1/21 – 1/24/25

Hello families,

The past few weeks have been a whirlwind! If you haven’t done so yet, please sign up here for Family-Teacher Conferences next Wednesday, January 29th or Thursday, January 30th. This link was also sent directly to you via email. I look forward to meeting with you and discussing your student’s progress together! Remember there is no school Monday, January 20th, in observation of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

This week, we are starting to learn about dividing fractions in math. In ELA we are going to be testing our ability to draw inferences about a text, and finding evidence in the text to support those inferences. We will be reading about people who effectuated positive change, including Harriet Tubman, Frederick Douglass, and Rosa Parks. Finally, in science, we are learning about the difference between chemical and physical changes of matter.

As always, please let me know if you have any questions.

Warmly,
Mrs. Shaw

1/13 – 1/17/25

Hello everyone! What a great first week back! Remember, there is no school next Monday, January 20th, to observe Inauguration Day and Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

This week we will finish up our Middle of the Year testing as well as resume our regular curriculum. In math we are multiplying fractions in word problems and learning about scaling, in ELA we are considering what people can do to bring about positive change, and finally, we are continuing our study of matter in science.

This is also the last week of the 2nd Quarter, and grades will be finalized by this Friday evening. Lastly, please sign up here for Family-Teacher Conferences for Wednesday, January 29th or Thursday, January 30th. This link will also be sent directly to you via email. Please contact me with any questions.

Thank you for your support!

Hello everyone!

We are on the countdown to Winter Break with learning and fun on the way!

This Thursday and Friday, Dec 19th and 20th, are free Pajama or Christmas Sweater days. Friday will also be our class Christmas party. We will be doing a fun little service project, playing games, watching the 2018 Grinch cartoon (rated PG), eating popcorn, and drinking hot chocolate.

If you haven’t done so yet, please sign the permission slip here so your student can participate. I will not need any volunteers this day.

Students are welcome to bring a small pillow, blanket, and stuffed animal to use during the movie. They may also bring their own treat (healthy or sweet) and closable drink from home, but they may not share these items with other students.

Remember, Dec 23rd – Jan 3rd is Winter Break and there will be no school. Please make sure your child is reading 20 minutes everyday over the break! See you back on Jan 6th!

Lastly, your students are absolutely amazing and wonderful! I’m so grateful to be their teacher. Thank you for all that you do! Happy Holidays!

Love, Mrs. Shaw

12/1 – 12/6 and 12/9 – 12/13/24

Welcome back team! Hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving Break! We have a busy and fun 3 weeks ahead…starting with our field trip to the orthodontist’s office Monday, December 2nd! Please make sure your student is dressed appropriately for the weather!

With our field trip, we will begin a new science standard, studying properties of matter, and looking first at the particle nature of matter. We will work with this standard into February.

In ELA we are asking the question, “What benefits come from people working as a group?” as we evaluate and compare text structures and work to determine the main idea and key details of a text.

In math, we are switching gears and learning about fractions. First, we will learn how fractions represent division problems. Next week we will begin learning how to multiply by a fraction. At home practice with decimal operations, especially division, would still be very beneficial. I recommend 5th grade IXL Lesson FF8 to reinforce that skill. Math tutoring will continue by invitation only. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Please remember that students should be reading for 20 minutes every night at home! Thank you for your support!

Other Important Dates:

  • Dec 2nd – Field Trip
  • Dec 2nd – Choir Performance @ West Haven Tree Lighting (6PM)
  • Dec 3rd to 6th – Paper Pie Book Fair (8-9 AM & 2-4PM)
  • Dec 4th – Choir Performance @ Ogden Amphitheater (6PM)
  • Dec 6th – Dollar Dress Down Day
  • Dec 7th – Breakfast with the Grinch. Tickets may be purchased here
  • Dec 20th – Class Christmas Party. Please sign the permission slip here.
  • Dec 23 – Jan 3: Winter Break- No School

11/11 – 11/15 and 11/18 – 11/22/24

Hello Fifth Grade Families,

Happy Veteran’s Day! Thank you to all those who have served our country! We are grateful for your sacrifice and courage!

This week in math we are learning how to multiply decimals so we can work with money and measurements. Next week we will learn how to divide decimals. Please challenge your students to show you what they are learning with decimal operations at home! Tutoring will be held by invitation only for those students who could use a little extra practice and direction.

In ELA, we will be continuing determining the theme of a text, this time within realistic fiction, again drawing on specific details and summarizing the text. We will test on this standard next week! In science, we will be completing our study of the characteristics and interactions of Earth’s Systems with a special in-school field trip. We will also be RISE benchmark testing for this standard.

This Friday, November 15th, is a special bonus dress down day (not prepaid) to support one of our Quest families in need. If your child would like to participate, please have them bring a dollar! Thank you !

Next Friday, November 22nd, is a regular dollar dress down day (either prepaid or bring a dollar to participate). There is no school the following week, November 25-29th, for Thanksgiving Break. Hope you enjoy the time together!

Please make sure your child is reading at home every day! This practice is key to their growth: 20 minutes is the goal!

Thank you always for your support,

Mrs. Shaw
