to make sure badges do not come home at the end of the day, but in the chance, that one makes it out the door your student must have it back at school the following day. If your child doesn’t have their badge we will have them contact you to bring it to school.

Please let me know if you have any questions at all and see you Monday at back-to-school night!

State Floats

Parents and students,

In celebration of the rich heritage and emblems of each state, fifth-grade students will design a model state float. Each student has been assigned a state and research will be done at school. The float should be decorated in a manner that reflects the state they are researching. Each model will be put on display at school and needs an index card that explains the details of the float. For example, a float of Florida might feature paper oranges, palm trees, alligators, and some state emblems. It should be creative, colorful, fun, and neatly done. Most importantly, it must be 3-dimensional. Many examples can be found online. The float must be COMPLETED AT HOME.

Our class will display their state floats on May 19th from 1:30 – 2:30. Parents are welcome to come!

To create a state float, follow the steps below:

  • Use a box. The float may not be bigger than 14 x 14 inches.
  • Completely cover the outside of the box (e.g. tissue paper, foil, colored rice that is glued on, construction paper, etc.)
  • Design the top part of the float using creativity and imagination. Think about what you have learned about your state’s national parks, motto, symbols, etc. Take some of these scenes, replicas, or figures that represent your state, placing them on the top in an appealing way.
  • Somewhere on the float, you must have the name of your state.
  • Your state float should resemble a real float in a parade. Think about the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day or Tournament of Roses parade floats.
  • Don’t forget your name!
  • Be creative, and have fun!
