Moon Watchers
Moon Watchers
Your child will be given a “Moon Journal” to keep in their blue folders for about a month, so they will be able to observe the moon either during recess or at home and draw an accurate picture of the shape of the moon they saw that day. We will continue for about a month or so to give the kids a chance to see the moon as it goes through all of its phases (full, three quarter, half, crescent, and new) and also because there will undoubtedly be some cloudy days that prevent us from seeing the moon. Thanks for all your help and encouragement! Happy Moon Watching!

Math Homework for October 12th-14th
Monday October 12th Lesson 9:Counting by Fives using Nickles
Tuesday October 13th Lesson 10: Use Models to Compare Numbers
Wednesday October 14th Lesson 11: Use Symbols to Compare Numbers
Do every other problem evens or odds. Math Homework will be collected Wednesday.
Math Homework: **NOTE: Please check your child’s work for ACCURACY. Several homework pages have been turned in lately with incorrect answers (especially story problems because the students see two numbers and automatically think they add the two numbers, but that’s not always the case). Thank You!
This is a great week to catch up on any missing homework. First term grades will be finalized on Thursday, October 22nd. All in class and homework assignments need to be turned in by that date to receive credit. If you aren’t sure if your student is missing assignments…I will be happy to let you know. Homework is such an important part of learning process. I told the kids that it is their responsibility to do their homework make sure it is in their folders (Front RED LABEL) however, they still need your help.
Helping your student complete their homework sets them up for future success. They feel so proud when they have it…and….ON PAY DAY they go home with smiles not tears because they got paid. WE ALL LOVE GETTING PAID FOR WORKING RIGHT?

The Gingerbread Boy, Monsters Under My Bed and What Kind of Pumpkin are You
We finished reading the The Gingerbread Boy from the Talking Library in Starfall this week. The kids loved it!!! WE talked a lot about what and where the setting was, how it changed throughout the book. We wrote in our writing journals and drew a picture of our favorite setting. WE also talked a lot about the sequence of events. WE talked about all the different characters in the book. Ask your student if the Gingerbread Boy was “Spicy?” We learned that a baby deer is called a fawn, that the fox was very clever!
To start off the Autumn season Wednesday, I read the book “What Kind of Pumpkin are You?” We made pumpkins today which will be displayed on our class board in the hall. I have to warn you… some of them are kinda scary…LOL Some of the kids made more than one. I even had a couple make “Graveyards.” WE are so excited for you to see them!!
To go along with our theme…Home of the Wicked Witch and Her Little Monsters…We read the story “There’s a Monster Under My Bed” today (Thursday). The students got a big kick out of it so ask them to tell you about it. WE also made monsters Wednesday which will be used to decorate our door. Monday we will read (I hope) “My monster is Missing.” This is one of my previous classes all time favorites.
All of these aspects… Seasons, Setting, Authors, Illustrator, Sequencing, Characters and how they relate to us etc….are part of the 1st grade Language Ats Core. Feel free to talk about them when reading with your student…

Tower of Books Challenge
Dear Parents,
Welcome to the Tower of Books Challenge, an independent reading challenge for your child! Here’s how it works:
The goal for your student is to read all of the books from the categories listed on the paper sent home, with the option of “stacking up” to other lists that will be available. Each student will check off one of the boxes each time a book is read. After checking off 5 boxes, it’s time for him/her to add on to… The Tower of Books, which will be displayed outside the library for all to see. When a student is ready to add to the Tower, he/she must complete the following steps:
1. Bring in his/her list, signed by a parent, to the library
2. Get a book template
3. Fill in the information for one of the books read
4. Fold the template & glue it into its 3-D shape
5. Receive a prize (Prizes will only be given when the book has been filled out, folded, & brought back to the library.)
Each class will be competing against the other classes in their grade to see which class will be the “master stackers”. At the end of the year, the classes with the highest stacks will be awarded certificates & a small prize.
Your children will hopefully get a “taste” of some different genres of books they may not have read before, all while having fun keeping track of their reading & watching the stacks grow.
Thank you for your support with this!
