Homework 1/4-1/8

reading only
Welcome back from Winter Break!  There will be only reading homework for this week.  It is not necessary to fill out a Weekly Homework Organizer Form for this week’s homework – simply sign the Book Buddy sign-off sheet each day.

The only other homework, which will be due Friday, January 8th, is the assignment from the library: the “Diversity Quilt” square.  Diversity QuiltA letter from our librarian, Mrs. Anderson, came home with your child about an assignment in library due on January 8th.

  1. Use the colored square that was sent home the last week before Winter Break for the assignment.  Use crayons, markers, pens, or colored pencils to  create an image that represents your family.  This could include any of the following:
  • Something you celebrate together
  • Something you enjoy doing together
  • Something that represents your family
  • Flags from where your family is from
  • Family crest
  • Photographs of places visited
  • Words describing your family heritage
    2.  Be sure to write your name on the back of the square and  turn it in to our class (not to the library) on Friday, January 8th!

***TIMED READING***
This activity should be completed Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.
  1. Visit the following website:http://www.haslett.k12.mi.us/education/components/scrapbook/default.php?sectiondetailid=11283&
  2. Select a “Level 100″ reading passage. For this week, please read passage 101 (Keeping Fit) for MONDAY and TUESDAY, and passage #103 (Take a Hike)for WEDNESDAY and THURSDAY.
  3.  Complete a one-minute timed reading and record your score on the Homework Form. Find your score by subtracting the number of incorrect words read from the total number of words read in one minute (for instance, if you read 98 words, but read 5 of the words incorrectly, your score would be 93).
  4. Re-tell the story with as much detail as possible, and in your own words, to a parent, using the guidelines described below:
Re-tell Guidelines for Nonfictional Passages: tell a parent:
1.) Topic: what the selection is mainly about;
2.) Facts: tell three different facts from the selection;
3.) Details: tell any interesting details found in the passage; and
4.) Key Knowledge: The most important thing learned from the author.Screen Shot 2015-12-23 at 3.19.52 PM

Re-tell Guidelines for Fictional Passages: Use the “Retell Rope” (at right) as a guide.  The “Retell Rope” requires that the student describe the characters, setting, and plot, and which events happened first, next, and last.

  • If you are able to read the entire passage in less than a minute: start again at the top of the passage and read as many more words as you can until the one-minute timing is over.  For scoring, include thetotal words read during the entire minute. For instance, if you read the entire passage (137 words) and then read part of it again (39 words) before the one-minute timing was over, your score would be 176 (if you had no mistakes).
