Hello Families,

Thank you for all of your support with our school cookie dough and beef jerky fundraiser! Monday is the last day to rally; Tuesday all orders and money are due.

Also, please note that this Tuesday, September 26th, is Picture Day. This picture will be used for the yearbook and students’ name badges, so they will need to wear their school uniform.

I will continue math tutoring by invitation only this Monday and Wednesday immediately following school until 3:35 pm. We will be continuing our work on multi-digit multiplication and long division skills for those who need the extra support. You will receive an email from me if your student would benefit from this extra time.

This week in math, we are learning how to read and write decimals in standard, word, and expanded forms. In ELA, we are practicing rereading to compare text structures, with a special focus on problem and solution. In science, we will be learning about weathering and erosion.

Lastly, this Friday will be a Dollar Dress Down. We’re going to have a great week!

Math tutoring will be held again by invitation Monday and Wednesday after school until 3:35 pm. We are continuing our practice of multi-digit multiplication and long division. You should have received an email from me if your student would benefit from this extra small group practice.

Also, please mark your calendar for Picture Day on September 26th. Forms for ordering pictures were sent home on Friday. Students must be in uniform for this photo, as it will go on their badge and in the yearbook. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Hello Families,

Our class is working hard to gain new skills and be great teammates. I love to see them help and cheer for one another! This week in math especially, they learned they can do hard things as they engaged in challenging operations. I am so grateful to teach and learn with them!

I will begin math tutoring by invitation Monday and Wednesday afternoon immediately after school until 3:35 pm. We will be practicing using the standard algorithm for multiplication and long division. You will receive an email invitation from me if your student would benefit from a little extra help.

This week in math, we will be learning all about place value in preparation for operations with decimals. Students will learn that for both whole numbers and decimals, a digit in one place not only has ten times the value it would have in the place to its right but also has one-tenth the value it would have in the place its left. This means we will be using the multiplication and division skills we have been learning the past few weeks to expand our knowledge of numbers. In ELA, we will continue to focus on rereading to compare characters, settings, and events in a story, drawing on specific details in the text. In science, we will be investigating the distribution of water on Earth. At home, please encourage students to read for 20 minutes every night!

I hope everyone had a great long weekend! We’re jumping right back in!

This week in math we are continuing our focus on using the standard algorithm for long division. We will also incorporate using the standard algorithm for multiplication. In ELA, we will be discussing how people get the things they need. We will be reading realistic fiction, and discussing why rereading is an important strategy for comparing characters, settings, and events in a story, drawing on specific details in the text. Our work in science will focus on earth’s systems and layers.

I will begin math tutoring *by invitation only* next week. Tutoring will be held Monday and Wednesday afternoons from 3:15-3:35 pm. If tutoring would be beneficial for your child you will receive an email from me.

What a great week! Our class TEAM is kind and hard working. I am loving getting to know them and their individual strengths and personalities.

In math, the standard algorithm for multiplication started a little challenging, but by the end of the week, I could see your children helping one another and tackling this huge math power standard! Monday and Tuesday of this week we will continue multiplying and then switch into Lesson 5, dividing multi-digit numbers.

In ELA this week we will be learning about long vowels and finding cause and effect in a text by asking and answering questions before, during, and after reading. We will be considering the question, “How does experiencing nature change the way you feel about it?” I have challenged each of them to spend some time in nature enjoying the sunshine and fresh air and reflecting on this question.

As a reminder-If you haven’t done so, please pay $30 for your student’s supplies in the office or online at Quest Payments. Please mark “Shaw Supplies” when doing so.

Fifth-Grade Families,

It has been wonderful getting to know your children a little better and see our class team come together. It’s going to be a great year!

A reminder that this Thursday, August 24th, is early out at 1:10 pm. Also, there is no school Friday, August 25th.

Assembling our class promise was a highlight this week. Everyone had a chance to contribute, and their responses were thoughtful and meaningful. We talked about how just like the rings of a tree tell its story, we get to determine our rate of growth and our story for this year. A signed copy of this class promise will be on display in our classroom.

This week, we will complete our beginning of the year iReady diagnostics and Acadience Reading testing. We are also jumping right into our 5th grade curriculum!

In ELA, we will be asking and answering questions while we read to determine the author’s perspective. In math, we will be multiplying multi-digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm.

If you haven’t done so yet, please pay your $30 supply donation here as soon as possible: Online Payments, marking “Other” and typing “Shaw Supplies.” You may also pay in the Q1 office.

Hello soon to be 5th graders! I hope you are having an awesome summer! I am excited to meet you and learn together!

