WE will be 100 Days Smarter on February 1st!!!

Image result for free clip art for 100th day of schoolThe 100th Day of School lands on Wednesday, February 1st and we are excited to celebrate!
Each child is welcome to bring a collection of 100 items that day to school (100 buttons, 100 signatures, 100 pom poms…) It’s fun to see what 100 of something looks like!  Just a couple guidelines:

* Please let your child only bring in a collection that they can carry and manage by themselves (in fact it would be nice if it could fit in their cubbies)
* No food items (per Quest policy)
*Please no items that have been banned (like Pokemon cards)
*Have fun thinking of a creative or unique collection you want to bring :)

Changes to Parent Teacher Conferences

parent teacher conferences clip art

Dear Parent’s,
You should have received an email from Quest Administration, about some changes being made to our current Parent-Teacher-Conferences yearly schedule. In order to comply with the changes, I have modified the PTC Sign-Up Genius dates, and times, to reflect these changes.

PLEASE NOTE, THAT I AM STILL PLANNING ON HAVING PTC TOMORROW AS PREVIOUSLY SCHEDULED.
I am however, asking parents that have already scheduled a conference tomorrow, to refrain from signing up next month, in order to accommodate those who have not had a chance to meet with Mrs. Sharp and I.

***Feel free to click on the link below for the most current dates, and times, available .

Homework Helps for Tens and Ones

free-mathematics-clipart-clip-art-pictures-graphics-image-6

Adding by Tens and Ones is a difficult concept.  Here is what I had the kids do today that seemed to help. We will be reviewing this concept tomorrow.

  • First have the kids rewrite ALL number sentences vertically. MAKE SURE THEY LINE UP  ALL THE NUMBERS IN THE 10’S PLACE “UNDER THE TEN’S PLACE,”  AND THE ONE’S, “UNDER THE ONES PLACE. ” Then have them draw a line down the middle, dividing the tens and ones. I call it a graphic organizer
  • Have them write lines, representing base 10 rods, next to the numbers in the tens place, and circles, next to the numbers in the ones place
  • Count the 10’s and 1’s. 20170124_161423

Tuesday Lesson 2: Count on Tens and Ones
Wednesday Lesson 3: Add Tens and Ones
Thursday Lesson 4: Problem Solving Strategy: Guess, Check and Revise

2-Math Timings: Subtract from 8
  • Practice your fluency timing repeatedly:  Record your best time and score each day. [By the end of first grade, the target goal is to finish all 25 problems in 1 minute and 15 seconds, with 90% accuracy (23 out of 25 problems correct).]  Remember if your student Click here for extra timings: Fluency Timings
Helpful Hint:  Use counters (pennies, buttons, macaroni, etc.) if needed to model subtraction  or draw pictures (e.g. simple circles) and cross off the number being subtracted. Count backwards when subtracting 1, 2, or 3: Start with the bigger number and count backwards (Example: 8 – 3.  Snap your finger and say “8″ and count backwards 3 times: say 8 (snap)…7…6…5).

3- One Minute Reading Fluency: Lesson #8 Please print from this link: Phonics Fluency Stories
This daily one-minute timed fluency reading will help your student become a fluent reader.  It will also count as reading minutes.  Time your student for one minute. Record the number of words they were able to read CORRECTLY in one minute. Again, Please make sure you are ONLY recording the CORRECT  WORDS READ in that minute

*
Want to save paper?  Have your student read the passage online, then simply record their CORRECT words read/minute each day on their spelling homework form.

4- Reading: 20 minutes/day or a total of 100 minutes/week:
RECORD YOUR READING MINUTES ON THE  “BOOK IT”  READING LOG located in your student’s green folder.

***There are several sources for reading: “Reading for all Learners” also known as”Baggy Books,” books from the school library, books from home, as well as the public library. Students may also use our online reading program Raz-Kids
Our class Raz-Kids login is: dvella0 (That’s a zero)

Please READ, READ, READ with your student, but more importantly, have them be the ones doing the reading to you. They will only become better readers whey THEY are the ones doing the reading at this point. If your student really struggles with reading, try this “FUN GAME.” Pick several words that they will read 100% of the time in the book(s) AND passages they are reading. Write them on a sticky note, and have them put a tally mark on the sticky note each time they read that particular read. This will give them another visual reminder of how important those words are.

**Help your student sound out ALL CVC (consonant/vowel/consonant)  words.
**Help them find words within words when they get to a word that “looks long and scary.”
**They NEED/SHOULD BE able to recognize and read words with vowel teams /ee/, /ea/, /oa/, and /ai/ since we have been working on them since November. Ask them what the rule is when they get to a word that has a vowel team in it.  Our chant: When vowel teams go a walking, the first one does the talking.
**They should be getting very familiar with CVCe words too! We call them “Tickle E Words.” Have your student tell you why.

Knowing basic reading strategies and rules will help your student’s reading fluency and comprehension. From now on, o
ur fluency passages will be increasing in difficulty, so if your student doesn’t have a good grasp on these few basic reading concepts, I would recommend spending some time on these for now as well as continuing with the re-tell ropes.

Lock Down Drill Today

We will be participating in our scheduled lockdown drill this morning at 10am.  Please talk with your students about why we practice this drill is to be safe and keep them safe if it were ever to happen. This will help with their anxiety during and preparing for the drill.  Also, please reassure them that this is a drill and drill only.

Here is the note sent to the parents by administration:
We’ll have a lock down drill this morning. As a reminder, these drills are to help prepare students, staff, and administration if there were an intruder inside the school. During this drill, Dr. Dave will get on the intercom and state, “Locks, lights, out of sight.” Students are to quietly move to a corner of the room where they are out of sight and remain silent during the drill (teachers will discuss this process with students). The teachers ensure doors are locked, lights are turned off, and role is taken. They then wait for administration to open their door and announce that the drill is complete. Though Dr. Dave will explain this drill to students on Wednesday, please take some time to reassure students that this is only a drill.
