Spring Picture Day!

Spring pictures will be taken during school on Friday, March 28th. Students will be allowed to dress down for these photos while maintaining dress code standards. Only students who have pre-ordered photos will be photographed. Orders are due by March 27th. Please note that there will not be a retake day for these photos. If you are interested, please fill out this FORM below. Thank you!

Hello Team,

This week is FIELD TRIP WEEK! We are all so excited for this awesome opportunity! If you haven’t done so yet, please be sure to review all of the information and sign the permission slip here as soon as possible for your child to attend our field trip this Wednesday, March 5th, to the Natural History Museum of Utah. We are asking for a donation of $5 per student and $10 per chaperone (if selected in the lottery) for this field trip. Please pay the front office as soon as possible. Thank you for your support!

For the next two weeks in math we will be learning how to convert measurements–within both the standard and the metric system. To be proactive with this standard, we are asking that students practice IXL for 15-20 minutes at home each night in 5th grade lessons II and JJ 1-5. In ELA, we will work on making predictions as we compare characters, settings, and events. We will be reading historical fiction based in the Great Depression time period. In science, we will be studying how animals obtain energy and matter from the food they eat for body repair, growth, and motion and to maintain body warmth.

Please remind your students to read for 20 minutes at home each night! It adds up!

Hello Everyone,

If you haven’t done so yet, please be sure to review all of the information and sign the permission slip here as soon as possible for your child to attend our field trip next Wednesday, March 5th, to the Natural History Museum of Utah. If you indicated your interest in serving as a chaperone for this field trip, we will notify you if you are selected in the next couple of days. Please note, we are asking for a donation of $5 per student and $10 per chaperone (if selected in the lottery) for this field trip. That donation may be paid to the front office. Thank you for your support!

Also, our class reward of an electronics party will be this Friday, February 28th. Again, if you haven’t done so yet, please review the permission slip here for that party with your child and sign as soon as possible. Please let me know if you have any questions!

This week in math we will be reviewing all fraction operations–adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing, and taking RISE benchmark tests for these standards in preparation for end of year testing. This is hard work, and any extra time that can be spent practicing these skills at home for 20 minutes per day is greatly appreciated! In ELA, we will continue to work on identifying a main idea and key details in a text and evaluating text structure as we study the progression of scientific knowledge over time. In science, we will learn about what plants eat and the importance of the Sun for food webs on Earth.

As always, please encourage your student to read for 20 minutes at home!

2/17 – 2/21/25

Hello Families,

Remember there will be no school Monday, February 17th, for President’s Day. We have two exciting announcements with two accompanying permission forms!

First, we are looking forward to an awesome field trip to the Natural History Museum of Utah on Wednesday, March 5th. Please be sure to review all of the information and sign the permission slip here for your child as soon as possible. We are also asking for parent volunteers to help chaperone this field trip (as indicated on the permission slip). Space is limited, so we will draw names from a lottery and notify you if you are selected. We ask that you complete the form by this coming Wednesday, February 19th. Please note, we are asking for a donation of $5 per student and $10 per chaperone (if selected in the lottery) for this field trip. 

Next, our class has worked incredibly hard to pass off over 200 iReady lessons in just 3 weeks (wow!) to earn their chosen reward of a class electronics party on Friday, February 28th. Please review the permission slip here for that party with your child. Thank you for your support with these two fun events! Please let me know if you have any questions.

When we return to school Tuesday, we will be working on adding and subtracting decimals and fractions with unlike denominators in story problems. Finding a common denominator and carrying out these equations can be tricky and I’m proud of the hard work our class has done and will keep doing together! In ELA, we will consider the question, “How can scientific knowledge change over time?” as we work on identifying a main idea and key details in a text. For science, we will begin learning about the cycling of matter, focusing on producers and consumers within food chains. It will be a great week of learning!

At home, please remember those magical 20 minutes of reading every day at home to continue to build their brain! Also, if we discussed additional practice or make-up work for math, please have your child aim for 20 minutes/day! Thank you for your support.

Valentine Friend-Grams

This week students have the chance to surprise someone in the school with a fun token of friendship. Students may purchase cute Valentine cards that will be attached to a small treat and delivered to their friends’ classes on Valentine’s Day (Friday, February 14). Hello Team!

We are looking forward to celebrating Valentine’s Day on Friday! If you haven’t done so yet, please sign the permission form here as soon as possible! Just as a reminder, if your child chooses to bring valentines to exchange (totally optional), please make sure they bring enough to share with all 28 students in the class. The valentines may be either non-food items or prepackaged store-bought treats. These treats will be sent home with students. They will not be eaten in class. Please do not have your child write who the valentines are to, just who they are from, in an effort to save time.  Students may bring a Valentine’s box or I will have a small bag for them to collect gifts/treats.

This week in math we will be working on subtracting fractions with unlike denominators. Tutoring will be held by invitation only, but 15-20 minutes of at home IXL practice is welcome and encouraged. In ELA, we will consider the question, “How do you express something that is important to you?” as we study poetry, figurative language, and analyze a poet’s word choice. We will also finish up our study of matter in science, as well as complete RISE benchmark testing for this standard. We are looking forward to a fun in-school field trip on Monday the 10th as a culminating activity for this standard.

Remember there will be no school next Monday, February 17th, for President’s Day.

Please don’t forget to encourage students to read 20 minutes each night!

Dear Team,

It was wonderful to see and meet with many of you this past week! Thank you for all you do to support your child and our awesome class community!

This week we will be learning how to add fractions with unlike denominators in math. Every day through the end of the year, we will also be reviewing all of the standards we have already learned this year. In ELA, we will be completing our study of an author’s perspective within a text and analyzing its effect on how events are described. In science, we are winding down our study of the conservation of matter.

We are going to be working hard and challenging ourselves the next few weeks as we level up and prepare for 6th grade! Thank you for your support at home for your student with the goals we discussed at conferences in reading and math!

Please also be sure to sign our Class Valentine’s Permission slip here. I look forward to celebrating with them!

This week, we are finishing our math standard on dividing fractions. Students are working hard to determine which number in a story problem is the number being cut up, split up or divided, and into how many groups v. the size of those groups. They are also learning about the reciprocal nature of multiplication and division with regards to fractions. Tutoring for this subject will be held next week by invitation only.

In ELA we are going to be studying character perspective and point of view in a story, while visualizing what is happening in the story as we read. We will be considering the question, “What can you discover when you give things a second look?” and have some fun reading plays.

Finally, in science, we are learning about the conservation of matter, or in other words, the amount of matter stays the same, even when matter changes form.

In the coming weeks, we will be reviewing all the things we have learned so far this year. We will also begin practicing for the state RISE assessments by taking benchmark tests in all subjects. As you can see, students are learning and growing a lot. Please let me know if you have any questions!
