Our class was visited by the Bee Man!

We were very lucky to be visited by Mrs. Cashin’s father today. He has his own bee hives and was very excited to show the bees to us! We saw lots of bees and even learned something we didn’t know. Ask your child what they learned today!

Words Their Way Hints

Here are some ways to work with the word sorts that come home each week.
  1. There will be directions on the header page that tells you what kinds of sorts the kids can do with their word cards. For example, they may be able to sort the words by vowel sound, beginning or ending sounds, or beginning and ending blends.  Sometimes students can sort their words in three or more different ways.
  2. Decide upon a way for your child to sort his/her cards.  Put those headers at the top of an open area (he/she will need some room to work).
  3. Let your child sort the word cards.  If he/she makes a mistake, don’t correct it right away.  You’ll have time to do that later.
  4. When your child is finished, go through each column and make sure he/she can pronounce each word and confirm that the word “fits” underneath the header.  This is the time to help them correct any mistakes.
  5. When finished, mix up the cards again and do a different sort if possible.
    1. If you can only do one type of sort, then try something called a “speed sort”.  Time how long it takes them to do the sort and see if he/she can beat the time.  They LOVE this!
  6. It is extremely important that your child can pronounce each word. Keep reviewing this if you find it is a little difficult.  They should know the meanings of the words as well.
  7. Each week I will try to send home a different type of sort that your child can do.

Homework for the week of August 26, 2013

Hello Parents!

I just posted the Homework for next week on our blog.  Please print out both the Weekly Homework Sheet and the Math Sheet.  Both of these will be due on Friday, August 30.  Each Friday your child will bring home their Red Homework Folder.  In the folder will be all graded work from the previous week, as well as any school handouts.  You will also find an index card of 5 High Frequency Words that your child needs to learn to spell and their Words Their Way spelling sheet.  Please look for these in the Red folder on Friday.  The Red folder needs to be returned on the following Friday with the homework in it.  Our class uses Class Dojo to assign points for various activities.  One activity the students receive points for is returning their homework on time.  Thank you so much for your time on this 🙂

Yearbooks/Field Day

Yearbooks will be handed out tomorrow, Friday, May 24.  There will be a yearbook signing from 8:45-9:45 on Friday.  If your child WILL NOT BE HERE on Friday, you may pick up the yearbook that your child ordered after school on Thursday.  Only parents/guardians will be allowed to pick them up. If your child will be here on Tuesday, May 28th make sure they bring a home lunch that does not need to be reheated.  It is a dress down day but school rules as to what’s acceptable still apply. I have loved having your child in my class.  Each and every one of them is very special to me.  We have laughed and cried together and had amazing adventures!  Keep reading with your child over the summer break!
