Canned Food Drive: Now through November 9th
We are lucky to be partnering with Besst Realty to assist in their goal of raising 100,000 cans of food to help local food banks between now and November 9th. Besst Realty is donating $20,000 to the schools that participate in this service project, and, to date, there are 14 schools participating. The $20,000 in donations will be awarded as follows:
1st place : $5,000
2nd: $3,500
3rd: $2,500
4th: $1,500
5th-9th: $1,000 each
10th-14th: $500 each
The grade (K-5 & 6-9) that has the most cans of food donated by Wednesday, Nov. 2 will get a free dress-down the following day. Cans will be counted again on Monday, Nov. 7. The winning grade will get another free dress down day!
If a total of 5,000 cans (between 5-6 cans per student) are collected, students K-5 will enjoy karaoke during their lunchtime for a day! Jr. High students will enjoy watching Mr. and Mrs. Smedley (avid Ute fans) wear BYU attire from head-to-toe for a day! When 10,000 cans are collected (11 cans per student), students will enjoy watching teachers participate in a pie-eating contest! And, finally, when 15,000 cans (16 cans per student) are collected, administration be forced to kiss a big, fat pig on the mouth!
Let’s do it! Please donate to this worthy cause so that you can help our community and help our school! All donations should be taken directly to our classroom.
Thank you!

Homework for October 31st-November 4th
*ALL MATH AND SPELLING HOMEWORK IS DUE FRIDAY November 4th.
**ALL READING MINUTES ARE DUE MONDAY November 7th.
Parents, reading minutes are designed for your student to learn and practice basic reading skills such as fluency, comprehension and voice. By listening to others read, as well as reading books themselves, students have the opportunity to learn these skills. If your student is only listening to books being read to them, their progress will be hindered.
Please have your student read books, in addition to listening to to others, whether it’s to you or another good reader.
***I am planning on sending home “Reading for All Learners Books” aka “Baggie Books” this Friday. I will post more details this week so please watch for more information as the week progresses.
There are 4 components due for this weeks homework:
1. My Math Lessons 5-8
***Last chance to turn in My Math Homework Lessons 1-4 for credit***
2. Math Timings 6′s
3. Reading: 100 Minutes (Due Sunday November 6th but RECORDED Monday November 7th)
4. Spelling
1. My Math Homework for the Week:
Monday Lesson 5: Vertical Subtraction
Tuesday Lesson 6: Problem-Solving Strategy: Draw a Diagram
Wednesday Lesson 7: Compare Groups
Thursday Lesson 8: Subtract 4 and 5
2. Math Timings 6′s
Worksheets: The purpose of homework is for a quick review, some practice, and a chance for parents to see what their child is learning in math. Please complete every other problem (alternate between evens and odds so your child gets practice doing story problems AND ALL “Vocabulary Check”/ “Test Practice” problems each week). If your child wants to do every problem they are certainly free to do so! Please help your child read the directions/example problems and allow them to talk about the problems as they figure out the answers. Please check your child’s answers for accuracy!
“Adding Six Timings. Record your best time/ score each day on a separate piece or paper if you choose not to print them off, and then attach it to your student’s homework. By the end of first grade, the target goal is to finish all 25 problems in 1 minute and 15 seconds, with 90% accuracy (23 out of 25 problems correct).] If your child frustrates easily because it takes too long to complete, have them practice for 2-3 minutes ONLY (you can be the judge). Encourage your child to keep improving on their own score, rather than expecting them to reach the target goal yet. Click here for extra timings: Fluency Timings
Helpful Hint: Here’s how we’re learning to Add Five’s, Six’s, and Seven’s
5 + 0 = 5 When you add zero to any number, the sum is that same number
5 + 1 = 6 Start on 5 and count on 1 more
5 + 2 = 7 Count on 2 more
5 + 3 = 8 Count on 3 more
5 + 4 = 9 If you know 5 + 5 = 10, you know 5 + 4 is one less, so it equals 9
OR if you know 4 + 4 = 8, you know 5 + 4 is one more, so it equals 9 (We call these near doubles facts)
5 + 5 = 10 Make a mental picture & memorize this doubles fact (Picture 5 fingers on each hand for a total of 10 fingers)
6 + 4 = 10 Memorize this fact (Students need to know all the facts that “Make a Ten”)
All the other six and seven facts use the strategy of “counting on”.
I love reading!
3. Reading 20 minutes/5 days or a total of 100 minutes/week:
RECORD YOUR READING ON YOUR “BOOK IT” READING LOG located in your green folder.
WE are going to participate in the Pizza Hut “Book It” Reading Program. I love this program for so many reasons least of all are ALL the “Free Pizzas” that can be earned just by reading their 100 minutes.
***There are SEVERAL SOURCES for reading: Books from HOME LIBRARIES or the PUBLIC LIBRARY and our ON LINE READING program Raz-Kids. Our login is: dvella0 (that’s a zero)
***CHECK OUT THIS SITE FOR BOOK ON LINE READ BY FAMOUS PEOPLE It’s fantastic!!! http://www.storylineonline.net/
Don’t forget about reading comprehension! Understanding what you are reading is just as important as being a fluent reader!!! PLEASE use these Re-Tell Ropes whenever you are reading with your student checking for understanding. THIS HELPS STUDENTS PREPARE FOR OUR LANGUAGE ARTS WORK ON FRONT ROW AND DIBELS TEST COMPREHENSION.
4. Phonics and High Frequency Words
High Frequency Words
Here is the link to print our weekly spelling homework form: New Weekly Spelling Homework **Remember if you choose not to print off and use this form you need to make sure your student is writing each word and the sentence daily on paper, and that all writing is nice and neat as well as organized like the form, and that the papers get turned in on Friday for credit.
Our spelling test will be Friday, November 4th.
NEW WORDS:
one
all
she
friend
when
PHONICS FOCUS WORDS:
dip
gas
his
SENTENCE:
They are all best friends.
The spelling words and sentence are worth 15 points/day this week. The spelling test will be given Friday.
***Your student needs to write the spelling words in the 1st 5 boxes and the 3 Phonics words in the following 3 boxes. There should be plenty of space to write the sentence once on the 2 lines provided at the bottom of each page on the form.
Please take a few minutes to review what your student has written as well as how. I am VERY picky about where the letters go, and how they are formed and that there is a space between words. Your student should NEVER BEGIN ANY LETTER FROM THE BOTTOM!!!! ***NO BOTTOM DWELLERS!!! It’s so important that students form good writing habits now. Bad habits are VERY hard to break!

- What things might you see/find on a map:
- In which state were you born:
- What city do you currently live in: LOL Most said Utah..
- What would we find if we walked north, south, east or west from the school:
- What direction from school do you live:
- What is a Compass Rose:A compass rose, sometimes called a windrose, or Rose of the Winds, is a figure on a compass, map, nautical chart, or monument used to display the orientation of the cardinal directions: North, East, South, and West—and their intermediate points.
