Family Pictures

Heredity

Dear Parents,

In our next science unit, we will be exploring the similarities and differences in characteristics when comparing offspring to parents and siblings to siblings.  This is especially fun for the students if they can bring in pictures of themselves and their families.  If you are able to send in a family photo, or a one page collage of the members of your family in a protective plastic sleeve by Monday, March 13, I will hang them up for the students to observe, but not touch.  Bonus if you have a picture of yourself around your child’s age! :)

If your children are adopted or mix of a blended family, your pictures are most welcome!  My own children are a mix of blended and biological children.  I bring in their pictures to show that even though we don’t share the same genetic traits, we share the same traits that make us humans.  Even biological families often don’t look like each other and it gives us lots of examples to talk about.

Thank You!!

(I will plan on sending the pictures back home at the no later than the end of the following week, but please email me if you need them before then.)

4-  First Grade REMINDER OF OUR MISSION K9 SERVICE PROJECT-MAZZIE VISITS OUR CLASS. Back in December, Quest arranged to have  Mazzie come to our school for an assembly. We fell love with her and, Mission K9, who’s efforts have help save many of these amazing, forgotten “War Heros.”  Well, All money needs to be turned into the office.

Here’s a recap in-case you have forgotten…This year for one of our service learning projects we will be collecting coins to donate to Mission K-9 Rescue.

As a First Grade we HAVE been learning that everyone can serve and help others. Though our children may be young, they too can make an important difference and our small contributions of a coin here and a few coins there will truly add up to something great.

We are also learning about financial literacy principles; for example, we are learning about the principle of saving and we are learning that, to earn money, one must work.  We are encouraging our students to do extra jobs at home for family or friends to earn coins to add to our Mission K-9 Rescue fund.

SUPER COOL TREASURE: FIRST GRADE CLASS BOOK!!!

20170201_17265520170201_172821 We are going to be making a book as a class, which, will be written and illustrated by the kids. It will be professionally put together, and bound by a company called Student Treasures Publishing…The best part is… that it will be available for parents to purchase. There are two great choices for binding. The book is hardback. I think it would make a fantastic gift for Mother’s or Father’s Day, or as a first grade keepsake.
I am posting some pictures from Miss. Smith’s class book, so you get an example of what the finished product is like. Please talk with your student(s) about some possible writing ideas.

Our book will be titled: What If…

The following are the “What If” subjects your student has chosen to write their story about.

There are a couple characters that may need to be revisited this week, however, it will depend on the direction and story line the students are able to come with.

  • We will begin to draft and revise stories this week. Please help  your student think of the following items that pertain to their character:
  • What is their character’s name ?
  • What does the character look like?
  • What things can it do, eat and see?
  • What (adventure) is going happen in their story?
