This week at a glance

This week is week 6 of school.  We have a Unit 1 test on Wonders and a field trip on Thursday.  The Wonders test is on Friday.  So, there will not be any vocabulary or spelling words this week.  It is a week of review.  Have your student practice Unit 1, week 1-week 5 vocabulary using Quizlet.

Here are the spelling patterns we have done over Unit 1
Week 1: Short vowel sounds: flat, bell, grim, odd, build

Week 2: Long a: faint, ache, slate
Week 3: Long e: indeed, breathe, belief, evening
Week 4: Long i: climb, kite, sly
Week 5: Long o: quote, goal, blown

They can also review them on our Homework outlines that we have online.  Next Monday, October 2, we will start Unit 2, week 1 of Wonders.

They do have some FrontRowED work assigned (#38 and #01). THE OTHER TWO ARE FOR THIS WEEK IN THE CLASSROOM.  PLEASE, DON’T DO THESE AT HOME. They are assigned for our substitute to use the next two days while I am not at school.

FrontRowED class code:  3hwgw9

Also, students should read for 20 minutes and work on their book report outline.

Please enter in your homework from last week (Thursday).  I have changed that form, and it will let them input their information now.

Lastly, (in our classroom) we are finishing up some Utah History before we head out on our field trip.  We will be getting on the bus at 8:45 and returning at 1:45ish.  Don’t forget to pack a lunch that doesn’t need to be heated or kept cool.  A peanut butter sandwich works great.  If you put this, a light jacket, and a small water bottle in a light backpack, that works well.

We are busy in our class!  We are also starting some new material in Math and working on a writing assignment.  They will begin Google forms work too, which is a Tech Standard at Quest.  Let me know if I can help your student with anything.  Thanks.

Homework Changes

We are finishing up our fifth week of school!  WOW!  We are getting into a routine, and I am finding that some things are working and some are not.  So, it is time to make some changes.  Here they are:

This is the last week that the kids will be working on their spelling words at home as part of their homework.  We still have spelling words, but the kids will work on them in the classroom.  You are welcome to look at our Wonder’s outline that I have posted to the study guide page.  There you will see what our English Language Arts lessons will be from week to week.

I am also making some changes in their math homework.  I will be adding a few assignments in FrontRowED.

FrontRowED class code:  3hwgw9

They will need to login to their FrontRowED accounts to see what they have assigned each week.  Prodigy will not be part of their homework.  We will be using Prodigy in our classroom.

For example: Next week I have assigned…
FrontRowED 4.NBT4 #38 Compare multi-digit numbers

Lastly, I am not asking them to watch the news weekly.  Instead, I will ask them to watch the news only at times when I post about it in Google Classroom.  They will be able to log into Google Classroom and see what we are discussing that week.  Then, reply after they do research.  If it is about Local or World news, I will have them watch for a few minutes that week.  I plan on focusing more on Scholastic News articles.  Scholastic News is a subscription each child has that comes to our room often.

Readworks, read for 20 minutes, and Quizlet are still the same as before.  I will have all of this posted under our Homework page, so the students have an outline to follow.

FIELD TRIP-Please remember to fill out the field trip permission slip.  We will be drawing (out of a jar) the parents who are going to attend in the morning.  I will send out a post about the field trip and who has been drawn out afterwards.  Unfortunately, we can only take three with our class.  Good Luck!

Thanks so much for working so hard to sell cookie dough! Our school did amazing and shouldn’t need to have any more fundraisers this year! Awesome!!!  PLUS…OUR CLASS SOLD THE MOST OUT OF THE ENTIRE SCHOOL!!!!!  YIPPEE!!!!!  WE EARNED A $100 GIFT CARD TO SPEND IN OUR ROOM AND AN ICE CREAM P-A-R-T-Y!!!!

This is the Place Field Trip

We are taking our first field trip on September 28th to This is the Place. We are sadly limited on the number of parents we can take on the trip. Please indicate on the form if you are interested and I will have a random drawing of interested parents and let you know soon if you are chosen (Please note: NO SIBLINGS are allowed to attend by request of This is the Place). Don’t worry as I am sure we will have other trips this year for you to attend.

We are asking for a $5 donation to help cover the cost of the trip.
Please sign the Google form giving your permission. If the form is signed early enough you have the option of getting your child’s lunch from the school. There will be an Uncrustable, choice of milk, and a few other options to go along with the sandwich.

Homework

We have been in school for about a month, and it is time to get going on some homework.  We practiced homework steps in class today.  So, the kids should know exactly what to do.  Here are some steps for parents if you run into problems.

