Hello Team! Can you believe we are officially halfway through the year? I love to see how hard these students work and can’t wait for the adventures ahead of us! Remember, there is no school Monday, January 15th, for Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Hope you enjoy the long weekend!

This week, students will be completing their Middle of the Year (MOY) iReady Diagnostic Testing for math and ELA, their Acadience Testing for reading, and finishing their RISE Benchmark testing for science to see how they have improved from the first part of the year until now and to ensure they are being optimally challenged in their individual learning efforts. With this testing, the students will spend a bit more time on computers than normal, so if they use blue lens glasses they may want to bring them. I will make sure they get plenty of breaks but it will still be more screen time than usual. Students will also need a good working pair of headphones for this testing. Please check with your student to make sure theirs are still in working order, and if not, please furnish a new pair for them. We do not have any remaining class sets. It is important for all students to be at school on time and ready to rock! I can’t wait to see how they’ve grown already!

Two weeks from now are our Family-Teacher Conferences. If you haven’t done so yet, please sign up for a time that works best for your family here. These conferences will again be student led. I look forward to meeting with each of you and discussing their progress together!

As a reminder, I will be gone this Friday, January 19th through next Friday, January 26th, so there will be NO math tutoring this week or next week. I hope the students will show Mrs. Kearns how absolutely amazing they can be!

Next week, students will be learning how to add fractions with unlike denominators. In ELA, they will consider the question “what can you discover when you give things a second look?” In science, they will begin learning about the cycling of matter and food webs. Please encourage our awesome 5th graders to read at home, every night, for at least 20 minutes.

Thank you,
Mrs. Shaw

Hello everyone! What a great first week back! Remember, there is no school next Monday, January 15th, to observe Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

This week we will review what we have learned so far in science and begin RISE Benchmark Testing for this subject on Tuesday and Thursday afternoon. Again, just as a reminder, this testing is formative in nature, letting us know how students are progressing with their science knowledge, and is different from our end of year RISE testing. In ELA we will continue studying what people can do to bring about positive change and work on describing an author’s point of view by citing text evidence. In math, we will learn how to divide fractions.

Math Club (tutoring) will be held on Monday and Wednesday afternoon this week immediately following school until 3:35 pm. Also, just a reminder, I will be gone next Friday, January 19th – Friday, January 26th, so there will be no tutoring those weeks.

This is also the last week of the 2nd Quarter, and grades will be finalized by Friday evening. We will be performing Middle of the Year Testing next week. Please make sure your students are in attendance and have a working, reliable pair of headphones. Lastly, please sign up here for Family-Teacher Conferences for Wednesday, January 31st or Thursday, February 1st. These conferences are student-led, so please choose a time that works for both of you. This link will also be sent directly to you via email. Please contact me with any questions.

Thank you for your support!

Happy New Year!

I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday break! I have missed our 5th graders! I can’t wait to see them and hear all about their adventures!

We are jumping right back in to learning this week. In math we are multiplying fractions in word problems and learning about scaling, in ELA we are considering what people can do to bring about positive change, and finally, we are continuing our study of matter in science. We have just 9 school days left in this term. We are going to make the most of them and rock it!

Math Club (tutoring) will be held this Wednesday afternoon immediately following school until 3:35 pm.

Also, just so you are aware, I will be away Friday, January 19th – Friday, January 26th. The amazing Mrs. Kearns will substitute our class during that time! If you need anything while I am away, please contact the front office. If you send me a message, I will reply as soon as I return. I also look forward to meeting with you during Family-Teacher Conferences the following week. Sign-ups for those conferences will be sent via email and posted to the blog next week.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.

Thank you,

Mrs. Shaw

Hello everyone!

We are on the countdown to Christmas Break with lots of learning and fun on the way! A few items of business, please:

First, tutoring (a.k.a. math club) will only be held on Wednesday afternoon immediately following school this week. There will not be a Monday session. We will pick it back up after the break! Please remind your students to continue to read for 20 minutes per day during the break to get an awesome prize in January!

Friday is a PAJAMA day and we will be having our Christmas party then too! We will be playing games, watching the 2018 Grinch cartoon, eating popcorn, and drinking hot chocolate. Please sign the permission slip here if you haven’t yet. Friday is also an early out at 1:10 pm.

Please check the lost and found by Friday for any outerwear (box in the main foyer) and lost water bottles (in the lunchroom). Any items not claimed will be disposed of/donated over the break.

Lastly, your students are absolutely amazing and wonderful! I’m so grateful to be their teacher.

Thank you for all that you do! Happy Holidays!

-Mrs. Shaw

Hello Team! We’re going to have a great week! Just a few things:

If you haven’t yet had a chance, please sign the Christmas Party permission slip here.

Math Club (tutoring) this week and next week will only be held Wednesday after school until 3:35 pm. If your student has been invited to tutoring and is unable to attend, please let me know and I will be happy to provide resources for home.

Please remember that students should be reading for 20 minutes every night at home! If you would like any resources or support for reading at home, please let me know.

This week in ELA we are focusing on author’s craft and comparing 2 or more texts and how they are structured. We are exploring why different texts are written in different ways. In math, we are learning how to multiply fractions so that we are better prepared to work with measurements in the real world. Students can practice fraction skills by helping in the kitchen. In science we are continuing our study of properties of matter.

As always, please let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you,

Mrs. Shaw

November 27 – December 1, 2023

Hello Class Team,

Thank you again to the parent volunteers who helped with our class Halloween party! We had a lot of fun together and the class and I are so grateful for your support! We’re on the cusp of the most wonderful (and busiest) time of the year. Please mark your calendars for the following upcoming events:

  • Friday, November 17: Dollar Dress Down Day
  • Monday-Friday, November 20-24: Thanksgiving Break – No School
  • Saturday, December 2: Reindeer Run and Breakfast with the Grinch (see below for registration information)
  • Friday, December 15: Happy Holidays Party
  • December 18-January 1: Winter Break – No School

Please remember that students should be reading for 20 minutes every night at home! Even better if they read aloud with a grown up.

Math tutoring will be held Monday and Wednesday after school until 3:40 pm this week. For additional practice at home, please consider having your student practice their multiplication facts on Reflex and work towards mastery on the standard-specific weekly IXL lessons posted to our Google classroom under “math.”

This week in class we will be reviewing everything we have learned so far this year in math, including all decimal operations, powers of 10, and long division and multi-digit multiplication using the standard algorithm. We will also be taking our first Rise Benchmark test. This test is formative in nature and is in preparation for the summative testing we will complete at the end of the school year. In science, we are learning about properties of matter. In ELA, we will be practicing summarizing and determining the theme of a text while asking what we can learn from different cultures. Please let me know if you have any questions about the benchmark testing or any other class happenings.

Thank you always for your support. Have a Happy Thanksgiving!