Please mark your calendars for Back to School Night on Monday, August 14th, from 6-8 pm. Presentations will be given every 30 minutes starting at 6:00 pm, with the final session beginning at 7:30 pm. Our classroom is in the south hallway, the second to last door on the right, Room 155.

The First Day of School is Wednesday, August 16th. The first three days are early out days with dismissal at 1:10 pm.

Here are a couple of things you can do now to prepare:

1. Please subscribe to my blog by clicking on the icon to the right and inputting your email address.
2. Grown-ups and students, please read through the Class Disclosure together and sign the form Class Disclosure Signatures .
3. Please complete this short Family Survey to help me get to know your student better.
4. Please complete this blanket Food Permission Form for the entire school year.
5. Instead of purchasing school supplies, please pay a donation of $30 here: Online Payments,  marking “Other” and typing “Shaw Supplies.” You can also pay in the Q1 Office. Please do so on or before Back to School Night and I will take care of all the shopping, labeling, and organizing of class supplies. To see what your $30.00 will cover, please click on the class supply list under the Family Information tab above.

Additionally, students will need to bring the following items on the first day of school:

• Headphones or earbuds–labeled with the student’s name. Parents will be responsible to replace broken or damaged headphones/earbuds throughout the year. We use headphones multiple times every day, throughout the day in the classroom. Please try to find the highest-quality headphones possible. 
• Water bottle–Student may bring a small water bottle that they can have with them throughout the day.
• Small bag if needed–Only small bags are allowed for personal items if needed. Please, no large backpacks. They are not necessary. We are a technology school so we don’t send papers home often and classroom storage space is limited.

Additional donations for field trips and class parties may be requested as their respective dates approach.

Students can prepare for 5th grade by reading for 20 minutes every day, and practicing their multiplication and division math facts. Most of all, I hope you can get outside and have some fun!

Here we are! Can you believe it?

Please sign this end of year activities waiver for your student today! 

Our tentative schedule this week will be:

Make It Monday- 5th grade Memory Book, puzzles, team games, solar oven s’mores

We’ve Got Talent Tuesday- Special Guest Speaker Miss Weber County Savannah Lyle (4th and 5th grade combined assembly), Class Talent Show/Show & Tell- if your student would like to participate, please have them plan on sharing for 3-5 minutes. They may show a video of their talent (please email to me) or perform live (this could include singing, dancing, playing an instrument, their cheer routine, a soccer drill, solving a Rubix cube, Tae Kwon Do, a piece of art they created, a magic trick, a stand up comedy routine, teaching the class how to fold origami, etc.). Alternatively, they could share something special to them. Please keep in mind when helping them decide which talent/special item to share that this will take place just with our class and just in our classroom…it’s meant to be informal, fun, and a chance for them to celebrate one another.

Wacky Wednesday- Clean the classroom, cardio drumming, dance party with our class DJ, bounce houses, and popsicles

Thoughtful Thursday- School Talent Show 10-11 am, board games, thank you cards, EARLY OUT

Finally Friday- Yearbook Day, karaoke, EARLY OUT

What a joy it has been to be a part of your team and to get to know these absolutely amazing humans! I am so proud of each and every one of them and so very grateful for the privilege of being their 5th grade teacher. I can’t wait to see what they conquer next!

Hello Families,

Our 5th grade students have chosen a state to research and give a short presentation about in class. Research for these state reports will be done in class.

In conjunction with this research, students have also been invited to create a float for their state at home. Floats are optional, but a lot of fun! They need not be time consuming or extravagant and should be student-led in creation. The more student creativity and ownership for this project, the better! Reports will be due Monday, May 15th, and state floats, if your student chooses to make one, will be brought to school and displayed the morning of Friday, May 19th in the Q1 gym from 9-10:30 am. You are welcome to come and tour all of the state floats that morning!

If your student elects to create a float at home, here are a few instructions to help get started:

• Use a box. The float may not be bigger than 14 x 14 inches.
• Completely cover the outside of the box (e.g. tissue paper, foil, colored rice that is glued on, construction paper, etc.)
• Decorate the float to reflect the state you are researching. Use your creativity and imagination. Think about what you have learned about your state’s national parks, motto, symbols, etc., and include those details on top of your float. For example, a float of Florida might feature paper oranges, palm trees, alligators, and some state emblems.
• Somewhere on the float, you must have the name of your state.
• Your state float should resemble a real float in a parade. Think about the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day or Tournament of Roses parade floats. It should be 3-dimensional, colorful, fun, and neatly done. Many examples can be found online, but there are a few examples below, too.
• Don’t forget your name!
• Have fun!