1- Study Guide

You will find this at the top of our blog under the STUDY GUIDE tab.  Print this out to keep.  We are on Unit #1, week 4.
You will then have their spelling words, vocabulary words and anything else we are working on in Wonders this week.  Wonders is their ELA (English and Language Arts) program.

2- Monday-Thursday spelling words and vocabulary.

Students need to learn how to spell these words during the week.  They will be tested on these Friday morning.  If they don’t earn 80% or higher on this test, they will retake them until they do.  Retesting is part of our new mastery grading policy this year.  You can find more about this by watching the video link below.  You can find out more about our ELA Core under Curriculum at the top of my page.

Mastery Grading Video

SPELLING PRACTICE IDEAS:
Sentences: Write each spelling word in a sentence. Sentences should be 5 words long and have proper punctuation. Then trace over the spelling word with a marker.
Rainbow Write: Write each spelling word with a crayon or marker. Write them again in a different color. Use rainbow colors to write words 5 times.
ABC Order: Write your spelling words in one column, then write the words in alphabetical order in the next column.
Fraction Spelling: Write spelling words. Then write a vowel fraction and a consonant fraction for each word.
For example: knew, vowel fraction: 1/4, consonant fraction: 3/4.

Pyramid: Write words a letter at a time in a pyramid shape.

KNE
KNEW

Spelling homework will not be turned into me.  Students are expected to practice on their own and be ready to be tested on Friday morning.

Here is a video to explain better what to do
SPELLING PRACTICE – HOW TO: DEMO by OUR CLASS

VOCABULARY WORDS:
Each week students are given eight new vocabulary words.  These words and definitions are on their study guide you have printed out.  We will also go over them during the week.  They will not be testing on the spelling of these words, only the definition.  It will be a multiple choice test.

I have added a flashcard link to help them do this.  The program is called Quizlet.  Student will need to create an account to use this program. It is free to use and an easy way to review these words during the week.  Click on this link and join the class.  Students can put in their Quest google account/email (angie.clark@qackids.org) or your email.  Then click on JOIN.  I will accept them when I see the request.  I like to got to the TEST section or MATCH section, then in the bottom left corner I uncheck the written questions.  I prefer multiple choice and true/false.  But they can pick their way of learning them.  It offers different choices to use for studying.  NOTE:  Make sure they know which UNIT we are working on and the WEEK.  You can also download the App to your device and practice these on the go.

3-Read for 20 minutes each night.
Students will be presenting a book report to the class quarterly. Their first one will be presented October 16-18.  Parents and students can find out more about this below.

4-ReadWorks-Monday & Wednesday homework
How to get students to their assignments

1. Have students go to www.readworks.org/student

2. Students should sign in with their Google account.

3. Students enter class code 66W6UQ

After you have submitted your answers, go back and click on RESULTS.  Check which questions you missed.  Reread the story and find out why you missed them.  NOTE: Once you have submitted your answers, you can’t change them.  So, click the questions too. Reviewing what you missed and why is VERY HELPFUL to your success.

5-Math Homework

One math assignment in Prodigy will be given each week.  Prodigy can be finished at any time before Sunday night.  All of the students have their accounts and know how to login and complete the assignment.  Our class name and code is below.

Mrs. Clark 2017-18 – 4th Grade

Class Code: 87D29C

For now all other math will be done in class.  Students will be given an assessment on Friday. If they are not at 80% of higher, they will be sent home with homework, then retested on Monday.

5-Google Classroom Homework
Students will complete an assignment in Google Classroom weekly. This work will may be a journal prompting, a math problem, world and local news updates, etc.  It can be done any time between Monday-Sunday.

6-Lastly, students are encourage to watch World or Local News each week. (20 mins.)  This is helps in class discussions.

Some additional Homework will be added sometimes, but this is the weekly routine.

A LONG WEEKEND to enjoy this weather-

We have wrapped up our third week into this school year.  It is going great!

Homework has not officially started yet.  We have one more week to full learn homework expectations.  I want the kids to be able to come home and complete their homework by themselves.  I want them to know where the websites are to go to and what is to be done when and how.  I want it to be easy for the parents.  Plus, they are older this year and should be able to get it done on their own.

This week I asked the kids to complete a Prodigy assignment by Sunday.  Additionally, they need to read for 20 minutes.  We have almost finished all of their assessments and are getting into Core work now.  They are such a fun group of kids.

Thanks

Blog update problems….

I am still struggling with my blog updates.  Last night I received one at 3:32 AM!!!!  I have clicked a few buttons and hope that this issue has been resolved.  SOOOooooooo, this is a test.

Tomorrow, please remind the kids to bring their home address and a friend or relative’s address.  We are writing a “friendly letter” and are planning on mailing them off this week.

The homework is still, read for 20 min. a night.  Any book works for now.  I just want them reading.

Thanks for your patience.
