Field Trip

Good morning!
We are keeping an eye on the weather for tomorrow’s field trip. We will not know if we have to reschedule it until tomorrow morning. As soon as I know I will send out an email.
If the trip is on, please have your child in uniform (with a red polo) and write their names on their lunches. The following students are the only ones who have requested a school lunch.
Kiyah, Cham, Caleb, Titan, Steven, Catelynn, and Paisley. Everyone else needs to make sure to bring a lunch from home.

Math Homework

Oops..I forgot to add that your child will be bringing home a math homework Monday-Thrsday.  It does need to be returned the following day.  So your child should be doing 20 minutes of reading and the math worksheet every day,  The Reading log can be returned on Friday but I need the math returned daily so I can make sure that everyone is ready for the test on Friday.

Thanks!

This week in class..

Good afternoon! We will be having a very busy week this week so I wanted to give you a heads up.
1. Our field trip is on Thursday, 10/4 and we will be going to the pumpkin patch (Green Acres). Don’t forget to pay your $7 to the office. Also, unless you have told me otherwise, make sure your child brings a lunch with nothing that has to be heated and no sodas. Please put their name on their lunch to avoid any confusion. Also, they need to wear a red school polo. If it is raining, Green Acres may ask us to reschedule and I will let you know if that happens. Keep your fingers crossed because they are forecasting a lot of rain this week.
2. Your child has been placed in reading groups. I will be starting their groups Monday. Some will read with me every day and others only twice a week depending on their reading ability. The groups are fluid which means as they improve in Reading, they will move to new groups.
3. This week in class we are working on two-part word problems in math, writing personal narratives, blending words with short i and long i, expanding and combining sentences, and key details. We will also start our animal unit this month.
4. Congratulations to Titan and Aalijah who looked on my blog and brought in pictures of 3 instruments we have never heard of in this country! They will be getting their prizes on Monday. Look soon for a new challenge on my blog.
5. The class is starting to get letters back from the people they wrote to. They are very excited and they can’t wait to open them! So far, Paityn and Courtney have received a letter back.
If you have any questions, please let me know!

Class Challenge

Ms. Stephanie read us a book today about a Didgeridoo.  Your challenge is to find another instrument that no one in this country may know about.  Can you do it?  !st one who brings in the name of the instrument and where it’s from (a picture would be nice) will get a prize!

This Week in our Classroom

Good afternoon!

Wanted to touch bases and let you know what will be happening this week. All Reading and Math assessments are completed in my class. We will be starting our Reading groups Monday. For the most part, the class did slide back a bit from where they ended last year (those students who were here last year). If your child is new to Quest, any Reading or Math scores/assessments you may have would help me make sure that I put your child in the right group. It can take several months for the paperwork to get to us from other schools.

This week we will complete our Community Unit and our Community Murals. Please check Facebook for pictures of them working on their Murals 🙂 We will also start learning about Narrative Non-Fiction, predicates, Intonation, and adding with arrays (in math). Just a reminder that Friday is the day we have our weekly Reading and Math quizzes. We should always be finished with reading by 11:00 and the math (starting after lunch) by 12:30.

We have mailed out our letters and are anxiously awaiting to see who gets a letter back. They did pretty good on writing their letters-Caleb showed the most improvement in writing. Great job Caleb!

Don’t forget that our Field trip will be on October 4th. Please remember to pay your $7 to the office. I have 3-4 spaces open for parent chaperones. If you would like to meet us at the pumpkin patch, please let me know after you have paid your $7. Chaperones are taken on a first-come first-served basis.
If your child will have a sack lunch from school, I need to know if they want white or chocolate milk with their uncrushable. I need this info ASAP (no later than this Tuesday)so the school can make their lunches.  Your child may bring a lunch from home but please remember no soda and there is no microwave available to heat their lunch.  Please have their name on their lunch.l

If you have any questions, please let me know.

Week of September 10

Hello!

Here is what we will be doing in class this week.
DIBELS Testing is Monday and Tuesday in the morning!  Please make sure your child is at school on time-  Our class will be testing from 8;30-10:30 on Monday and Tuesday only.

Remember that on Monday we have our 2 minute math fact quiz.  A lot of the class is on 3s and 4s but there are still quite a few on their 1s.  They have to get 40 problems right in 2 minutes to move up.

Reading/Vocab/Phonics/Grammar-We will start working with rhymes.  Our focus in Phonics this week is on short o, e, and u.  In Reading, we will read a story called Maria Celebrates Brazil which goes along with our theme on “families”. This will relate to our genre that we a re introducing-Realistic Fiction. Our reading strategy continues to be “visualizing” the story we are reading. I will introduce characters, settings, and events to the class.

In Grammar we continue working on Commands/Exclamations  (types of sentences), as  well as adding -s and -es to make plural nouns., and figuring out what root words are.

Their ELA quiz will be on Friday.

Math this week is on Understanding Mental Math Strategies (Making Ten).  They will have their Math quiz on Friday.

Social Studies will continue learning about our community.

If you have made it this far, CONGRATULATIONS!!!I just have 2 more things to let you know–I have finally received the majority of the papers from those who would like to help in the classroom or do work from home.  I will be putting out a schedule, hopefully by Friday, of the dates and times that you can come and work.  If you aren’t on the schedule, please feel free to come in and I will put you to work.

PE-please make sure your child is wearing tennis shoes on the days he has PE.  Our class is split into 4 PE classes.  1/2 of our class goes to PE on Monday/Wednesday and the other 1/2 goes on Tuesday/Thursday.  I have several girls who were heard talking that they would wear shoes with heels or they would tell the teacher they were sick so that they don’t have to participate.  I will be checking with the teacher to make sure that they are participating.

Thanks for taking the time to read this 🙂

Writing a “Friendly Letter”

Hello!
Our class has started learning to write a “friendly letter”. We are learning all the parts of the letter and hope to write our rough draft by this Friday. The following week the class will correct their letters, rewrite them, and get ready to mail them out. Here’s where I need your help.
Please send in a stamped envelope with the name and address of the person that your child will be writing to. Please do not put a return address on the envelope because I am going to have the class write the school’s address instead so that the letters are sent back to the school.
There will be 3 contests for the letter writing:
1. Who wrote to someone the furthest away from our school (we will do the research in class to see the distance in miles away from the school) -and_
2. Who gets a written response from their letter back to the school the fastest -and-
3. Who receives more than just a letter back from their friend.
If you have any questions please let me know! Don’t forget to send in the stamped envelope with the name/address of the person they are writing to ASAP

It’s all in the bag!

Hello everyone!  It was great seeing all the new and shiny faces so eager to learn at Back to School Night.  If you could please send your child to school Tuesday with a brown lunch bag with  their name on it I would be so grateful.  This is for a “get to know you game” called It’s All in the Bag.  Here is what you will need to do:

  • Fill this bag with 4 things or objects that tell something about your child. (only 4 things, no more, no less)
  • All their objects have to fit in this bagUnknown
  • Decorate the bag if you wish!  Make sure that their name is on the outside of the bag!
  • Send  the bag back on Tuesday and they will be ready to present their bag to the class.

If you can’t help your child get this done by Tuesday, you can have it sent in on Wednesday or Thursday.

This is is much fun!  I will post some of them on the blog and onClass Dojo so you will be able to see.  If you have any questions, please let me know.
I will video tape their presentations and will post them on the blog as well as on Facebook and Class Dojo.  If you do not want your child’s face on Facebook, Class Dojo, or any other Social Media site, please let me know ASAP!!
