Classes

Our classes are based on the Utah SEEd Standards as well as the Next Generation Science Standards. We’ll be using exploration to discover what we need to know to successfully pass our end of year tests, but more importantly to become lifelong learners of science. Being scientifically literate is an essential part of being human! So how will we do that? Our classroom is student paced, which means that each student will move through the material as fast or slow as makes sense for their own learning. Each standard has a mastery checklist that you will move through in order to learn the material. These checklists have a variety of material within them that the science department has determined is necessary for learning the standard. Once you’ve learned all of the material in the checklists and assessed that you are ready based on the rubric, you will take the content assessment. Reteach is available during mastery minutes and after school tutoring for students who do not pass the content assessment on the first attempt. After passing the content assessment, you will move on to the skills assessment. Students will be taking the content knowledge for each standard and apply it to a specific scientific skill. It is essential that you understand the content in order to practice these skills. Once you finish your skill assessment, you will be given your overall mastery score for that standard. Check the rubric for details. Given the nature of our mastery based school, extra credit will not be provided. Students will be given the opportunity to improve their scores by relearning the material and then retaking assessments. After school tutoring will be offered daily.
