Happy Monday Everyone!

I hope everyone had a fun and snowy weekend. We have been stuck inside because of cold temperatures but it looks like tomorrow the students should get some outside time. Remember to dress accordingly. NO SHORTS!! Also, students may bring snow boots to change into before recess. I do not advise wearing snow boots all day just because once they get wet they are very uncomfortable.

Happy, Happy Thursday!

The first week of December is gone! This week we started a unit study on Christmas traditions around the world. We are  learning about the holiday celebrations, where the country is, the color of their flags, and what the flag means to that country. So far we have studied Holland and Italy. We have learned some pretty interesting facts. Please encourage your children to share what they have learned.

Starting on Monday I will post the students progress toward Multiplication Mastery. I will not post the students name I will be using their ID number in SIS. They know this number because it is on their ID Badge. If you would like to know their number just send me an email and I will send it.

Homework Tonight:

Reading: Free Choice reading. Remember to log your reading minutes.

Word Work: Work on your spelling tic-tac-toe. Spelling test tomorrow.

Math Fluency: Work on your multiplication facts. Try printing and writing 20 facts in one minute.  A great site to print practice drills is Math drills.com.

Math: Complete the online assignment here. When you are done click “check it” and email the results to khutchinson@questac.org

Have a wonderful night. I will see you tomorrow!

Multiplication Madness

We have started a new and exciting activity. All of the third grade students are being challenged to learn the multiplication facts with fluency. We are tracking our results on our banana splits. Each fact we pass off with fluency ( 20 questions in 1 minute at 100%) will be rewarded with a part of the sundae. The deadline is Friday February 14, 2014. Students are required to pass off facts 0-9 for a grade. This is a part of our core curriculum. 10, 11, 12 are not required but I encourage you to learn them. Each part of the Banana Split is one of the multiplication facts that needs to be passed off. You will get that part of the Banana Split ONLY if you pass off that actual fact. Again students are required to pass off facts 0-9 for a grade. They are not required to eat a banana if they do not want a banana. Parents should also know that serving sizes will be kid friendly. 0′s–1′s- Napkin 2′s – Bowl 3′s – Spoon 4′s – Banana 5′s – Scoop of Strawberry Ice Cream 6′s – Scoop of Chocolate Ice Cream 7′s – Sprinkles 8′s – Strawberry topping 9′s – Scoop of Vanilla Ice Cream 10′s – Chocolate Fudge topping 11′s – Whipped Cream 12′s – Cherry on Top!!!

Welcome Back!

I hope everyone had a fantastic Thanksgiving Break! I know that we are officially inside the most WONDERFUL time of the year. We have 3 weeks of school until Christmas break. Expect homework for the next two weeks to be as usual. Math, Reading, and Word Work Nightly. The last week before break we will switch things up as I know the holidays are a busy, busy, busy time of year.

Today we pre-tested our first division unit and will be working on the concept of division until Christmas break. We also took our first multiplication fluency test. For the next two and half months we will be working on mastering multiplication facts. Tonight I will be posting our multiplication challenge, rules, and goals. Students are trying to earn a Valentines Multiplication Banana Split.

The third graders are very excited about the Multiplication Challenge but  it is going to take some at home work to master and memorize basic multiplication facts. I will be posting links, multiplication cards, and apps that I think can help your student. Please include a daily practice of multiplication facts into your schedule. You would be amazed at how well students do with just a little daily practice.

Thanks For All you Do!
