Evaluating Websites

For the “Evaluate Resources” part of the Library Skills Blackout assignment, you must evaluate a website to see how reliable the Author, Purpose, and Content are.  To do this, please find a website with information about a potentially-controversial topic*.  Some examples of topics you can look up are things like presidential candidates, the state of public education, immigration laws, animal rights, the death penalty, etc.  You must get your topic approved by me before continuing with the assignment.  Use this assignment as an opportunity to learn about something you’re interested in!

After you have chosen a website, on a separate piece of paper you must write about what you find on at least 10 of the following:

  • URL?
  • Who are they?
  • Knowledgeable?
  • Contact info.?
  • Whose site is it?
  • Lots of ads?
  • What’s the mission?
  • Opinion or fact?
  • Any errors?
  • Enough info.?
  • Is it real?
  • References?
  • Organized?
  • Date?

After you are done answering the questions, you may show it to Mrs. Ingersoll to have her stamp it off.  Then you may silently read.

*I want you to look up information that could be controversial because these topics are more likely to have biased opinions, and you will therefore learn more from this assignment.
