VALENTINE EXCHANGE: We will exchange valentines on Friday, Feb. 14 from 12-1:00. If you child chooses to participate, please make sure they bring enough Valentines for every student. Please do not have your child write who the cards are to, just who they are from. We have 26 students in our class. Students can decorate a Valentine box, or something similar, to bring in on that day. The opening on the box should be about a 3×5 or 4×6 size. Please do not bring it any sooner than the 14th. I will have a bag for students who do not bring a box from home. Students are able to hand out small, prepackaged treats. These treats will be sent home with students and are not to be eaten in class. Students will need a permission form filled out by parents to receive treats from their classmates. We will also be having a sugar cookie with frosting and conversation hearts. The permission for this was signed at the beginning of the year. Please let me know if anything has changed.
Reading in Class: We are reading realistic fiction and learning how to compare and contrast events. We will have a test on Thursday. In phonics, we are learning about r-controlled vowels (er, ir, or, ur). See the list below for examples.

Math in Class: We are using the strategies we have learned to add and subtract 3-digit numbers with regrouping. Have your child show you their favorite strategy. Then practice a new one (base ten, expanded form, number line, or all totals). We moved the test to Thursday, Jan. 30.

Reading Passages (optional, but highly encouraged!!): Stories go home each Friday. Encourage your child to read them to you (3 times), sign it, and send it back with them. They get class money for this!
**Please read with your child. Make it enjoyable and fun. You can even read to them and then ask them questions!! 20 minutes a day is a great goal. Your child should be bringing home decodables each Friday in their black folders. These stories can be read and returned for class money. If they read them 3 times out loud with you, please sign it and have them bring it back. It is so important to read every day and ask fact finding questions from the story to develop your student’s comprehension; this is key to meeting the end of the year benchmark goals for 2nd grade.
