Homework

I know that with the break we are a little off our routine with homework.  Some students brought in their homework today, but most did not.  Please have your student remember to bring in their homework packet sometime this week.  They will get a new homework packet on Friday.  It will have a new reading log to track their reading minutes on beginning Friday.  If you already turned the other one in you can print a  blank one off of the blog or just email me their reading minutes.  Anyway that you want to report their reading minutes is fine.  We just want to make sure they get credit for their homework and their reading time.  Thank you for your help with this.  It is wonderful to be back with the students I love so much!

Welcome Back!

I was so excited to see the kids today.  I hope you had a very happy break with your family and friends.  I know that the children are excited about the gifts they received, but we at Quest are requesting that all toys and gifts remain at home. Thank you for your support on this matter.

A message from Mrs. Vella about science rotations

Mrs. Vella has been doing rotations with our class each Monday.  Last week she sent home moon journals with them.  This 3 week project will give your student the opportunity to observe and record the phases of the moon. If there is a day(s) that they can’t see the moon, because it too cloudy, you can look at it via a link on her blog (bottom right side under the Math/Science links). It’s says 2016 but it’s not and when you go to the web page you can key in 2018. It will have a picture of what it looks like now where you are living… It also has a ton of other interesting facts you can discuss with your student. Thank you for helping your students with this fun project that helps them learn so much about the moon!

Together is Better

Lightbulb
Hello Parents,

I hope you are enjoying your Thanksgiving Break. As first grade teachers, you know that our top priority is your students. We want to make sure they are receiving the best education and continuing to gain knowledge and growth through their experience at Quest Academy. Each week, as first grade teachers, we meet and discuss different things we can do, change, or fix in our teaching to help them better grasp concepts. This past week we have discussed a change that we are wanting to try, to see if it will benefit your students to a greater extent. Please know that it has been discussed with administration and all are on board with this decision and we feel it will be very beneficial.

Starting on Monday, November 26, Mrs. Knight and Mrs. Gieseke will be working together to better educate your students in reading and math. Mrs. Knight will be teaching math in the morning to her students and then transition into teaching Mrs. Gieseke’s students math in the afternoon. Mrs. Gieseke will teach language arts to her students in the morning and then will transition in the afternoon and she will teach Mrs. Knight’s class Language Arts. We both feel that our strengths compliment one another and we want to take advantage of that in teaching your students. We feel that this change will bring greater understanding and allow us to go more in depth with what your students are learning. We know this will be a big change for your students, as well as, you as parents, but we are very excited to see how this will work. This change will also allow us to better reach your students individually and personally. It will help to decrease negative behavior in the classroom and allow your students to learn from two teachers who have different teaching styles.

Our plan is to try it out until winter break, then make a decision on whether or not it has impacted your students in a positive way. However, we are very confident that this will change the amount of knowledge your students are gaining. We have fourth grade teachers who have already began this transition and have seen a dramatic difference in their students scores.

We hope that you will be excited about this change. Please contact us if you have any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Knight and Mrs. Gieseke

RAZ Kids are available

We now have Raz-kids available  for all students.  This is an on-line reading program with leveled books for each student to read on their level.  It has rewards and games to help students enjoy the program.

In order to take advantage of the program, go online to www.raz-kids.com   You then have to click on kids log in the first screen, and then a second time in the next screen.

You will then see a screen where you need to put in a teacher name.  My teacher name is lgieseke.  Hit return.  After this you will see a screen where there are shapes and colors 0-26 with the word Rams and numbers.  Your students know which number they are.  If they forget…please email me.  They can then go online and read and explore the leveled books for them.

Please let me know how you like this.  I would love feedback on whether or not you are using this and whether or not this is helpful.

Happy Reading!
-Mrs. Gieseke
