Reading For All Learners

reading-for-all-learnersI was so excited to discover that the Reading for All Learners books (the books we use for our “Book Buddies”) could be purchased as an iPad app!  This could be a great alternative for you if you want the capability of doing reading homework on an iPad!  The prices are reasonable, too: each book set is $9.99, or the entire collection, including all book sets, is $49.99.  If you are looking to have these books available on iPad for your first-grader or for a younger sibling, this is a great option.

Check for Lice

Students in some classrooms at Quest have been hit with lice, and we do NOT want this to spread! Please, please check your child’s head for lice and for nits (lice eggs). We have had one student in our classroom identified as having lice, and that student has not returned back to school.  All of the students were checked the very next day by administration and were lice free as well as our classroom. However, please still check your student as this was over a month ago.

If you do find lice, please know that the process of ridding your hair, clothing, and other articles (bedding, backpacks, etc.) of lice takes several days, as lice eggs usually hatch only after 7-10 days, but may take as long as 14 days! Lice combs do not remove nits, and are only able to separate hair and sometimes remove larger lice. If your child has lice, we do not want to see you back at school any time soon! Please do not bring your child to school again until all lice and eggs are completely removed and/or dead. The office would be happy to check your student for lice if you are concerned or to train you how to check.  We have been advised a healthy rule of thumb is a weekly check.

Here is some information from the Health Department regarding lice (including videos and helpful documents).
http://lancaster.unl.edu/pest/lice/video.shtml  – Removing Head Lice Safely Video (English and Spanish versions) from University of Nebraska

http://www.headlice.org/index.html – Head Lice website from the national Pediculosis Association. Has some FAQ’s, videos and resources about head lice prevention and treatment.

http://www.cdc.gov/parasites/lice/head/index.html – CDC Head Lice website. I haven’t seen any videos on this site, but good information and resources for public or anyone to use.

Homework for October 24th-28th

Home Bear

*ALL MATH AND SPELLING HOMEWORK IS DUE FRIDAY OCTOBER 28TH.
**ALL READING MINUTES ARE DUE MONDAY OCTOBER 31ST.
*** I am going to be rewarding ALL students who have 100% complete Math AND Spelling Homework each month. I call it pay day. The pay for October and November is a Wendy’s Frosty Coupon. for the months October
***WE are now fully participating in the Pizza Hut “Book It” Reading Program. I love this program for so many reasons least of all are ALL the “Free Pizzas” that can be earned just by reading their 100 minutes. I sent home the first PH coupons to excited September recipients this week. Parents, please be honest when recording your students minutes. Students only experience true pride in accomplishing a hard goal when THEY HONESTLY reach their reading goals.

***I will be switching out the October calendars and replacing them with the November Calendars Monday October 31st. I will be awarding the next QUALIFIED students, who have reached the required weekly MINUTES, their Pizza Hut coupons by Friday November 4th.

Our Math and LA lessons constantly build on previous skills learned. When  your student misses, even for 1 day, they are often frustrated and confused when returning to school. They also forget daily school routines and expectations that are critical for success!  PLEASE make every effort to keep your kids prepared and in school the whole day whenever possible.
Please make sure your student has the proper school attire such as sweaters, jackets and or coats. If your student wants to wear a sweater or jacket throughout the day in the classroom, all jackets/sweaters must meet Quest uniform standards. If you are not sure what they are please refer to them on the school web site.

There are 4 components due for this weeks homework:
1. My Math Lessons 1-4
2. Math Timings 5′s
3. Reading: 100 Minutes (Due Sunday October 30th but RECORDED Monday 31st)
4. Spelling

free-mathematics-clipart-clip-art-pictures-graphics-image-6

1. Math Homework for the week:
Monday Lesson 1: Subtraction Stories
Tuesday Lesson 2: Model Subtraction
Wednesday Lesson 3: Subtraction Number Sentences
Thursday Lesson 4: Subtract Zero and All

2. Fluency Timings

  • Worksheets: The purpose of  homework is for a quick review, some practice, and a chance for parents to see what their child is learning in math.  Please complete every other problem (alternate between evens and odds so your child gets practice doing story problems AND ALL “Vocabulary Check”/ “Test Practice” problems each week).  If your child wants to do every problem they are certainly free to do so! :) Please help your child read the directions/example problems and allow them to talk about the problems as they figure out the answers. Please check your child’s answers for accuracy!
  • Adding Five’s Timings.   ONE TIMING/DAY FOR CREDIT!  IF YOUR STUDENT IS USING AND TURNING IN THE SAME PAPER, BECAUSE THEY DIDN’T COMPLETE ALL THE PROBLEMS THE DAY BEFORE, YOU MUST INDICATE WHERE THEY STOP AND START EACH DAY.  Please RECORD your student’s best time/ score each day on a separate piece or paper if you choose not to print them off, and then attach it to your student’s homework. [By the end of first grade, the target goal is to finish all 25 problems in 1 minute and 15 seconds, with 90% accuracy (23 out of 25 problems correct).]  If your child frustrates easily because it takes too long to complete, have them practice for 2-3 minutes ONLY (you can be the judge).  Encourage your child to keep improving on their own score, rather than expecting them to reach the target goal yet.  Click here for extra timings: Fluency Timings

Helpful Hint:  Here’s how we’re learning to Add Four’s and Five’s

4 + 0 = 4  When you add zero to any number, the sum is that same number
4 + 1 = 5  Start on 4 and count on 1 more
4 + 2 = 6  Count on 2 more
4 + 3 = 7  Count on 3 more
4 + 4 = 8  Make a mental picture & memorize this doubles fact (Picture a spider with 4 legs on each side and 8 legs total)
4 + 5 = 9  If you know 4 + 4 = 8, you know 4 + 5 is one more, so it equals 9 (We call this a near doubles fact)
4 + 6 = 10  We memorize this fact (Eventually, we memorize all the facts that “Make a Ten”)

5 + 4 = 9  (Use 4 + 5 = 9 above)  -OR-  If you know 5 + 5 = 10, you know 5 + 4 is one less, so it equals 9 (We call this a near doubles fact)
5 + 5 = 10  Make a mental picture & memorize this doubles fact (Picture 5 fingers on each hand for a total of 10 fingers)

***Your student needs to write the spelling words in the 1st 5 boxes and the 3 Phonics words in the following 3 boxes. There should be plenty of space to write the sentence once on the 2 lines provided at the bottom of each page on the form.

***This past week, I noticed a good number of students still starting/forming their letters from the bottom***
Please take a few minutes to review what your student has written as well as how. I am VERY picky about where the letters go,  and how they are formed and that there is a space between words. Your student should NEVER BEGIN ANY LETTER FROM THE BOTTOM!!!! ***NO BOTTOM DWELLERS!!! It’s so important that students form good writing habits now. Bad habits are VERY hard to break!

Reading Strategies

http://qacblogs.org/ronda.hills/files/2015/08/Eagle-eye.png

This week I will reintroduce the reading strategy, EAGLE EYE.  When reading if you don’t know a word, what can you do?  Look at the pictures for a clue.

When your student reads to you at home,  remind them to practice their EAGLE EYE strategy when they come to a word they do not know, look at the picture for clue.

More strategies to come…
