What’s up with this Hugo talk?

Remember that book I showed you at the beginning of the year?- The Invention of Hugo Cabret? It is now a major motion picture! I know that many of you are reading it and many more of you want to read it so I inserted this little video from Scholastic! They interview the author and several of the actors. I hope you enjoy it!

Remember the Traditional Literature Assignment—

It is due by Thursday Dec. 15th. You can hand it in ahead of time but you will lose points if you hand it in late!

The outline and requirements are all right here on the blog so don’t wait until the last minute – sit down and get it DONE!!

I am excited to see all of your creative work!

Traditional Literature Project

After weeks and weeks of reading, listening to and exploring the various forms of Traditional Literature it is time to compile all of our information and share! Every student created a Jigsaw Book with the cover completed and the mythology pocket attached to the back page. Just go through the following steps and complete the other pages. 1. Take all of your supplies home with you –
  • the Jigsaw Book
  • your outline pages you created in class to show what to include in each section
  • your Traditional Literature Reading List
2. Work through each section – remember that neatness counts and correct spelling is a must! Section 1 – defining terms

outline copy of section 1 - transfer to Jigsaw Book

You should have your outline copy of all the information you need for this section. Check your spelling, decide on your”font style” and transfer the information into you Jigsaw Book. Section #2- Your focus area. Each student identified the focus area of Traditional Literature that they wanted to concentrate on and represent in this middle section. Follow your outline to complete each section. Here is the sample guide we used in class to help us build our own outlines. Remember – you need to include at least 4 stories or tales in this section. Use your reading list to help you recall the titles and spelling. The final section of the book is already half way done! Now show that you have read from the other 3 areas – tell about one story from each area. One the final page – slide your mythology cards into the pocket and decorate the page. Your cards should be ready to go since we completed this assignment last month! Just as a reminder – there are 12 cards – each one highlights a different god or goddess from Greek Mythology with a drawing and an explanation. The gods and goddesses included are- Zeus         Hera        Hermes     Athena       Apollo   Ares        Eros            Demeter          Dionysus      Hades      Poseidon      Aphrodite

Book Orders Due on Monday!

I just wanted to send out a reminder about the Scholastic Book Orders for this month. THE DEADLINE IS MONDAY NIGHT!!!

Order online or bring your order form to class! Make all checks out to Scholastic Books! Our Class code is Gqm6f-

Some of our students have been very excited about The Invention of Hugo Cabret and now the hardback book is available. There is even a package with Hugo and Selznik’s newest book Wonderstruck! Check in the December issues of Arrow and Tab for these titles! Since we have been reading and learning about ancient civilizations and mythology the class has really been interested in reading some of the great books about mythology and legends. The entire set of Percy Jackson and the Olympians is available in the Arrow November Book Club. It is one of the favorite series in 6th grade. The newest addition to mythology and adventure is the series by Rick Riordan (author of Percy Jackson) and the kids can’t get enough of it! The first book is The Lost Hero and book #2 is The Son of Neptune.       And of course there is the very popular The Red Pyramid and its companion book The Throne of Fire. My copy is just about worn out with all the use it has had in the last month!!!! Look in the Club Shop for these titles. A great non-fiction book that dives into ancient Egypt in the December Arrow is this great title — For some light-hearted reading the class loves the Wimpy Kid books. The newest book – Cabin Fever is in the November Tab and Arrow Book Clubs.

HAPPY READING!
